LGR Wrap Up - December 2024

https://youtu.be/yF1Ab42gZfs

The final LGR Wrap Up for 2024 is now up for viewing! Annoyingly not a huge amount to update y'all on but I appreciate that I still have the opportunity to do so. Let's get into the videos from the month as well as your questions!

Feel free to leave any questions for next month's video in the comment section below this post. Thank you deeply for your ongoing support, you continue to be my primary income now since normal LGR YouTube stuff remains unstable with most of my stuff in storage, so again — THANK YOU!

Ooooo Tech Tales.. And why not more Computer Chronicles? I mean, personally I wouldn't mind watching with other like minded people, especially with those who lived through that time like I did. Either way, thanks for being you Clint! Best wishes to you and yours.

Brent K

This month felt like a year! hahaha! However, Its so exciting to hear about your home finally start to get fixed up! What's the most exciting thing you're looking forward to when you finally get to move back home? Setting up the bird stream again from home? The new changes to your home? Just being back in the quiet neighborhood? Your bed? haha!

Brandie Drown

Hey Clint, since doing a lot of your usual deep-dive hardware videos isn't as easy right now, do you see yourself revisiting some of your other series like Tech Tales, LGR Plays, or something else?

Aaron

Hi Clint, I was just watching your video and you mentioned TechTV and CNet. I reached out to Tom Merritt who used to be a host at both places. He mentioned Archive.org I believe you already mentioned you looked on YouTube but he also mentioned Vimeo and Daily Motion. Just thought I'd share. I did enjoy the nostalga of the Computer Chronicles Episode. Thanks for the great content you continue to produce.

Yeah, its surprising what all works, back in 2001 the situation was totally different, thats where i started to use Linux as my main OS and Windows was relegated to gaming only. I remember getting Guild Wars to run on my Linux setup and i was so happy that i didn't need to run it under Windows anymore.

I hope your own house comes back together fast, you will feel better in your own four walls. ❤️ For the question, back in the late 90s when emulators really took off there where so many games that where never released here in Germany that i found about and now love and cherish thanks to emulation, like Chrono Trigger for the Super Nintendo for example, or Crystalis for the NES. What was a game that you now love and cherish that was never released in the US that you found about thanks to emulators?

BastetFurry

Hey, Neil would have a chuckle 🤣

...SIGH

Hey Clint, just recently hopped on your patreon so apologies if you've already discussed this or prefer not to discuss your personal hobbies. I can't remember what video it was but while binging your back catalog I saw you wearing the same Chetney shirt from Critical Roll as I have! Just wondering if you enjoy playing tabletop games and the like? With online tabletops and discord being so prevalent these days I find it to be a fun way to unplug from the stresses of life and have some fun.

Phantom89

Stay strong Clint ,you have a good community of folk wishing you well for the future.

Not a question, but I'm from an area that's had several catastrophic floods, so I get how hard it is to see your hometown devastated. It's like a gut punch every time you leave the house and a general depression you can't shake. From my experience, 3 months is still nothing in terms of cleanup/restoration, it's going to take a year or more for things to start to look more normal. But I can promise you it will get better! It will never go back to the way it was, but more will be salvaged/restored/rebuilt than you expect. Are there opportunities to volunteer with any local cleanup initiatives? You could vent your frustrations with not being able to work on your own house while still helping move things closer to normal. :)

A way to have another view on the stuff that you own is adding a realistic price tag to items (using post-it for example). If you can use money to find out what you cannot easily replace, it may give you back some control. You can add another post-it (another color) to things you don't like and yet another color to things that you love. Categorizing and organizing is a mostly 'mechanical' process that may help in situations like this.

From my own experience, i can tell that you have a bit of a trauma regarding your home and the perceived safety that is no more. You feel like you cannot take care of the situation as you wish you could. In german we call that "Ohnmacht": the feeling of having no control, to be powerless. Don't overthink it and just take some time to get in touch with yourself again. The feeling to rid yourself of the baggage and that everything you care for feels like a weight on your mind is normal after such an event. Letting your feelings rule is a great way to generate more stress. A few years back, i gave away most of my retro computers because the space i was renting for that had a sudden catastrophic leak. I felt that i could not seriously care for the stuff anymore, i felt too incompetent to care for anything. At the moment it felt like the right way to react to those feelings. Now i have begun to buy some of stuff back for excruciating amounts of money, just that i can tinker around with them again. I want to kick my younger self in the back for throwing the stuff out. It all went to good people but i still miss some stuff that i was extremely proud of. The really rare stuff that i never wanted to part with also vanished in that timeframe. The boxes are nowhere to be found anymore. Loosing the things that i did spend 15 years to find hurts a lot more than the feelings of weight and unnecessary baggage i had back then. It just adds to the guilt and feeds the nagging thoughts. Try to sort your feelings and separate them from the imminent tasks. It's hard to do and takes time.

Seriously if you enjoy Diablo 2 I highly recommend it. Been playing Path of Exile 2 in coop and it feels so good.

One of my favourite tech shows from childhood is Dotto’s Data Café. I think it aired on TVO in Ontario, but it was made out in BC. Delightfully corny and hokey. https://youtu.be/Czv9grI8GMo?si=9TbTzrF4r4y_Y3e6

Hope you were able to see the comment I left on the video with my JS Archive account. Got a new question that's hopefully a bit more lighthearted amidst these tough times: Have you ever heard of the free fighting game engine known as "MUGEN"? It's been quite a staple of online goofiness for decades at this point, it's been around since mid '99 and is always occasionally talked about by content creators, even to this very day. It feels really weird at this point in time to really "request" content considering... the state of things, but I really do think talking about MUGEN in an LGR video would be a nice way to "fill in a gap in the schedule" or whatever, since the program is free, lightweight, and relatively easy to get into and demonstrate.

Cyborg Sun

Ahh I still need to try each of those games! My best friend has been begging me to forever, ha

LGR

I've gone Linux exclusively for gaming since I am not that much into major multiplayer titles. But stuff like Path of Exile 2 works perfectly on Linux.

Alyxx the Rat

I used to walk and hike a fair bit but ever since the hurricane, so many of my favorite spots are either gone or inaccessible :/ I do need to find more activities to do, it really helps. Gaming, music, building things, all my goto hobbies have been uprooted and undone after losing my home. It’s wild how much one takes for granted and how fast it can be taken away.

LGR

Ah I was trying to think of that, I ended up cutting a section where I was trying and failing to remember. It’s definitely in the same category in my mind: very respectable work yet not a product for me

LGR

You could call it the Retro Museum of Clint

ctrl.alt.rees

One that’s certainly been passed down through the generations 😁

LGR

BOY HAVE I

LGR

I personally am a big fan of your retro camera videos. Are there any others that are unique or interesting enough that you'd be interested in covering?

Robert Launder

I never heard of this Commander X16 project until you mentioned it. It reminds me of the PICO-8 "Fantasy Console" project. It is essentially a game engine that emulates a fictional game console that only allows for 128x128 16-colour graphics, NES-like audio and games of at most 32 kilobytes in size.

Niels Poldervaart

Have you considered making guest appearances in some other shows, mainly podcasts or something? I don't know if it would be a nice distraction or a burden. Something like Tom Scott's Lateral. Something completely different and apart from scheduling might be easy to take part. That might bring exposure to the channel and I don't know if that's a good thing atm or not either. But just decided to throw that in the air.

J Ruonti

Have you considered opening a museum? *ducks* 🤣

ctrl.alt.rees

There is no rush for content. We will be here and you do kind of have other things to take care of. It is horrible being out of control and receiving constant non-updates from companies. As mentioned above, I enjoy your past videos which have a different flavour and are fun. I love the Sims 3 videos - maybe I just like seeing Sims being tortured :). Stay strong and stay safe.

Brett Garfitt

It must feel terrible to be in this limbo. You really need to occupy your brain. Do something else, pick up some new hobby. Do you work out? It usually helps a lot, especially with accumulated stress.

Dukefazon

Hey Clint.. I've had the flu the last few days. It hit me hard with a strong fever and has had me bed ridden for most of it... So I've been watching endless re runs of you building old computers, deep diving on GPU's from the 90s, the 3do... the NV1... Voodoo.. many many more. It's sure helped me. Just want to make sure you know just how much you're appreciated around these parts despite what's going on in your local radius. Hope your home moves more positively soon. And as a tedious link to Dave's post above... Slàinte mhath! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

"Fuck all" is a great Scottish phrase. I didn't know other people said it!
