LGR - Cross Country USA 1995 Review

https://youtu.be/2KP1IthapP0

Edutainment games on LGR? In 2025?! Yep!

It's been a busy couple of weeks here to say the least. Mostly due to enjoyable things happening IRL, but also because making videos is predictably unpredictable! All kinds of things ended up delaying the next LGR video, with two of them I was working on currently unable to be completed. One of them because old hardware is old and ended up not working, and the other simply needs more time to put together. Plus that one ended up getting a sponsor(!) so that's different.

As a result, I ended up deciding to review Crosscountry USA Home Edition from 1995! A delightful little edutainment gem that was recently given to me by an LGR viewer and one that I've been mighty intrigued to try ever since I learned about it.

If you remember seeing Crosscountry Canada on LGR a decade ago, this is very much the same kind of thing just upgraded in most respects. You drive an 18-wheeler across the country, picking up and delivering goods from one place to the other, all while learning geography and planning skills and stuff! And also getting chased by the cops for speeding and getting held at gunpoint by unscrupulous hitchhikers. At least there's no dysentery!

And that is all for this episode! Revisiting the edutainment genre was a blast for me so I hope it's as enjoyable to watch as it was to make. I'll be back with the next video in the coming week-ish, so stay tuned. And thanks so much for your ongoing support!

Agreed, and glad you do too! I still have so many more to get to and I need to address that.

LGR

So awesome seeing another edutainment game covered on here, it's been too long since the genre got the spotlight!

Cyborg Sun

Ah, got you. I'm fully behind having more sponsors if it helps pay the bills. We all know the last year has been challenging for you.

Chris Gardner

Ha!! Wow. It really is the most practically useless map for anything but this one game.

LGR

Love that someone is selling that exact map on eBay for $5 and describes it as if they don't actually know where it is from: "This map of the United States is a must-have for any collector or enthusiast. Created in 1999, this cross-country map is an accurate representation of the geography and transportation infrastructure of the region. The map was manufactured in Canada and is an excellent addition to any collection of maps and atlases. The map features a variety of useful information, including the location of manor highways, and topography of the terrain."

It's a proto-Strandlike!

Edutainment? Must be my lucky day

I never saw this in school. Like you, we only had Oregon Trail... and we didnt even have a computer class to teach us how to use the computer to play the damn thing, lol. Just dumped the kids in a room full of... I think it was Apple II's? with Oregon Trail already running. No instruction, not even any supervision.. Which ended predictably for the computers, sadly.

Beat Kojima to the first strand-type game by decades!

Hope you enjoy it!

LGR

I certainly didn't know they were so popular in US schools, apparently! At least in certain states.

LGR

The unavoidable facts of life.

LGR

Absolutely, edutainment games were a GODSEND as a 90s kid. Wish I had this one back then.

LGR

If you were not alive at the time, you don't realize how entertaining these games were. These are the types of games you would run home from school to play until your parents told you to log off the computer.

Jeremy M. Beaver

I was talking about one of the incomplete videos coming sometime in the future.

LGR

I’m curious who the sponsor is. I didn’t see any in the video.

Chris Gardner

Oh damn. This is bringing back memories!!! I can’t wait to see the video tonight

Matthew Taylor

"Since my 2 planned hardware videos are unable to be completed at the moment" the warcry of every YouTuber I know

Dave Velociraptor

I remember playing Cross Country Canada in school... Never knew there was an American version
