LGR Vlogs - Vintage Computer Festival Midwest '23

https://youtu.be/-0irE49HMVc

Greetings, folks! First off thank you kindly for your patience. It's been unnerving not having anything new being made or going up the past couple weeks, it truly wigs me out! I like my routine and boy has my routine been upended this month due to the Chicago trip, then getting the virus, and most recently spending all my spare time going through the 7+ hours of footage from the trip. Whew.

But yeah, here is the first video from VCF Midwest! And this one is the more experimental of the two – The Vlog. This is an idea I've been toying around with since 2019 or so, back when I covered E3. With that show I ended up with so much extra footage that I never did anything with, and briefly mentioned that I could easily make an LGR travel vlog if I wanted. And welp, here we are!

So effectively this is just a raw timeline of events going through the trip my brother and I took up to Chicago, including my road trip up from North Carolina, a number of fun days bumming around the city proper, a good chunk of the computer festival itself in a far more raw presentation than I've shown before, and then the road trip back followed my time getting over Covid and editing this video. It's a solid two weeks of day-to-day happenings and I truly have no idea if it's entertaining at all, ha. But I can absolutely say that I've never done anything like it so I hope you at least scrub through it a bit and give it a chance!

Of course, the "main" VCFMW video is still in the works and will be coming sometime next week if all goes well, made in the same scripted/narrated style of previous videos I've done about the show in years past. Currently the plan is to have both videos going up at the same time – the vlog on LGR Blerbs and the main video on the, uh... main LGR channel, mainly.

We'll see how it goes though, I'm still going through a whole crapload of footage from the show that my brother filmed and coming up with some kind of words to say about everything. In the best of ways it was an overwhelming event! But overwhelming is still overwhelming, and I'm trying my best to remain simply whelmed and get a fun 20ish minute video made about it.

That's all for this one, please lemme know your thoughts! No clue if I'll do another vlog-style video like this in the future, but I learned a whole lot about the process and there's a bunch that I'd do differently in terms of... well, everything. But hey, for those of you who've asked for exactly this type of video over the years? HAVE FUN.

As someone who lives in New Zealand and has never been to the US, I really enjoyed this road trip. Thanks Clint! Also great to see all the animals in your yard.

Nick Dow

It’s a trip seeing you guys explore my neighborhood and go to my camera place.

scoHish

I know that this probably 100% nearly killed you, certainly getting a virus n all, but I LOVE this content, it reminds me of like early thrifts style stuff... long format, but detailed just a bit of armchair travel. Keep up the good work :)

Dan Milner

LGR continues to be enjoyable and I enjoyed seeing the September 2023 videos from Clint!!! Thx so much for this Patreon too. Cool!

Tom Anderson

No kidding, I do not wanna put myself through THIS again ha

LGR

Just finished watching (in many 10 - 15 minute bursts over quite a few days - breaking up my own editing work with something a little different to watch / listen to) Really enjoyed it - particularly the travelogue type content. Great stuff! Thanks.

Martin Wiggins

Indiana's new state motto per LGR... "Indiana continues, forever, and ever, and ever."

SuperTekBoy

Good stuff! You should consider doing more vlogs. Perhaps shorter format, though 😅

Tossabaddle

Thank you, Don! I appreciate it!

LGR

Amazing Stuff! I really enjoyed this kind of unscripted, casual vlog format. Great effort on filming all the footage, especially cutting too. Handling this much of footage and keeping it relevant can really be a pain. But this was great, really enjoyable and well excuted! All the best to you Clint. - Don J.

Don J

I noticed that you guys got the thin crust pizza. Excellent choice.

Alex Weiss

I used to pass Stinking Creek road all the time. The name never gets old.

Alex Weiss

Was a bit worried when saw the length of the video, but it turned out to be very interesting and delightful.

Vladimir Vyun

That was delightful. Some great twists and turns and a surprise ending.

Travis

It’s honestly a tempting prospect, and I’ll take any excuse to travel. It’d be incredible if I could make it work for videos.

LGR

The power of copious caffeine and painkillers 👍

LGR

Nice man, I’m glad you enjoyed!

LGR

There is but I love the uglier side. It’s so delightfully ugly.

LGR

I think that Best Buy was in Florence.

LGR

Thank you!

LGR

They truly come across as malicious design, heh

LGR

Glad you enjoyed, feel better soon! Back to being sick again myself, these symptoms keep coming and going ugh

LGR

Ha, there I am! My fifteen seconds of fame. Or, fifteen frames of video…

LGR

Doesn't look like your interview made the news, but there is a couple seconds of b-roll of you scanning a qr code https://www.whas11.com/article/money/louisville-expensive-parking-lots-pmc-qr-codes-scan-money-highlands-butchertown/417-11db3722-3050-4f32-ba31-0a7f06985b29

Tom Barber

Great video Clint! This was a perfect way to pass the time laying in bed being sick. I can't imagine how long it took to put this together, but it was awesome seeing your adventures in Chicago and interesting to see your perspective of VCFMW. Despite being overwhelming and a whirlwind, I hope you enjoyed the trip... despite getting sick.

Mac84

Good times, kinda like a super jumbo-sized Thrifts!

Valora Inverse

glad i'm not the only one annoyed by awkward stairs that require you to adjust your natural walking cadence

Eric Sison

This was great -- really enjoyed the entire thing!

13Cubed

Still got an hour to hopefully finish later today, but I'm enjoying the different format! And ouch, that plumbing bill's rough, sorry. =/

Tim J

This isn't a complaint, but jeeze that is long!

Petteri Seppänen

Hey Clint, where did you stop in Kentucky to get your tech? I mentioned in your last monthly wrap up to get some stories as LGR. This definitely qualifies as getting a closer glimpse into the life of LGR. I hope we can hear some great stories, too! Thanks for this Vlog!

Nate Greene

I only skimmed, but I used to work in the brown building. Why'd you film from that side? There's a plaza side :P

JennaKay

I watched it all. I could almost feel my feet hurting just watching all the walking you and Luke did, lol. But man the architecture of those buildings is cool. I must be getting old because I used to not care about that, but it looks gorgeous now. Also I have no idea how you had the stamina to greet all those people for...what, 14 hours? I was getting social anxiety just imagining it. I definitely could not do that, and still be so cool with everyone like you were.

Nathan (PixelPipes)

Thanks for this! It was really nice to see the streets and trains of Chicago! I haven't been there in a long time.

Jason

Still think you'd get great turnouts if you decided to do a speaking and demonstration tour. Just rent a comfy van, then ya can hit a few different cities with colleges. They'd likely pay ya decently, enough to cover your expenses. Plus making vids of each of your stops probably get a lot of traffic on YouTube. I'd say colleges with some decent tech courses like the ones in say Evansville IN, Nashville, Philly, Boston, and maybe around the Dallas area be good.

Dustin Matteson

Super great, loved it; maybe a little more commentary next time? Its a great town and I’ve been there several times, and I was lucky enough to have relatives who lived right in the Printer’s District not too far from Lincoln Park, so I got a real city living experience. I was also there during one of the coldest winters ever, with minus 63 (F) temps when wind chill was factored in; the pipes in the Hilton hotel burst in the bathroom in the lobby and flooded the place, and there were icicles indoors, hanging from the glass atrium ceiling. That kayaker in the “river” (a canal) though… either they have the immune system of the gods or they are going straight to the doctor for a full round of tetanus, antivirals and antibiotics- yeesh!

MichaelM

Thank you! And except for a few brief shots, everything here was shot on my phone – an iPhone 14 Pro

LGR

Loved it. Strange how you can get "glued" to watching something like this 😀 Great work! BTW, me and wife wonders - what main camera and lens are you using for the video photoage in Chicago? Great quality all the way in the range from super wide to zoomed in!

Jim Solblad

Five years difference, I'm the older one

LGR

Love Chicago lighting, it makes every pic look great! Luke is still scanning the film and making galleries, but in the meantime he's posting on his socials: https://www.instagram.com/lukeisafinename https://twitter.com/LukeIsAFineName

LGR

Absolutely, it’s one of our favorite things to do. Just wander with no real goal capturing everything and Chicago is perfect for it.

LGR

Excellent!

LGR

Happy to hear, thank you!

LGR

Currently processing a fresh edit that's a bit more tightly put together so heads-up the URL may be replaced here in a bit. Hope you enjoy whichever version you watch, Jim!

LGR

Heck yeah, nothing quite like seeing that range of peaks and valleys slowly come into view as you go up in elevation.

LGR

Thank you! Yeah I'm glad we finally got to a Cubs games, we'd been wanting to do that for years.

LGR

What a brilliant video! It really chilled me out.

Richard Goodley

I loved the video as a whole and would love to see more vlogs in the future, however, filming (specifically holding a camera/phone) whilst driving is something that is never acceptable to me.

Michael T

Excellent- where can we see your brothers film photos?

Chris Harvey

oh fun the IBM 5170/AT I purchased appears around 1:43:02. The seller (Neal) was great, came and found me later to give me a bonus PCMCIA HDD for some experimentation.

yyzkevin

I am reserving 3 hours today with tasty food and beverage to watch this.

Jim Leonard

A great 2h36min video watched it all. loved the Chicago footage puts a whole new view of the place for me in Australia realising it is such a beautiful interesting place. The Computer festival shows that there are still heaps of us nerds Around. Makes me wonder what a vintage computer festival will be like in 20 years . Makes me think I should have kept everything I brought over the 40 odd years I've been in love with computers

Alek Zapara

Love this long format video production! Thank you Clint!

InSyder

There's a lot here. The Chicago footage looks like a dream, roaming around and taking photos.

Anicast

Seeing you and Luke interact with each other reminds me very much of myself and my brother when we get together. Which of you is the older one (I forget if you ever mentioned that before), and how much of an age difference between the two of you is there? I’m the older brother and there’s a 3 year difference between the two of us.

Stavros Karatsoridis

Crickets and katydids. Sounds like summer.

John Covil

Clint, I love you and love your regular content, but there's something really special about your videos when Luke is there. He adds some 'suave' feeling that really complements your style, and even when he does not say much, there's this unspoken chemistry between the two of you. Your editing really makes it feeel like you enjoyed the trip, I hope it was so. I will consume these 2 hours in very relaxing chunks. Thanks for sharing this! P.S.: How come Chigalo lightning is so awesome?! What gives?! P.S.2: Does your brother share his medium-format footage somewhere?

LJFox

That's a LOT of footage!

The 8-Bit Guy

Thanks, fixed in the next edit!

LGR

Yep, a time or two! A passing couple on the street and a guy in a restaurant, it tends to happen in places with enough population. Almost never get recognized down where I live.

LGR

Well it was obviously a massive undertaking to make this but I enjoyed it! I’d definitely roam Chicago with y’all, looks like it was a lot of good times for sure. Seeing the footage going back up into the mountains made me a bit homesick myself. Cant beat the blue ridge mountains, there really is no place like it. Can’t wait to watch the main video and panels when they get posted!

Zachary Outen

Slight glitch around 1:44, I think, it cuts away from "floppy storage" to footage of the con floor for a few seconds, and then that footage repeats shortly afterwards.

moosemaimer

Nice video. Rendering the "Mystic Peg" Tutorial in Cinema 4D XL 5 in 320x240@15fps (201 frames) took 2h36m on a Powermac 9600/200MP as well, what a coincidence.

stynx

Well, thank you for showing me around Chicago and even taking me to the Cubbies! 🐻⚾️ That was neat. Great footage as well! Good job, guys! And glad to see good old Pentax 645 in the wild. 👍

msuboot

Ooh, Lakeshore East Park (the one with the fountains) looks nice. I'll have to check it out the next time I end up in Chicago.

Ross Nelson

Stopped watching the video around the time you and your brother go out exploring from the hotel cause it reminds me too much of work lol. Admittedly I'm probably just a weirdo outlier, I still like the idea of the video.

Hernando Heilbron

ROTFL. The bird bath and the bears. Haha

Adrian's Digital Basement

Whoa this just have taken so long to edit! I always just snap pics when I'm on trips and call it a day.

Adrian's Digital Basement

Did anyone recognise you during your Chicago outings?

SupaPhly

came by just to mention the Architectural Boat Tour, it's worth it

Tx

We took a few days before the event to check out Chicago as well and ended up hitting a lot of the same landmarks you show in your video such as the Riverwalk and Chicago 360. We also did the Architectural Boat Tour which was pretty great and totally worth doing if you haven't before! I also brought home Covid as a souvenir :/

Retro Bits (Matt)

Indeed, I'm fortunate that with me it was only about six days of notable symptoms. Hope you're back to normal now!

LGR

Good to see you feeling better! My Covid experience fried my brain for weeks, even thou had multiple vax-boosters and stuff. Not keen to have that experience again.
