The Voodoo 3 3500 TV
Added 2024-09-10 23:56:11 +0000 UTCGot one here I've been meaning to do ever since posting this unboxing some years back! Taking a look at the Voodoo 3 3500 TV, the top of 3dfx's Voodoo3 line of GPUs back in 1999. It's largely an exploration of its media playback/capture capabilities and the software it came with, but of course ends with a bit of benchmarking against the Voodoo 3 3000 that I normally use on LGR.
A really nice card with one major drawback: THAT DONGLE.
Comments
When the Voodoo 3 was new, I was chugging along on an ATI Rage Pro and would have taken anything faster. I ended up waiting until 2000 and had saved my pennies to buy... a Diamond Stealth III S540 Savage4 card, which was as fast as a Voodoo 3!* Something like this Voodoo 3 3500 was unobtanium to me, since my PC hardware budget was on the order of $100 Canadian every year. Seeing it now is extra special, since we didn't have video reviews and had to rely on the wit of a magazine's hardware editor for our tech-focused entertainment. *At 640x480. With S3TC enabled to help. And the 2D quality was kind of lousy.

Now I'm a little disappointed that I have no idea where the card ended up, because THE DONGLE is still in some box at my storage.

2024-09-12 03:57:58 +0000 UTCI hope you'll leave in the part where the video editor freezes and you move away the tripod "Moving on..." - I don't know if it was deliberate but it turned out funny :D

2024-09-11 14:38:54 +0000 UTCLovely bit of nostalgia, back in the days where the first thing you saw on POST was your graphics card - I remember the excitement of seeing "Geforce MX440" appear for the first time on my Belinea 17" CRT! I also started out with a RIVA TNT2 16MB. Also capture cards - hell yeah, I was obsessed with them. For some reason I never got a Hauppauge card, can't remember why (might be cost) but I got a Pinnacle card when they came out and loved it- Dscaler brought back memories, that was what I used and it was waaay better than the bundled software! I remember recording Futurama episodes onto my HDD, thought it was amazing - I used VirtualDub for editing, loved it!

2024-09-11 13:35:15 +0000 UTCPretty much, yeah. I think we got it second hand when it was little older, so it was a nice curiosity, but was mainly just a "good enough" card for the time for us.

2024-09-11 10:25:30 +0000 UTCJust a thought: You may be able to work around the video capture issue by setting up a RAM drive, seeing as you've got 512 MB of RAM installed on that thing, then whenever you're done capturing you just copy the captured file from the RAM drive to your normal SD card if you care to save it. I mean, not particularly useful for you yourself, Clint, given this was just to test out the card and everything, but if it works it might be useful knowledge for anyone else trying to get this kind of setup working! :B

2024-09-11 03:13:08 +0000 UTCi had one of these, i always remember how awkward and rigid that cable was, i used the tv tuner sometimes but not as much as i thought i would, was a good card for games tho. i can't remember what i did with the card in the end.

2024-09-11 01:32:13 +0000 UTCInteresting! Was it mostly just to have as a gaming card then?

2024-09-11 00:42:29 +0000 UTCDude, we had one of those! Well, probably only got it when it was obsolete, but still... that dongle was definitely something. Never did get much use out of the TV features though.
