LGR - Sony Floppy Disk Mavica Printer

https://youtu.be/W6yAbcbgUqI

PRINTERS! I'm a sucker for an old printer with nifty features and this one absolutely fits the bill. So here's a laid-back episode all about the lovely little Sony Mavica Printer from 1999.

If you saw the recent CompUSA catalog video then yep, you'll know what instigated this purchase. Although in a roundabout way this has been in the works since 2018! Back then, I purchased a Sony CVP-M3 Color Video Printer that I intended to cover, but after going through all the research and testing and whatnot I didn't feel there was enough to make a good video about. Figured I'd just turn that into a Blerbs episode instead (and I still might) but yeah I just shelved that project.

Then when I saw that Sony made effectively the same device with a built-in 3.5" floppy disk drive, I knew I'd found that extra bit of magic for an episode. And I was able to use the research I'd dug up five years ago and use it here alongside the Mavica stuff! Always nice to be able to repurpose unused work like that, especially since it let me save time and get this done faster.

Ehhhh that was the plan at least, ha. I actually started working on this a week and a half ago and hoped to have it finished this past weekend, but some unexpected family events popped up and that took over a good four days worth of plans. Nothing bad, it was actually quite nice to spend time with loved ones, buuuut y'know. I kinda had editing blue balls the whole time since I was THIS CLOSE to being able to complete the video before those unanticipated plans came up.

Ah well it's done now and I'm already onto the next larger project, which may or may not be completed by the end of the month. We'll see. In the meantime I hope you enjoy some of this thermal floppy disk goodness!

I have a wacky DVD printer that prints in a spiral from the inside out, it was crazy. Only worked on special printable DVDs. Daymaio? I can’t remember who made it as I put it in the closet for good after USB drives became a thing.

There were some prints I didn't show myself printing, but you can see them briefly here and there throughout the video. Especially in the very end outro shot :)

Clint, did you print anything else? after this Video was posted?

Man, I just lost it when the Duke Nukem cherry blossom calendar came out of the printer! That's some high quality promo material right there. I'd love to take my Mavica camera and one of these on trips. The higher operational cost and lower space efficiency, not to mention required AC power and TV/monitor, would be a hard sell to my wife over her iPhone and Bluetooth Polaroid Zip printer, though. But the nostalgic geek in me really loves this setup. Rock on.
