[Full Album] THE LAWRENCE ARMS | "Oh! Calcutta!"

Between tomorrow's YouTube episode for "Quincentuple Your Money" and today's full-album analysis of Oh! Calcutta!, I've certainly ingested a hefty dose of feisty Chicago punk this weekend.

Admittedly, I was a tad indifferent about The Lawrence Arms at first, but it's almost impossible for me to listen to any rock album (especially with undivided attention) without it slowly winning me over in some way or another. You can't deny this band's cathartic delivery—it effortlessly lures you in with a few adrenaline spikes alongside Brendan Kelly's killer bass tone and thoughtful grooves.

These guys combine a few unassuming elements for me into one sound; they remind me of that one random Banner Pilot song I heard on a mixtape awhile back, a little bit of early Sum 41, an overflowing scoop of Rancid, and maybe even a pinch of coarse Pennywise salt. Maybe even two pinches.

I definitely agree. That album is so so good

I feel like when authentic music, especially coming from the oppressed or working class, grows in popularity, it’s inevitable that it will get packaged and commercialized by profiteers looking to profit of the public. This has been wildly obvious with hip-hop. While I don’t know the behind the scenes of the warped tour, I remember when it first came to my town in the 90’s… as watered down punk became mainstream (blink, Green Day, offspring)… so I’m curious how much was the warped tour and how much was the commercialization of the punk sound.

Their album "The Greatest Story Ever Told" is by far their best album. I highly recommend you check that one out for your next Larry Arms record.

If you are a sucker for 3-piece bands, please check out "The Penske File" from Canada. Great live Band as well! All singing major parts (maybe try Kamikaze kids, where Alex, the Drummer, is singing)
