Thank you for all your new submissions in the #makethisbattle process. Peter has provided feedback on six match-ups below. Just for fun - we have also posted up another poll to get an idea of how you all feel about the six ideas.
[We can't commit that any of these battles will happen in S6, but it's great to have a better way for you to communicate your ideas to us]
Anyhow lets dive into your ideas...
St. Valentine vs St. Patrick (submitted by Clue)
Oh Jeeze, I'm sure noooo one would have any problems if we did one with Catholic saints. That said, these are two pretty interesting characters in history if I'm not mistaken. I've gotta learn more about St Valentine to be sure, but his modern day legacy sure could make for some fun jokes.
Alex Jones vs Walter Cronkite (submitted by Yung Nutt)
I actually like this a lot, it's a good match-up for Jones, who is a living, breathing Vienna sausage. Walter Cronkite adds gravity and gravitas to the match-up, keeps it out of the flash in the pan universe and makes it more classic journalism vs modern journeymanalism. Cool suggestion, will think this one over, lots of fun to be had here.
Hayao Miyazaki vs Tim Burton (submitted by Samwise)
I've definitely seen Mr Miyazaki's name being suggested, often against Walt Disney, but this is interesting too. I don't think Tim Burton has the weight to be in an ERB right now. If it hadn't been for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, maybe.... but there it is. I like some of his movies, and he has a fun look, and millions of great references - now I'm talking myself back into considering it. Okay... maybe....
Saladin Vs Ho Chi Minh (submitted by Josef)
This round is really making me Google. I like it. Ho Chi Minh is awesome, great big character from history who lots of people know and even more people don't know. Googling Saladin....oh right, this dude! I've gone down this Wikipedia pathway before, Saladin is great. These are both great big awesome characters, I'll have to learn a little bit more to understand the nuance of their match-up and beef, but it seems there's a nice "chase out the cocky Western invaders vibe" to both of them.
Hercules vs Beowulf (submitted by Captain Warrior)
Super fun, great mythological heroes with great stories. Hercules feels a bit silly, with a dumb-muscle man in his underwear vibe, but he doesn't necessarily have to be portrayed that way. This match-up is most exciting for me because of Beowulf - lot's of exciting adventure and vowels!
Willy Wonka vs Pablo Escobar (submitted by Bantha117)
Cool suggestion. Wacky, but cool. We've seen Pablo Escobar's name crop up a lot, but always hesitated because we didn't want our first South American character to be a drug dealer. Now that we've done Che Guevara, it opens up a bit, and Escobar is such a large character and big story, it could be very nice. Willy Wonka is a hard no, I'm still livid from the Tim Burton / Johnny Depp portrayal of him, I couldn't subject the world to a third. But if we did...we'd do it the original Wonka.
++++++
We have reopened up the #make-this-battle channel on Discord for you to submit new match-up ideas - or you can post them in the comments below or email them to us. (As always - its a maximum three suggestions each)
This time we'll be looking to select at least 2 match-ups which feature a Monarch or World Leader. Deadline for suggestions is midnight PDT on Tuesday 16th July.
Thanks again!
