Rewatching Young Royals Season 1 - Episode 3

Goooooood evening beautiful Patreon family,

Today we are dropping back into rewatching Young Royals in prepation for season 3 and it is safe to say this one left me SHOOK. I have forgotten so much of this show I am SO glad we are rewatching.

Love, always <3

I also forgot a lot of this, what I didn’t forget is my intense dislike of August… I remember what is coming and how much worse he is going to get…

Erin

Father playing the violin… As we read to each other, dark stories of the North…

One moment that really sticks in my mind -and I think it’s in episode 4- is when Wille goes back to school, he hugs the headmistress when she’s showing him to his new room. I can’t remember ever seeing his own mother hugging him or offering him any physical affection up to this point and there he is, holding on to the headmistress because she is a motherly figure in that moment. How telling is that.

Ruth May

As many times as I have watched this series I am always so impressed by the writing. Several people have commented that in the scene with Wille and Erik's conversation about Wille staying for the weekend, Erik never mentions pronouns for Wille's new, "you've met someone." And, by the way, the subtitle translation says, "crush." Actually, Erik says, "Ragg." The meaning of that in Swedish slang is a bit rougher. More like hookup or one night stand. Since I think Wille is thinking about it in more romantic terms, it's no wonder he is a bit insulted.

Dennis Verner

Yes, Ruth. And to amplify your thought, when the Queen says Wille must be careful not to make any mistakes that he will be compared to Erik Wille says, "I already will be. I always have been."

Dennis Verner

Dan, yes, exactly. Remember his conversation with Erik about August's dad's death. "Or someone forgot to tell me as usual." I think he felt disregarded or even dismissed most of his young life. Note the slap by the Queen when he is biting his nail or the nudge to start his apology speech or the push and the word, "Go!" (which isn't subtitled) from the Queen when Wille is to take his place in the funeral procession. I can't believe (what I see as) her disappointment that Wille is to take Erik's place as Crown Prince did much for Wille's mental state.

Dennis Verner

Erin, good point. Don't know.

Dennis Verner

Was he in a public school, or was it just local private school?

Erin

I also get the impression that the Queen originally and ironically assumes that it doesn’t matter much where Wille goes to school because he is never likely to become king, so she looks past him and at Erik as the king in waiting. She more or less says this in the scene at the dining table when she talks about having had plenty of time to prepare for becoming the monarch herself and to prepare Erik. Suddenly, she finds herself in a situation where she has to prepare Wille to take over and even suggests that he starts attending meetings before the family has had time to mourn Erik or come to terms with his death. She strikes me as a woman who’s put the demands of the monarchy before being a good parent. Not saying that’s an easy juggling act, but she is difficult to like as a character because we can very clearly see the lack of proper parenting on Wille, especially as there’s no compensating warmth from his father who seems a rather ineffectual character.

Ruth May

even with it being his choice to go to public school, i feel like the fact that he was even allowed to in the first place is wild for a prince. like you mentioned, he's apparently either not important enough, or they just didn't care that he didn't follow up on the school tradition. just makes me wonder how he was treated in rest of his life before this if these 2 are the examples

Dan

You bring up a point that I've always been curious about with Wille's position as the "spare." It is implied that it was Wille's choice to go to a "normal" school. Imagine the impression it would give a child of a royal family who is so unimportant to that family that it didn't matter if he didn't go to the school that every single other member of his family went to. Just wondering. By the way, Wille's father is not the King. I think his title would be Prince Regent. August addresses him as "Hertig Ludvig" (Duke Louis).

Dennis Verner

i bet queen ( and prince consort) pretty much always came to parents day for Erik, which would make sense why August was so surprised they wouldn't be coming. meanwhile Wille is just used to being the second priority :( the last conversation Wille ever has with his brother is about Simon... i love that detail

Dan

I’m pretty sure I have watched a late reaction to this more recently, because most of those details I did remember and knew they were coming. I’m reminded how complicated and flawed these characters are, whether they are people we don’t like (August, who is so obsessed with appearances that he refuses to make sacrifices that would be for his own good) or people we do like (Simon, who steals drugs from his father and has to endure demeaning treatment based almost solely on his economic status). It’s also emotional, watching the phone conversation between Willhelm and Erik now knowing that it is the last time they will ever talk to each other. Lots of complexity on this show.

Lane Wright

I had forgotten about the Felice and August bit and how this is when the trouble starts with Simon and his friends because of how he acted towards August. I wasn’t ready for the Erik scene, I didn’t realise it was this early on 😢 Still loving it as much and it’s good to refresh the memory as we head towards season 3.

Audrey Gunn

This one is very difficult to watch. So much so that I can’t watch it tonight, it’s too much. Tomorrow morning! Same with episode 3 in season 2. Does this mean that Lisa is going to torture us again in season 3 episode 3? 🤯🫣🙃

Ruth May

Yes I'm so excited to watch this.
