This is classic Weeknd. The Trilogy is a banger. 2012 was a rough year for me and this album helped me get through it.

Look I love The Weeknd. But this is exactly why I love your channel. Dad is reacting in such a reasonable way, and it really is fascinating. It might go to show how much of The Weeknd's success may have been brought on by his novelty. Because as Dad points out, the lyrics get really boring and repetitive. Instead, I think those of us that did get hooked on this early Weeknd stuff, it had more to do with the fact that the listener can get into a deep (dark?) headspace, thanks to the slow burn and cinematic nature, as Kai points out. This was great. Will be interested to see Dad react to one of the newer songs (Blinding Lights is an obvious choice). Dad picks up on the Drake connection, which there's a big one. I'm pretty sure the Weekend's early success was a lot thanks to Drake's support, and then heavy features on album "Take Care". My favorites in this sub-genre (and song reccs, since I'm thinking Dad won't want to sit through entire albums, as great as they are): Frank Ocean (Pyramids, Thinking of You, Pink Matter, Nights) and SZA (Supermodel, Love Galore, Drew Barrymore, Good Days).

The Weeknd is an acquired taste. His voice is unique but it can be amazing or grating making your nerves. This song I surprisingly never heard it before. It was nice but it was a little bland. I like his more main stream like call out my name, earned it, can't feel my face, creepin', and pray for me" also his features like Beyoncé' " 6 inch nails and Sia's "elastic heart".
