Your reaction to this film was perfection.
Nimona posing as Ambrosia and being “killed” then popping back up-i started questioning it when he was flopping all over after being stabbed. I had to rewind that scene all over. The twists and plot development was incredible. It was almost like Klaus, oldish school art with cgi, the characters are relatable and the score is great.
Nimona reminds me of Maleficent, shapeshifting and being misunderstood. Though with her doing a phoenix move at the end makes me wonder if shes like a fae or a sprite like in mythology.

I meannn in all fairness you DO actually have the time, you just don’t want to. Took me 2 minutes at most. And instead of writing your intial comment of “who’s gonna read that?” You could be more supportive of the people that wanna share their thoughts. Thank you 😁

Nimona is a truly wonderful movie in so many ways <3
It really is a story about acceptance. How bigotry can be taught and passed down through generations, and how it can be misinterpreted by people who want to villainize you. I think a good real world comparison to the scroll about how "nimona destroyed everything", is how some people interpret one single line from the Bible (a mistranslation) and run with it and use it as a way to oppress and attack others.
The movie was obviously very queer in both it's literal sense (featuring a gay man as a main character and showing that very explicitly) but also in it's messaging and allegories. Nimona is pretty clearly an allegory for Trans people, (or Genderfluid/nonbinary people, it depends on how you interpret it!) and the movie does a WONDERFUL job showcasing the hardships of dealing with small-minded people, and the value in finding a found family and gaining acceptance in a community (or even just with one person).
It's funny to me how you were actually disagreeing with Nimona a lot throughout the movie, but by the end it was like an 'ohhh' type of moment where you realize everything she said is true. The system IS corrupt, they DID brainwash Bal (and everyone else, tbf), and the land outside the walls was in fact totally safe. But it's really easy to assume the "monster" is lying, before really getting to know them.
I really like how the story about the wishing well ended up being false, but still had some elements of truth to it. Her watching the birds flying, the fish swimming, and the deer bounding, and we ended up seeing her doing that in the real version, except she was already a shape shifter. Because there was nothing that 'made' her what she is, she's ALWAYS been that way. And glorith wasn't a hero. she was a brainwashed kid like everyone else, who's parents made her believe her friend was a monster for who she was.
I definitely think we need a sequel for this movie, I'd love to see Nimona again (I bet she has a new form now!) and we'd get to see Bal and Ambrosius being dads which will be such a mood. Now that the walls are down I can see that being the perfect take-off point for a plot!
Oh, also, since you asked earlier; Yes, Nimona was basically in production hell for a long time! The movie was originally being made by Bluesky studios, but once Disney bought Bluesky the release date for the movie was delayed. Then it was delayed again. And again. Until finally- Disney cancelled it, along with the entire studio of Bluesky, shutting it down for good. The movie was 75% finished at that point, and many people just thought that we were never going to see it, which would've absolutely sucked. They basically said they weren't going to finish it- SO I guess they turned it over to Netflix, who managed to finally give it to us! It sucks that we couldn't have seen it in theatres back in 2019, (I mean could you imagine how big that would've been?) but at least we got it eventually. People speculate that Disney didn't want to release it because of the queer elements, which I think is a fair argument but proly not the full story tbh.
Also, the movie was based on a comic originally! Written by Nate stevenson, who also directed the animated cartoon She-Ra (a great show hehe). So I pretty much knew as soon as I heard who's work this movie was based on that it'd be good. One of my favs fs, and I'm glad you liked it!

I still need to watch this in full. But from the few clips I’ve seen of it I love its energy.
