Is that the intent, and what is your feeling, Bryce, about the different accents Luke uses for the different characters. France, in the first book aria was almost like a French person and the second one that accidentally leads to Irish. Just curious to know. :-)

If there is ever a live action movie/TV adaptation in the next couple of years, the actor that I always see when Catcher is talking is Thomas Mann.

Overall I like how the flow of this interaction led well from the end of you last installment and I truly like that Dent showed how the "advantages" Siderov used to try to bully and coerce Catchwick came back to bite him in the butt. Regarding the ending of this chapter, that was honestly as perfect as could be expected, with Catcher's ending question doing what he does best, de-escalating the tension so the other members of his group can take a step back and collect themselves while still poking the bear a bit :) Very enjoyable and cannot wait for the next installment

He knows better than to ask it, he knows it’s tactless and insensitive, even for him, but he’s so head over heels he just blurts it out.

Imagine Students being cheeky with her only to end up literally planted into the floor. Sidorov... damn good job on him. Now he is firmly centered as the next big antagonist Rey needs to overcome... and by the MIND... reading how Dent whipped the floor with him was satisfying. And Sarah... Oh damn. Kinda wished for her jumping her Rei and crying in happyness... but given the hinted shit hands both had been handed by Fate makes sense. Still Aria being the Middlewomen and at least give Sarah hope that they can talk is awesome. Finally... Please the last line from Catcher... its funny too and a perfect Icebreaker.

Whether it’s a less blunt version and more heard under his breath, or comes up a little later, it’s perfect catcher. I think Rei’s response to Sarah is fitting. It doesn’t matter that she didn’t know anything or have anything to do with anything related to his abandonment. He doesn’t KNOW that. He’s naturally distrustful of family after being abandoned. I think the line about them treating him worse will begin the process of getting through to him. But right now, he doesn’t have any reason to truly trust family and is likely resentful, in some way, even subconsciously for her “getting the things he never had” even if in reality that’s still neglect and distance. He’s a teenager and doesn’t have all the information that we do as readers.

She seems like good people, and the kind of person I'd personally want to be friends with. Probably crush on too, but also not want to ruin our (hypothetical) friendship over. I love that she uses a hammer and she reminds me a LOT of Meru from legend of Dragoon.

I would much rather have those quotes exist after they get closer in the book so we can see that relationship build over time.

Hopefully with the rework we can get more from everyone? Honestly, I forgot everyone from Firesong except for Aria and Rei weren't here until you added them all snarling or glaring? I understand why using the "No evidence" card is needed and I was expecting it, I was just hoping we'd see a different outcome. Sidorov getting betrayed by King's Law members this soon could have been pretty interesting - especially with Sarah around and arguably being in the top 5 of Galen's strongest cadets. What exactly is Valera trying to convey here? Sure Rei and Aria couldn't beat Sidorov or hold him off from jumping at Sarah, but it's not like he got his ass handed to him you know? If anything I feel it should have been a group targeted message because this situation clearly shows Rei won't be the only one getting harassed now. She keeps saying it, to only back track sometime later when Rei or the others push themselves too hard. They're moving at a great pace for their year, and even if we don't know their exact ranks. I'm sure all of them are within the top 10-20 of 1st years with all the training they've done. Ignoring all that, yeah it wasn't a bad chapter and hopefully we can get some Sidorov povs in the future. He definitely has me hooked and I gotta know how he can act the way he was in Valera's presence. Lastly, it seems Sarah did infact have Fibro-sissy-ficus-displasion (whatever). Hiroto's words in B2 of thinking everything was fine after Sarah's birth always made me assume she also had Rei's issue but he was present to keep her from getting booted.

She literally thought he was dead and the first actions she takes in his life was to defend one of his best friends.. I do respect his trauma and all, but needing Aria, to speak for him just struck me as kind of weak sauce. He's going to have to do way harder things than have a convo with his estranged sister in the very near future. That is not all a critique of the story or anything. Just my read on the situation. That said, book three, may be well on its way to being the best in the series so far..

Dents words on getting stronger…. also mean emotionally. He needs to pick it up a step in addressing the family trauma. Hopefully Sarah provides a connection point back to his grandfather. Some family training would be awesome.

I really want to know if he is just a sociopath or if he was conditioned before he started school. Or was he another experiment of the MIND. I think Sarah is spot on. Also Catcher comic foreshadowing is great.

It is very much in Catcher's wheelhouse to have an oblivious saying the quiet part out loud moment here which works well to bring in some levity as a form of release after such an intense scene.

2025-07-06 00:17:32 +0000 UTCLove the chapter, great way to keep Kings Law around with Siddorov at the helm although I see what you mean about the slight stretching of believability but I don't feel it is out there really, especially with the beat down Dent gave him, he got off very lightly tbh. The line from Catcher I absolutely adore though! Defo think it should be left in as it fits him trying to lighten the mood, even when he himself is very shaken, and just express himself.

A single devastating hit would be more impactful in his eyes. The gulf of power difference, just food for thought. It can also be said that Dent was letting out some frustrations and Siderov face looked like a great speed bag. Loved the chapter!

It keeps the players in place for antagonism, gives Rei one more reason to climb, and is otherwise just a great representation of the characters. I look forward to Rei and Sarah Forming a friendship that was denied them. I doubt it will ever be a true sibling relationship having met so late, but they have shared parental baggage to bond over atleast.

But Sarah and even Hiroto want to be his family though it’s probably hard to associate his genetic family in any positive way… Though I also hope he gives Sarah a chance soon. Maybe even Hiroto before the intersystems. Probably somewhat what Dent means with In every way. His physical growth has progressed really well but his mental development is still pretty much (and understandably so) the same. Maybe Dent even thinks about Shido gaining sapience and wants him to be prepared. Kestrel certainly seems like a handful at times.

Sort of a "with great power comes great responsibility" sort of thing (Dent would be proud of the reference). I mean come on, he's what? B5 already... as a first year?! And still, it's not enough. Not for the coming battle. Not for keeping Sidirov off his back. And - something tells me - not even for the coming tournament. I do hope Sarah and Rei can have a good heart to heart soon. I know this is super sudden, especially for Rei, but God, I just want him to have ONE family member he can truly rely on (not to discredit any member of his found family.)

Now though he has a grudge and not just a nebulous one like with central messing with rei or a slightly removed one like with those smucks who jumped rei. He has a name a face and a goal. On another note I can't not want more Sarah. Here's hoping Sarah asks aria for catchers number to because its cannon and I really want catcher to be tongue tied and awkward while his friends sneak around and watch him try ans score with a second year ace who can, has, and, will send a mother ffcker flying. After all Sarah is THAT bitch. Aria is gonna know catcher and Sarah are a thing before anyone. Regardless of you keeping that last line were it is, I hope you add it later like when they are all hanging out after this all. The reaction of everyone will be grand.
