THE CELEBRITY ARTIST REPORT

Comments

Excellent work. You did a great job of covering a wide array of celebrity artist types. I especially enjoyed the way you summed up the issue by bringing attention to the idea that a lot of us lust after money and fame, and that jealousy might be part of what precludes their acceptance into the art world. Had, for example, Jim Carrey studied textbook after textbook and read Artforum and Art in America (as well as any other art magazine over the last few decades), this may have granted him command over a lot of the terminology, but I don't think that this alone would have allowed him access. If he turned his artmaking into a live performance, some credibility would be conferred on the basis that even our greatest artists had more than a streak of performativity to their presence in the studio. Were this added, a few more would want to come along into his camp. But this wouldn't be enough. Let's say that he also wrote and spoke on the creation of art, and in the writing, he showed that his creativity allowed for the kinds of delightful leaping he displays in his comic acting to be highlighted verbally, showing that he not only had an understanding of formal structures, but that he could dance effectively through deviations, intentional and otherwise, so that the attentive listener could see the doors of horror and chaos he opened and shut with every sentence — well even then there might be an issue. It might still be a hobbyist at play. What validates an artist is having something to say, and saying it so well that the conclusions are inescapable. Inescapable not because the "propositions" lead to a natural deductive conclusion, but because they border on the prophetic. I believe that there could be many destitute prophets, but when such a person is able to make use of their capacity for manipulation of metaphor such that others may see their world clearly and what it portends, the ineluctable quality of the value asserts itself, and even then may be denied.
