Reacting to the movie adaptation of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Added 2024-01-29 16:24:53 +0000 UTCGooooood afternoon beautiful Patreon family,
Firstly - apologies this video got delayed. I severely underestimated quite how long it was going to take me to film and edit this reaction.
BUT I am VERY happy to be bringing you Aristotle and Dante. I haven't seen any other reaction channel cover this beautiful story yet (which makes me sad) and I am excited to open up this conversation. Even in editing I realised other things I wanted to talk about so I'm excited to see what you all think.
Love, always <3

Great to know! I also read the books after I listened to them. I keep going back to the audiobooks though. I find it very soothing to have Lin's voice in my head. haha I've listened to them probably 5 times all the way through.🫣 And I actually saw the movie in the theater 12 times. ha ha I saw it twice at the Palm Springs Film festival in Jan last year. Then saw it at Outfest in LA, then when it was in theaters I kept getting people to go with me and it ended up staying in one theater in Seattle for 3 weeks so I kept going! hah I know this movie backwards and forwards by now.

2024-02-01 20:50:00 +0000 UTCWelcome to the group Jen 😊 I agree with you, the fact that not only did Lin Manuel narrate the audiobooks but also Jackie recommended them made me read them. I haven’t read one of Jackie’s recommended books and not loved it ❤️

2024-01-30 23:26:37 +0000 UTCWelcome Jen! These are also 2 of my favorite books, and Lin’s narration, makes them even better, I am going to have to listen more closely next watch through, it makes sense though, I was surprised he didn’t have a cameo, but he did, Judy off camera.

2024-01-30 23:19:05 +0000 UTCI'm loving your reactions and the conversation here - I just subscribed to watch this, but I LOVE your youtube channel. Ok 2 points I wanted to make before I finish watching the full reaction 1 - I'm the same age as Ari and Dante and the outfits are spot on. The clothes, hair, makeup, everything is just like it was in high school for me. It really takes me back! Donna Lisa, the costume designer is incredible. There's an excellent interview with her here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgf80cFTQWA 2 - The radio voice is Lin-Manuel Miranda! He narrates the audio books and in the beginning of the first book he does the radio voice, and that's the same voice he uses for all the radio parts in the movie. He's the reason I even found the books. I bought them just because he narrated them. I would've never imagined they'd become my favorite books!

2024-01-30 22:38:23 +0000 UTCAfter watching the film I agree with everything you said. The actors are incredible! But if I hadn‘t read the book the film would be hard to understand, they really left a lot of important things out. I still loved it 😍

2024-01-30 16:06:13 +0000 UTCI did the same as you Jackie, I used a vpn then bought it off YouTube 😊 I was soo looking forward to it but was then quite disappointed with a few things, mainly the length of the film and that a lot of stuff had been cut out. Don’t get me wrong, I still loved it and have watched it a few times now, but, if you have read the book, or listened in my case, then you miss a lot off the inner dialogues Ari was having. Excellent acting by Max and Reese and the cinematography was wonderful and I loved the soundtrack. It just needed to be at least 30 minutes longer, if not more.

2024-01-30 07:22:12 +0000 UTCI think I had some of those shorts. They might still be in a box somewhere LOL. I was born in 1983.

2024-01-30 06:07:26 +0000 UTCI have never had a great relationship with my mom, she didn't raise me and didn't really come around consistently until I was grown up and even then our relationship wasn't great because well, the damage was already done. so I was completely envious of Dante's relationship with his mom because I never had that. My mom died two years ago now and I wish things had been different, but you know, a lot happened and couldn't be undone. It makes you really cherish your found family, you know?

2024-01-29 22:57:19 +0000 UTCIn terms of the kiss, I do think it was to try to make a parallel to his brother’s actions

2024-01-29 22:02:44 +0000 UTCI agree with your thoughts on this. I loved the book and I understand the budget constraints but I was a little disappointed with the length of the film and the things they missed out. If you haven't read the book you won't understand the characters motivations as much. I also don't understand why they changed the kiss scene and made Ari react like that it seems odd.

2024-01-29 21:31:47 +0000 UTCYou know I have been waiting for this one! I honestly don’t know how many times I have watched this movie now, I agree with everything you said, and now the more I watch it and take in little things, like the small looks Ari gives Dante almost from the start, you can kind of see him starting to fall. I feel like I should say for anyone reading this, I am going to mention things from the book, not exactly spoilers, but things that are not in the movie, so keep that in mind as you read my very long-winded response… The book also really has Ari connecting with his father in small ways after the accident, when they would sit in the hospital and eat be reading, just being in each other’s presence, in the parts where Ari has nightmares and his father comforting him. This is something I noticed just during this watch, Elena kind of reminds me of Dante a bit, and I wonder if that is part of why Ari was drawn to her. Also, the letter he is reading in his truck on New Years, is clearly worn, as if he has read it over and over again, and it has been folded and refolded and crumpled, but never discarded. I think perhaps they changed Ari’s reaction to the kiss to try to make a parallel to what his brother did. I kind of also wish they had included that Legs “found” Ari across the street from Dante’s house. I have said before these 2 books are almost like comfort books to me, I can revisit them time and again and never be tired of them, and they never fail to make me cry, both sad and happy tears. I am glad we have this movie as a companion to the books, and I agree they did the best they could given the limited resources they were given. In term of the fashion, from what remembers as a 7 or 8 year old, the fashion seems on point.

2024-01-29 20:09:14 +0000 UTCWhere do I start? I really, really, really like it. I have to be honest though. Through the first half of the film, maybe, I was a bit unsure about how I was feeling while watching it, especially because I think I was trying to follow the film through the book, if that makes any sense. But then by the second half I was gone, sold, completely into it. It kept getting better and better. Max and Reese did an amazing job. Max's portrayal of Ari's feelings and struggles is spot on. I could feel them and then I was sobbing. I am soooo happy we got this adaptation! ❤️

2024-01-29 19:04:03 +0000 UTCI cried so, so much through the movie. It was beautiful, and the actors captured the characters of Ari and Dante so well. I always knew that the film wouldn’t capture the full depth and nuance of the book, and I agree that so much of that was because we didn’t get much of Ari’s internal monologue. The film felt choppy, and if you weren’t already familiar with the book, some of those jumps wouldn’t make as much sense. That being said, I am just so grateful to have finally seen the film, and will appreciate it for what it was, and try not to focus too much on the areas where it felt lacking. I definitely think another re-read of the (audio)book is on the cards for me, as soon as I finish the book I’m currently reading. 🥲😭🫶🏻 Growing up in the 80s…the fashions in the film are totally accurate! 🙈😂
