Part of why the song has such a strong mental health message is because of the songs name sake, an artist named Jean-Michel Basquiat. He unfortunately died of s heroin overdose at 27 after battling with mental health issues his entire life. The lyrics are also inspired by the message of his art, which was a means of social commentary spanning across many different subjects.
