Unboxing Moldy LGR Things - Part 1
Added 2024-11-07 21:06:55 +0000 UTCWe're really breaking the mold with this episode! Because the past 6 weeks around here have been utterly ridiculous. Hurricanes, man.
So yeah, this is something completely different while I continue to get back on my feet after the storm! Since I was already going through my damaged retro computer items anyway, I took the opportunity to set up my camera and record the process just in case it might make for a halfway-watchable video or two while I put my life (and house) back together. And so here we are!
This is part 1 of 2, which is focused on the affected retro computers and CRTs. The next half will be the weird mice collection, random bits of odd hardware and vintage goodies, as well as my modern gaming/tech items that were affected upstairs.
I know it's not my normal fare but nothing is normal right now, so I truly appreciate your support through all this. Right now you are GENUINELY my income since I haven't been able to produce regular LGR videos, so thank you so much for your generosity through this bonkers recovery period.
Also, $5+ supporters can expect the October LGR Wrap Up+Q&A episode in the coming week. So keep an eye out for that and take care!

2024-11-09 17:53:36 +0000 UTCTypically I'd use bleach-based mold cleaners, but not here since a good number of the items would be damaged further by bleach. So I went with a non-bleach mold cleaning spray and Windex, along with some 91% IPA here and there

2024-11-09 16:55:29 +0000 UTCNow that´s the spirit, back with video production despite the dire circumstances. Respect for that! I ramped up my Patreon level for more support.

2024-11-09 16:50:21 +0000 UTCI’m glad you chose to share this with us. Great to see you active and I hope it makes things feel somewhat normal again while your home gets fixed up. I can understand the feeling of displacement, this too will pass!

2024-11-08 15:25:31 +0000 UTCOh man, the Amstad 1512. I really wish we hadn't got rid of ours. My dad had one with a hard disk card (he was proud of being the first person amongst his friend group who had a computer with a hard disk) and it was therefore my first experience of PC computing. MS-DOS 5 with WordStar and the GEM GUI. Had so many games - clones of arcade games like Space Invaders, Donkey Kong and Space War, along with my first big box games such as Lemmings and even Hard Drivin' (which managed about 4 frames per second). We also had the printer and my dad would print out banners for our birthdays using the perforated paper reels. They're great little systems.

2024-11-08 13:48:42 +0000 UTCYoutube doesn't care if your house and life get wrecked. But patrons do! Nice video, glad you filmed it.

2024-11-08 10:25:41 +0000 UTCYou've been entertaining and informing us for 15 years - and making all of that stuff available for free for those who can't / won't pay. The least we can do is to stick around while you get back on your feet. All the best!

2024-11-08 10:18:29 +0000 UTCremember to really don't pack the batteries somewhere that could burn down. Worst case, just open the battery case and remove the contents. Than at least you have a nice looking laptop even if the battery is functionless. But yeah, even if they still work, if they are soaked they should be disposed. But you probably already know the thrill, just don't want you to get something burnt down, two trees are enough for this year.

2024-11-08 08:21:57 +0000 UTCJust as fascinating as I'd hoped going through all this, and it's amazing how good most of the stuff looks after a cleaning. Hope it turns on too!

2024-11-08 06:06:28 +0000 UTCI used to work for a company that sold/leased VoIP phones... so many evenings spent scrubbing bases and handsets so they could be sent back out. Not sure if random mold growth is better or worse than someone's accumulated residues.

2024-11-08 02:43:34 +0000 UTCWhat are your go to chemicals for dealing with mold like this?

2024-11-08 00:00:46 +0000 UTCAs I just sit down to watch this all I can say is I'm glad your house isn't a total loss and that you're doing alright. Everything is replaceable except human life. I hope everything is going smoothly in the restoration efforts and that you get your life fully back together soon.

2024-11-07 22:55:43 +0000 UTCThank you! Frustratingly that’s exactly what I did when I first moved into this place, I had cat6 in every room. But the trees ripped right through the runs since they went through the attic and down into each room, so now I get to do it all over again 🙃

2024-11-07 22:54:17 +0000 UTCDefinitely, there are some much needed improvements to make.

2024-11-07 22:51:38 +0000 UTCMy Goodness. I’m glad we are able to support your Clint through this time. You’ll get back to normal soon. Keep that head up! And make sure you run plenty of cat 6 throughout the house now that the walls are down!
