Reacting to Fellow Travelers - Episode 1

Comments

You definitely should react to The Normal Heart. Keep the tissues at hand 😅

Finally got round to watching this and OMG, it is going to be so hard to watch along with but also can't wait to watch the second episode (don't have time right now) While we're on the subject of Roy Cohn, did you ever see Angels in America?? I went to see it when Andrew Garfield was in it and it blew my mind.

Audrey Gunn

My impression is that out of necessity he’s had to compartmentalize, almost to the point of splitting himself in two. He tries very hard never to be vulnerable, and now he’s met someone who is eroding his walls. In the end, starting with trying to make reparations to the young victim he outed, he understood how colossally screwed everyone was and how they’re all in it together, like it or not. I feel like the impact of the realization became so overwhelming that it forced him to accept his own vulnerability, both in terms of his position and in terms of his emotions. Upon seeking out his lover for emotional comfort (quite uncharacteristically), we see him reconnecting with his humanity and having the impulse to heal his internal division. Once the mask slips and his humanity begins to be revealed, I think his redeeming qualities will be, as well. I don’t see Tim being tethered to Hawk over 4 decades through charisma alone - there has to be some real emotional connection. I predict we will see a better nature in him soon. I do not expect it will always win, but I expect Tim will draw it closer to the surface throughout the rest of their time together.

Thanks for sharing

Absolutely. Constant fear twists you. Sometimes that gets directed inward, and sometimes it gets directed outward, and in the most tragic cases, it goes in both directions. The people who are immune to the corrosive effects of fear are not driven by self-preservation, and so are vulnerable to the pervasive danger in their own way. There’s no clear path through the murk. There’s just no winning.

I think something interesting in the first episode is the outing of the young guy ruining his life to save anther guy’s reputation. I think often oppressed people they often respond inappropriate and cruel ways. It is a manifestation of fear and self hatred. I think the same thing was true in The Boys in the Band and the behavior of Thomas in Downton Abbey.

I was born in 1952, the year Eisenhower was elected president. I don't remember much about McCarthy in the news, and it wasn't talked about much in the family (my mother's maiden name was McCarthy -- might have had something to do with it). I fought internally to accept I was gay and didn't until I graduated from college, but the effort to avoid being outed was exhausting in high school (60's) and college (early 70's). You were very likely to lose friends, family and your job in those days if you were even suspected. Didn't officially come out to family until I brought my boyfriend (now husband) home to meet them in my early 40's. All went well from there, but that was the 1990's.

I have never heard of this show before and this first episode was amazing and so heartbreaking and very sad knowing what must be coming. Thanks Jackie for starting it off.

When I watched this the night it premiered, I was like “I did not have toe sucking on my bingo card!” The sex didn’t bother me, as I was expecting that, but the toes caught me off guard. 😂 not kink shaming by any means, you know, whatever works for them! I was just surprised. Anyway, I love this so far even though it’s heavy. I’m a 40 year old who didn’t come out till I was 21, so I’m a little young to have lived through this, but watching it makes my chest ache. 😭 Also, I think Hawk’s secretary (the one Tim gave the book to) is queer as well. I was getting vibes. Matt Bomer hasn’t aged since White Collar, I feel like. He’s got good genes and juju in his life.

Jamie

I’m impressed by the attention to period detail in this show, which really put you in the time periods of both the early 50s and the mid 80s. I think Matt Bomer is a bigger name in the US than Jonathan Bailey, and yes, you should at least see the film of “The Boys in the Band” that he is in. (I think I’ve seen the film of “The Normal Heart,” but I’ve seen a production of the play, too, so I could be confusing the two). I am not old enough to have been alive during this particular portion of the story, but I certainly have read enough about the time period to be familiar with people like Joseph McCarthy, David Schine, and, of course, the infamous Roy Cohn. And from what I’ve read, this is a very accurate representation of what it was like to be gay in the early 1950s. Oh, and I enjoyed the bit of “Little Shop” you sang at the beginning. 🪴

Sending a hug to you. I hope that it won’t be too much of a trigger for you.

I started watching this when I went to bed but as usual fell asleep and missed most of it so will rewatch again. Just a note about the HH finale you just posted, it says underneath that the comments are disabled 🤔

Audrey Gunn

I'm 80. From 1965 forward I was in the thick of this. But being gay, I knew well what McCarthy and Roy Cohn had done. I knew men like Hawk. I'm already having trouble handling this.

William Gammon

If you are looking for something a bit more fun I loved Matt Bomer in White Collar.

Rosie Dickinson

This was so good 👍

B

The Normal Heart = Yes. The Boys in the Band = Yes. Both excellent selections.

jennifer

🤭🤣 hmmm but was it a mistake? Nope 😂

Diane Furlong

But a fitting mistake!

Erin

The lighting on Hawk’s face in the scene at the steps toward the end is so powerful. Thank You Jackie! This was wonderful!

Tried starting this the other day but wasn't in the right headspace to watch it on my own, though it's definitely a well produced and well written show. Just very heavy. Might manage watching along with you. Also really can't see any redeeming qualities in Hawk.

Rowan Cannell

Oh good, I just got home and will finish watching while having my lunch. I’m about at the halfway point I think. 🦶
