Kai's Favourite Track of 2023 | Sun Kil Moon "Black Perch"

UPDATED Jun 11 with Lyrics In Video!

Couldn't have been more excited to show my dad this track. If you haven’t listened to this, I beg you to give it a try. Mark Kozelek is one of the greatest songwriters I have ever heard. Enjoy and happy weekend!

Thanks for the rec’s, Tawanda!

Hey Victor. I had no idea they have a new album until this comment! I really enjoyed their debut album so I’d be interested in checking them out again. Thanks for the heads up.

Like Kai, I check in on RYM ratings. Astral Weeks is the top rated. I've not listened much other Van, but this whole album really is special. If you are looking for some single songs to start out Sufjan, some standouts of other albums include: Chicago, Vesuvius, Back to Oz, Mystery of Love.. any/all of them would set you up well for the C&L album.

Appreciate your suggestions! - Kai’s dad

The FrontRoom

Kai tells me he’s heard a bit of Sufjan Steven and liked what he heard a lot, so thanks for that. Astral Weeks by Van Morrison is also a good suggestion. I ‘ve never heard a full album of his and if I’m not mistaken that‘s considered one of his best.

The FrontRoom

This was interesting. I appreciate Kai's varied tastes. If you're not familiar with The Murmurs, you might both like them. I recommend Beautiful Peace, Carry Me Home or Mission, from their self titled album.

Tawanda

Good to see you’re a sun kil moon fan Kai. I was wondering if you’ve been keeping up with the singles for the new Squid album? They’re a post-punk band if you’re not familiar. I highly recommend them.

This was so great. I've circled around Kozelek for a while, and this makes me want to plunge into Benji, off Kai's recommendation. I'm definitely waiting to see some more "Kai Reacts". Would be so cool to see Kai react to the entire Van album "Astral Weeks", it's a complete gem. "Atlantic City" and "Highway Patrolman" are incredible off Bruce's Nebraska. In a very similar spirit to this song. Sufjan Steven's "Carrie & Lowell", is easily in my personal top 5 album of the last decade. It's so personal, perfectly written, and amazingly tender and beautiful. In all of these, the songwriting, and the stories and emotions evoked, are really special. Hope you get to some of them, and if not for reaction videos, just listen to them on your own b/c you really should not wait - they're just that good. :)

Also..."Rivers and Roads" by The Head and the Heart. Which I feel may be more similar and I GAURANTEE you guys will LOVE it.

Great song and, as always, great reaction/review! I'll have to check out more. Thanks! I'm curious to know what you guys think of (Maybe somewhat similar song genre) "Love is All" by The Tallest Man on Earth
