Great reaction! I can remember seeing this in the theater when I was like 13 or 14 years old...I can remember most of the audience(myself included) having pretty much the same reaction to the climactic scene as you guys! Some other great Cronenberg films worth checking out are "Shivers"(1975), "Rabid"(1977), "The Brood"(1979) and "Videodrome"(1983)

People were all upset and angry because they thought it was a whole movie showing heads exploding. No one thought there would be an actual story. For another Cronenberg, I hesitantly recommend "Dead Ringers," because it's so truly disturbing, but Jeremy Irons is amazing. By the way, do you plan on doing another live-stream anytime soon? I know you're both busier these days, but it's always nice to have a live chat.
