'MakeThisBattle' - Feedback from Peter

Thank you for all your submissions to our #MakeThisBattle post here on Patreon and Discord. Exciting to see all the variety of suggestions you came up with. If your ideas weren't selected this time - be assured we will be using them all as an archive to dip back into when we are looking for inspiration!

This week six battles were selected from the first batch of ideas and Peter has provided feedback below. Just for fun - we will also be running a poll to get an idea of how you all feel about the six ideas. We can't commit that any of these battles will happen in S6, but its great to have a better way for you to communicate your ideas to us.

Nicolaus Copernicus Vs Marie Curie (submitted by YodaAmelia and Josef)

Pete:  I have always wanted to get Marie Curie into a battle.  At first glance, Copernicus doesn’t feel like the right match, but that’s mostly because I don’t know too much about him. I’ll do some googling now…. Right, he’s the Sun is at the center guy, I should have known that. I still don’t believe he’s the right match-up for Marie Curie, hard to put my finger on exactly why, but it just doesn’t feel right to me. Marie Curie is a keeper, who else can she go against? [maybe let us know in comments or on Discord]

Richard Nixon vs P.T. Barnum (submitted by Golden_fiver)

Pete:  this is a very exciting idea at first glance. The names conjure strong images, strong feelings, I like the loose association between them.  There’s no obvious link, but at the same time, their link feels obvious. PT Barnum and Richard Nixon have both always been on the radar, I’ll look into this one more, and see what happens.

Jean Valjean vs The Phantom of the Opera (submitted by CrazyJackDonan)

In the last week we have seen some strong interest in a musical theater based battle, and while it was not originally that exciting for me personally, the more I talked and thought about it, the more excited I got.  I think there is real potential in this genre, whether or not it’s these characters, or limited to just two characters, I don’t know… but there’s something here.

Beyonce vs Queen Elizabeth I (submitted by Jimothy)

Awesome. Not sure how to do it, as casting for both could be quite difficult, but its a great suggestion.  I've always had an eye open for Queen Elizabeth I match-ups, and this is one of the most exciting ones I've seen. Again, casting I think is biggest challenge.  Who plays Beyonce?  Lloyd just doesn't have the legs for it anymore.

Malcolm X vs Robespierre (submitted by Slicer)

Interesting one, I think Malcolm X would get a lot of people excited, where as Robespierre would make a lot of people say “Who?” I like any opportunity to learn more about characters from history, and teach people a little something something in a rap battle, so I’ll look more into this one.  I don’t get the connection right away, but I imagine it will become more clear as I learn more about Robespierre.  Right now, I know he was part of the French revolution, and I think he killed a lot of people with a guillotine.  Oh jeez now I have to google him too…. hang on….Yes! Nailed it.

George S. Patton Jr. vs. Ulysses S. Grant (submitted by Last Rookie)

Awesome. That is all. Great suggestion, I hope this happens. Awesome.

++++++++++

We will reopen up the #make-this-battle channel on Discord tomorrow (Jun 27th) and post up a request here on Patreon for your ideas again. We intend to make this a rolling process every two weeks and each time we'll maybe try to vary the types of match-ups we are looking for - just to keep things bubbling along creatively.

Thanks again.

I'm late to this, but thank you so much for considering G.S. Patton vs. U.S. Grant. This was my only suggestion, and I really wanted to give Patton some love. Grant is special in terms of my love for history, but I just REALLY want to see ol' Blood and Guts in a battle. Thanks again. -Last Rookie

Heck, yeah. As for people going "Who?" about Robespierre, that would be mostly Americans by my reconning. I can't imagine a European who has gone to school not knowing who it is. :)

Helena Zeegers

Thank you for answering mine, Copernicus vs Curie, I understand why you want someone else to battle Curie

Austin Mance

Love being able to be a part of something as dope as this. Respect.

Jason Ramsey

Marie Curie vs. Ada Lovelace might be a good match, as the daughter of Lord Byron she should have some lyrical skills

Gabriel Nichols

You could do a whole matchup of musical theater characters (like you did with the Russians and with the movie directors). Throw in characters from Man of the Mancha, Cats, Sweeney Todd, Hamilton, Wicked... (Actually, on second thought, the Wicked Witch is such an iconic character, that maybe she should have her own battle.)

Shawn Ravenfire

I was just thinking the other day that I'd like to see Copernicus in a battle, but I'm not sure Curie would be the right matchup. For one thing, both were originally from Poland, and I find the battles are more fun when the characters are from different places. So yeah, I'd like to see both Copernicus and Curie in battles, but I'm not sure about them being in the same battle.

Shawn Ravenfire

There are plenty of other people that can be put up against curie, depends on which connection you're looking to make. Wilhelm Röntgen (radiation connection), Alfred Nobel (Nobel prize and scientist connection), Niels Bohr (radiation and physics connection) and Louis Pasteur (Chemist connection) jump to mind

Omri Singer

Malcolm X must fight Louis XIV (or Louis IX, aka Saint-Louis, or every king Louis X-something in the history)

-HS-

The obvious choice in opponents for Marie Curie to me would be Lise Meitner. I could also see her go up against Ada Lovelace. Only downside would be: Both would be woman vs. woman. But I'd like people to learn about those two as well, and Meitner would be a 100% fit by topic (radioactivity vs. nuclear fission, and smart women who were mostly denied the recognition).

Thomas 'Kranodor' Hahn

Malcolm X vs Robespierre was my suggestion; the connection is radical revolutionaries that were betrayed/killed by their own followers

Roey Meitav

Thanks Gary. That's really kind of you. We will keep trying to improve things.

Epic Rap Battles Of History

Weird can often be good though right? :)

Epic Rap Battles Of History

I like all of the names individually but the matchups are a bit weird.

Chris Skuller

Although now I'm picturing Mayim *playing* Marie Curie and that seems really cool, too.

BeardedMug

(Also Marie Curie vs Mary Shelly 4 lyfe)

Gary

Really appreciate the feedback! Love what you've been doing with the Patreon, it's great for the community :) Keep it up!

Gary

I... really want to suggest Mayim Byalick here, for the Marie Curie battle. What with the end of Big Bang Theory and everything I think it would be amazing, especially with Mayim's efforts towards STEM and everything, but the two of them battling would be almost sad (in a Jim Henson vs. Stan Lee kinda way)

BeardedMug

What if Marie Curie went up against Dr. Oz?

Adam Byrd

These responses are awesome 🤣
