About the Manga

• Plot
  • The little Russian hamlet of Kasoka has been attacked by werewolves, again, and in response the mayor has reached out to the Hunters Guild, which has sent a little girl in a red hood named Grimm to fight off the wolves
  • Velou is a young village boy raised by the mayor who is tasked with showing Grimm around, when the mayor is suddenly eaten by a werewolf, leaving his wife, a sweet old granny.
  • Velou realizes that the granny is actually the wolf because it’s little red riding hood, and Grimm transforms into a GIGA THICC POWERFUL ADULT WOMAN OH MY GOD and together they kill the granny wolf.
  • Soon after, two werewolf brothers decide to take her place but are defeated when Grimm literally hands Verou Checkhov’s gun which has not silver bullets but WOLFONIUM BULLETS!
  • The alpha wolf Lycaon arrives to the hamlet with his Partner: the ashen witch Cinderella, who burns the entire place into ash get it?

  • Grimm decides to take Velou to the headquarters of the Hunters Guild to get licensed by taking a “Hunters Exam” which is something that has never existed in any other manga before
  • training for the exam takes place aboard the Iron Works, a big train conducted by the extremely muscular Debonair Diamond, a woman who is EVEN GIGA THICCER THAN GRIMM HOLY SHIT. After 3 months of training, Diamond reveals that the hunter’s exam is a game of cops and robbers against her and Grimm. There’s a bunch of other characters who aren’t important other than that they team up with Velou to win. But oh my god it turns out that the mayor from earlier was alive the whole time and working with the bad guys to steal some kind of book

  • By this point Grimm’s character has deteriorated and lost a significant portion of her depth, and Velou’s character completely messes up the plot threads of anybody he interacts with, which are all things stated directly in the series because the 4th wall is about to get broken down. Everything that’s been read so far has been for the enjoyment of the readers, but they aren’t liking it anymore so the world must end. The Mayor, who is actually geppetto, wants to end the series just full stop, but the book containing the fate of the world transforms into Chekhov’s gun, which Velou shoots at the Mayor. Velou doesn’t want the series to end, so it doesn’t really get an ending. It ends with the implication that more stories will be written at some point. What a judo throw.

Why it failed

• Maybe not have grimm standing like a pinup jojo character
• Poor sense of world building
• Really slow start
• I think while the art is great, it might have been too time consuming to really think about plot
• The author kind of overwrites things like he didn’t need the hamlet to literally be destroyed to have proper motivation for MC to leave
• The training arc is kind of pointless, also they introduce a ton of characters and then try and make you care about them and it’s really overwhelming

What it did well

• Art is quite well done though a little rough at times with an overdone amount of crosshatching
  • Really fun splash pages like the bell or bomb scene\
  • Really nice use of graytones, you can tell this art is very difficult to draw

• The initial chapter is fun read
• Some clever problemsolving like the cobwebs in the window in the first chapter
• The eldritch werewolf design is cool
• It’s def a unique setting of being in pseudo russia
• The werewolves are fun, I like how they use critical thinking
• Going super meta about series cancelation is nuts

Where it could have gone

• I really think having a proper “mission” before the exam would have helped a ton, even HxH which has the hunter arc first had an entire arc first about getting to the exam first
• It would have been cool if the MC had left and then found his village destroyed by the two werewolves, ya know the idea you ultimately can’t save everyone but since he’s overleveled by that point he 1 hit kills the werewolves
• Is it possible to make the werewolves sympathetic? Should they be?
• Author needed an artist to 1. Help with ideas and 2. Take off mental workload of the series

Misc Thoughts

• It’s weird how the guild becomes much more heroic over time and I feel a lot of the tone of the guild would have bene ignored later on
• I wonder what kinda joke tools would have been in the hunters kit, imagine the crossover with bone collection and you have a Nintendo Witch
• Kinda weird they had to make a human eating monster sympathetic or make one look extra evil
• Tucker really hated the translation of this series
• Weird they made Wolfonium when there’s Tungsten / Wolframite
