About the Manga
Plot
High School student Haku Yaesaki doesn’t have any goals in life. I mean why try and do anything when there’s always going to be someone better than you? His friends are doing things like playing baseball or studying for med school or trying to make a video game but he’s just tagging along. One day he runs into a classmate of his: Nadeshiko Oga, who in contrast is deadly serious about becoming a pro golfer. Yaesaki makes a comment about how she could make a lot of money off that like Tiger Woods, and Oga makes him hit some balls at the driving range where she works. When he does a shitty job she roasts him for never trying anything or putting work into anything or having anything to offer. Hurt by her comment, Yaesaki starts really practicing his golf swing. Eventually he hits a ball pretty far and Oga realizes he did that with a weaker club, meaning he strong.
Yaesaki soon really starts getting into golf, even getting a job at the driving range like Oga so he can practice more. After winning a driving competition against Chikara, a jealous coworker with a crush on Oga who probably would’ve mattered more if the series kept going, Yaesaki is offered a chance to play at the newcomers welcome tournament where he’ll play actual golf on an actual course for the first time! Just then he meets Oliver Shiramine who came from America to deliver a message from his mother at golf college that Oga can go to golf school in the US and get a bachelor's degree in golf in addition to a masters GET IT???? Yaesaki tries to get Shiramine to teach him putting but Shiramine refuses until Yaesaki is able to help him reconnect with his little brother. Yaesaki decides he’s going to try and get a birdie in his first tournament, and with Oliver’s help he’s able to, briefly overtaking Oga. Refusing to lose to a newbie, Oga has an important flashback about how her mom and then gets an eagle.
Next Oga plays in a legit golf tournament which is like for realsies and invites Yaesaki to be her caddy. She pushes herself to the point where she badly hurts her elbow but ends up coming in 2nd. She’ll be unable to golf for a few months and ugly cries with Yaesaki about how she lost. Yaesaki is feeling down after Oga’s injury and so Oliver invites him to play golf where he reminds Yaesaki of the importance of golfing like yourself and not like someone else. Before leaving for America Oliver gives Yaesaki the key to his storage unit filled with his old clubs. However it’s in the US so he’s gotta get good enough at golf to go there and get them. The last chapter has Oga taking Yaesaki to get his first golf club that’s his and not borrowed from the driving range. He reflects on how it’s okay to fail sometimes and that it’s not about being the best, but improving, much like how this author drastically improved from Beast Children.

Oliver Shiramine
Charming ish type
Guy serious
Doesn’t know much about golf
Why it Failed - Brendo
The art sometimes is a little unpolished
While I appreciate the mc not being so reluctant he does dive into golf really fast
why does the mc skill seem to keep changing is he good or not
Ok when are they going to play actual golf this is 6 chapters at a driving range
I kinda feel I’m missing why the protag cares about golf so much
I have trouble telling Oliver and the mc apart
Ultimately I feel golf just isn't that interesting a sport like maybe it's just me
I feel we don't learn enough about haku I still question his motivation and why he's the way he is
What it Did Well - Jordan
David: And before we get into what we think it did well, if you’ve been enjoying the show we’d really appreciate it if you subscribed to the Shonen Flop Youtube! We’re trying to hit our goal of 1500 YouTube subs and if we hit it we’ll do a special bonus episode on the Build King Epilogue. If you’re already subscribed, thanks so much!
I like that the mc isn't a savant and really is putting the work into it
The golf imagery is really cool like the wall being broken
Characters are actually fun and feel like they have personalities outside of golf
It does a nice job of establishing this is character first vs golf, like blue box
It's funny I'm a bants kinda way not a gag way “want a handicap” “oh yes absolutely”
It has a nice sense of positivity like all the characters want each other to succeed
Does a good job emphasizing the tactic part of golf, it's like a turn based RPGUnlike rxl this actually makes golf look physically taxing
It really makes the characters look like people and repercussions for their actions like the crying scene was great
That was a nice final page
Where it Could Have Gone
Lmao imagine if it was only about the driving range and was insanely character driven
It needed to get into the action sooner
I like the idea of the MC trading social lessons for a sports savant for lessons
Misc Thoughts
Did he have access to a time stop and worked on this until he made something good?
I actually believe the mc is getting tired wow!
When oliver talked about top golf schools I thought he was gana drop a joke like Delaware Community College or something
Oliver is the mcs kamina
Maxy Bee thoughts:
Kento Terasaka’s author avatar has changed! The rugby head is out, for obvious reasons, replaced by a golem in a hoodie. Why? Well, because as a kid he liked the golems in Monster Rancher.
Terasaka plays Street Fighter 6 in his spare time, and achieved master rank with Luke on modern controls. Despite this success, he played Yoshifumi Tozuka (author of Undead Unluck) and lost handily to Tozuka’s Kimberly. They both talked about it in their author comments in Weekly Shonen Jump the week they played together, where Tozuka called Terasaka his first fighting game friend! Sweet!
Terasaka owns over 1700 PC games. That’s too many.
The real life Masters Tournament took place during the run of this manga, in April 2024. I imagine editorial took this into consideration when choosing to serialize this, though may have missed any hype train on volume sales by not releasing volume 1 until May. David: this is similar to the treatment Beast Children had!
Volume extras include:
A greeting, explaining Terasaka’s brief history with golf (started playing at 25, did terribly, wants to share the joy and frustration of golf with you, the reader).
“Golf Explanation Corner”, where Terasaka gives casual advice about costs, etiquette, equipment, play tips and other details on how to get into golf yourself.
“Tell Me, Oga-chan”, wherein a chibi Oga tells you about various aspects and equipment involved with golf. It’s the same as the other corner really, but told as a comic and funnier.
A bonus strip telling you how to go to a driving range.
Sketch versions of pages from chapters in vol.3.
A shirtless drawing of Oliver from a deleted scene.
An afterword thanking readers for their support.
A very short epilogue set 2 months after the end of the series, showing the day Haku got his score under +100.
