LGR Oddware - Novint Falcon

https://youtu.be/jhGeq_yQYyg

Another oddity I've wanted to cover for ages! Finally it's time to talk about the Falcon haptic feedback controller by Novint Technologies. And dang, when this thing is playing a game tailor-made for the device, it one stellar experience. Well, assuming that the tailor-made game is any good at least... and that is not always the case, as we find out here.

But yeah, hope you enjoy the fresh Oddware! Will be back next week with something a bit simpler, not sure what yet since I have a few irons in the fire. I'm also setting up a new computer for editing certain types of videos, so we'll see how that transition goes. Thank you for your support, and have a good one!

Now just imagine you bought this back in the day. You are trying to set it up and are testing and troubleshooting it and making it do that motion at the start. Then your parents walk in on you. Go ahead and try to explain to them how this is a mouse or a controller...

J Ruonti

You mentioned Sidewinder a lot in this video and even had a boxed controller in the closing shot, you gotta do a proper review of the Sidewinder Dual Strike! It was sooo iconic and amazing looking thing back then! I watched the Half Life demo they showed the device with a lot back in 2000-ish. It was probably the first gimmick thingy they made me believe it's worth something and then probably failed to deliver (I had the device in my hand but never played anything with it properly set up).

Dukefazon

Rig it up to your Missile Command cab ;)

Jason Wellband

I've seen some folks build rigs to set these on their back, and even some makeshift joystick attachments for just that! Shame it isn't suitable for that from the factory though.

LGR

Wonder why they didn't make it where you can set it on its back and use it as a joystick ala Marble Madness

Jason Wellband

The first scene in this made me literally say TF???? And I approve of the innuendos but I have the maturity of a 13 y/o

Jason Wellband

Oh wow, virtual power washing with this would be the best

LGR

Ah, goodbye, bowling ball... I know what I'm clipping when this goes live, lmao. This would've been fantastic for a spookier, slower shooter/imsim, or giving the good BRRRRRR feel on Power Wash Simulator. Would really love to see one of those customized kicks for the DOOM 2016 gauss cannon, hoo boy.

Valora Inverse

thank you for saving me hours trying to find that video! XD lmaooo..and yeah i bet he did lmaooo!! omg!! im dead

Brandie Drown

Glad to see that Wheatley made it back to earth

iain

bet the person who made “Stupid Novint Falcon Tricks #1” went down some dark holes, too

LGR

oh god, I'm going to go down a dark hole searching for this now.

Indeed, getting it down to $200 from like $20,000 is insanely impressive. But at the end of the day it was still a lot for a PC controller that only worked with a very specific list of titles. I really wonder what a second iteration might’ve looked like, especially with more backing from developers

LGR

Yeah I really would’ve loved to see a version 2.0 for this. The potential is there for current VR especially.

LGR

There’s an ancient video on YouTube where someone attached exactly that accessory to it, haha

LGR

Ha! I guarantee the industry knew about it. There’s even a video on YouTube from a decade and a half ago where someone attached a… yeah, that, to the end.

LGR

Definite mech controller vibes!

LGR

Thanks 😄

LGR

Gamespot guy’s goofy chuckling cracks me up

LGR

Yeah it’s quite the barrier to entry, but at least they provided tools to let folks program it themselves

LGR

Can just imagine the pitch meeting for all the minigames... "have you considered balls? ooh, and one with balls? and what about balls?"

LGR

Considering the complexity and cost of making hardware, it’s amazing to see the variety of peripherals like this which have been made. Considering the origin of this device, getting the cost down to around $200 was quite impressive. An interesting idea, but likely too niche and not enough 3rd party support.

Chad Armstrong

I know what accessory everyone was thinking about in *that* scene.

Honorary Octopus

Careful with the sexual innuendo, not that Youtube demonetizes the video 😁Just kidding(but sometimes you can´t be sure what they do). An interesting device, but it seems a bit more polishing to adress the weak points would have done good. This rating system remdinds me of the one for the Steam Deck.

Udo Krawallo

and yes. i had tears from laughing too! XD

Brandie Drown

Your laugh makes me so happy! :D And this device looks soooo freakin cool!!! Ah it is too bad it was a missed opportunity! Great device wrong time. The thing I feel meh about the wii, is that there is no feeling.,..but this looks like it would bring so much life to games. Maybe someone in the sex industry will discover it and bring it back lmaooo!!! damn! i want one!!! haha!

Brandie Drown

I remember seeing them at Fry's and was intrigued. Looks like something out of The Matrix or to control an anime mech.

Frederick G.

"This doesn't feel like basketball" rofl. Genuinely the most entertaining review I've seen of this thing. Well done.

Aaron

Please tell me you didn't spend like $50 on that red dot just for a gag.

moosemaimer

This one’s for all the furries out there

Saul

I wanted one of those things so bad back in the day. Never gonna work out when every program has to be tailored for it, though.

moosemaimer

sooo many balls

Alex Chan

"ANYWAY OUR _TOY_ IS WORKING PERFECTLY" had me cackling. Always excited for new oddware! Edit: I also loved the basketball schmup.
