#MakeThisBattle Feedback

What time is it? It's MTB time. Yes, Peter has been mulling over your match-up dreams and is ready to offer some analysis on the latest round of #makethisbattle. Did he love them? Did he loath him. Let's find out. [oh, and please remember to vote in the corresponding poll]

George Custer vs Woody the Cowboy (submitted by mblpns)

Woody? Look, I’m not going to lash out at you here for suggesting Woody, but what the H is up with people suggesting Woody? You are not alone here. I’ve seen Woody thousands of times, it leaves me wondering… am I missing something? Who on earth wants to see Woody the toy doll from a cartoon rap? How would that look visually? What is so interesting about Woody? I would rather watch Woody Harrelson rap. I think I would rather watch a piece of wood rap. Custer is awesome, he needs to get into a battle, he had pet raccoons, I love his story. Woody, I just don’t get. But, obviously, I will now think about it more.

Horatio Nelson vs Yi Sun-Sin (submitted by Slayen)

Googling Yi Sun-Sin, but I’ve got a feeling he’s the Chinese fleet guy…oh how wrong I was!  The Japenese Turtle Boat guy! Yes! I’ve been talking about him since a trip to South Korea years ago, I saw a model of those boats at a museum and my Korean friend was going on about him. Awesome, he’s gotta get in the mix. Horatio Nelson, I like it.. I like it… I’m just a tiny, tiny bit concerned that the name recognition is a little low, believe it or not. Especially since the name recognition for Yi Sun-Sin will be limited almost exclusively to Korean people and/or strong history folk. I’ll marinate on the match-up. I do love Yi Sun-Sin getting into a battle. But, could he maybe go against another Japanese rival from a different time period? Something to kinda lean into the beef, so to speak.

Mary I of England vs Beetlejuice (submitted by Dragonsblood23)

Hahaha, well, I laughed, in a good way. Fun. Super weird, but fun. Mary I is an interesting character I don’t know too much about, but she’s obviously big and important and there. That said, is she top of the list of British royalty, male or female, that is big and important and there? I don’t think she is. I think she’s like 8th on the list. wink. Beetlejuice is fun in many ways, I will have to ponder a bit more. Oh Jesus, I was googling more and then recalled the whole Bloody Mary thing - “saying her name repeatedly and she appears in a mirror.” That link between the two characters is a little bit …. I can’t find the word…. stretchy? Not tight. Not exactly loose, just flimsy and bland. I feel like I’m being awful harsh in this session, but no.

Simon Cowell vs Alex Trebek (submitted by Dr. Bray)

Awesome. Very creative suggestion. Simon Cowell has been a big figure in suggestion-land for years. He was the other contestant to be pitted up against Gordon Ramsay for the longest time. I’’m happy we went with Julia Child, but I do think that means Simon Cowell’s train has passed. Alex Trebek however, how cool! Tons of fun things possible with him. Also the sad stuff, sadly. I don’t know who else Alex Trebek would be better against so maybe Simon Cowell is perfect. There’s something special about this suggestion either way - to a short list it goes.

Fred & Ginger vs Sid & Nancy (submitted by Tzyt)

Fun, but…very niche, to the point of I don’t think anyone even has this niche. I like what you did here, but I don’t think either pair packs the punch of a Romeo and Juliet or Bonnie and Clyde, and together it’s just 4 x huh?

Karl Marx vs Niccolo Machiavelli (submitted by purplekiren)

I’ve been searching for the appropriate Karl Marx opponent for a long time. I still kinda think it’s Marx brothers or Bernie Sanders… but this is also interesting. Machiavelli is a cool one to throw in the mix, although I think a lot of people think he’s Tupac! I’ll have to do more research to fully understand the potential of the match-up, but this one definitely has me interested, and yeah… Marx has got to get in an ERB at some point.

Peter was also given some match-ups based on the "I'll Be Back" theme - where you were asked to submit some ideas pitting past ERB characters against one another...

Genghis Khan vs Napoleon (submitted by mblpns, Neo, Gabsperger & amageish)

In a word - 'great'. But, in a sentence - could we get away with Lloyd as Genghis Khan at this stage? I don’t know… then again, you’ve got two Lloyd characters in this match-up; so maybe it’s an opportunity to switch it up! It's an interesting one for sure.

Superman vs Joseph Stalin (submitted by FoxDoc & Bantha117)

Ha! This was almost a thing. I remember Rambo or Sylvester Stallone being thrown around as a possible Stalin opponent too. This is cool, but we do have the issue of it being two Lloyd characters again. I do think Joseph Stalin still has plenty of material, but if we’re gonna bring a Russian back, it just always feels like Putin is the man of the hour.

where can I suggest the george bushes vs the John Adamses?

Henry Belman

As far as Woody goes, he is 100% ERB worthy. For starters, the Toy Story franchise is the most critically acclaimed movie series on both Metacritic and Rotten Tomato, meaning it’s the best reviewed movie series ever (not just for animated films but all films). Secondly, Toy Story is the movie that really got computer animation going as it was the first full length computer animated movie. Lastly, the Toy Story franchise is one of the highest grossing franchises ever, Toy Story 3 and 4 both brought in over a billion dollars. So yes Woody is ERB worthy, at least in my opinion. Especially when way more obscure and niche characters have been used like Napoleon Dynamite and Bill & Ted.

Shawn Parker

LeBron James & Stephen Curry vs Lionel Messi & Cristiano Ronaldo - Game changers for their sports, all currently playing the sport still, and they are all within the same age range of early-mid 30s. Also basketball vs soccer/football. Samus Aran vs Rosie the Riveter - Samus is considered the first playable female video game character and Rosie represented the woman that worked in factories and shipyards during the war. Woman empowerment match-up. King Henry VIII vs Taylor Swift - Yup, you guessed it, battle of the people with a bunch of exes. Both of them are extremely well know for their exes.

Shawn Parker

Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie vs Laurel and Hardy

Jorge Figueiredo

Captain Sisko (Deep Space Nine) vs Captain Sheridan (Babylon Five) Perry Mason vs Johnnie Cochran Robin Hood vs Zorro

Shawn Ravenfire

I'm not even sure if the "Bloody Mary" summoned in the mirror is the same "Blood Mary" of England. I kind of got the idea that they were two different people. (Hell, for all I know, I could be in the bathroom mirror summoning the DRINK bloody mary.)

Shawn Ravenfire

Ted Bundy vs Henry VIII Anne Frank vs Bridget Jones

Homokóra

Lol... trump back for a 3rd battle? Putting him on par with hitler & vader? I’d be game if he didn’t thrive off publicity... regardless of what type... but if so, my vote is for pairing him with Zaphod Beeblebrox

Fishbulb

Walter Kronkite vs Dan Rathers Homer Simpson vs Archie Bunker Robin Hood vs Ned Kelly King Henry VIII vs Donald Trump

Kumiko Yamazaki

For the Mary vs Beetlejuice write-up, I think the word you're looking for is tenuous.

Jason Ulloa

I just think Woody has a certain amount of clout, since Toy Story is widely considered the greatest animated movie series of all time, and could be pulled off fairly well just with costumes and without animation needed necessarily. I'm still flattered you picked somthing I came up fully on my own lol
