LGR - Finishing the Oddware Tower

https://youtu.be/D1OEZ42yf_4

IT IS FINISHED.

More or less. There are always tweaks, swaps, and upgrades to consider.

But yeah, the main build is complete with everything working as it should! Lovely to see so many ridiculous things all working together in odd harmony. I really love that Silverstone VFD now that I've used it, and it makes me wanna get a larger display along those lines to stick in a more modern rig.

I think that this is super cool. I would, PERSONALLY, see how modern you could make the underlying computer system. I think 2006 is modern enough for the main board but see what GPU you can cram in there that will make it more enjoyable to use for the games you want to play or demo out at shows. I say, make it fun and knock off any rough bits for usability. I LOVE this thing. It's absolutely fantastic. Well done!!!

CubicleNate

I love the Noctua fans. I have used them on all my PCs in the last 4-5 years now.

SuperTekBoy

This is glorious! I'm excited seeing how this came together.

Wow... so many cables... fun video. Are any of the audio components able to split out the signal so the speakers aren't fed from the chain? Perhaps a guru 3d printer person could design a 4-5" lcd drive bay. Maybe in the style of that crt you covered a couple years ago. Combined with your remote for control it could be a self contained unit, as your planning to bring it to shows, that maybe easier setup. You could even lean into the audio part of it, perhaps by running some low res dos midi player on the lcd. Equipped with canyon.mid and the duke theme of course, and some baller speakers. Since many of the modules are throwbacks to old videos... perhaps the software side could be a throw back to some of your old midi things... Who knows maybe it could even become part of MIDI Mountain

Atari Fuzz

That'd be about the only fitting drive for this! Man I've never even *seen* an internal HD DVD drive.

LGR

Personally, if you added an optical drive, I think it should be an HD DVD drive. Love the build!

Myles MAN

I wish! Nearest one is being built in Charlotte and that’s three hours away

LGR

Hey at least we are getting our microcenter finally so can get filaments and other fun stuff finally in a retail store!

Man what an absolute beast. And yeah, the incompatibility with drivers and stuff in 64bit Vista was probably part of its bad reputation. I have fairly good memories of Vista but it came out during that weird transitional period where stuff just wasn't entirely 64bit compatible yet, but companies really wanted to push 64bit as the next thing (rightfully so even). By the time Windows 7 launched, which was essentially just Vista with some small fixes, 64bit had become the norm and driver support was much easier without having to downgrade to 32bit like you did. Kinda the same problem as Windows Me come to think of it. Like it just came out at a weird time. I'd love to see how the system performs with a proper GPU, that integrated GPU is probably holding it back but then again, this isn't really a gaming computer as you pointed out, more just an insane hardware showpiece. A monstrosity of bay addons with no other purpose than to... well... be what it is. But gaming on it would be amazing in its own right. As far as it being so audio heavy... I mean... that's just the majority of drive bay addons, isn't it? So it kinda just represents that in a way. And the cigarette lighter HAS to be in there for the oddware flavour, even if it looks visually boring. Cause... it's a freakin cigarette lighter in a PC.

Alyxx the Rat

Ooh that’d be fun to install. Happen to have a link?

LGR

A solid idea. Must have all the knobs and displays.

LGR

Nice! Good choice for OS, and hardware. Get a wird GPU in there and it's a winner! Keyboard and mouse could be one of those ergonomic media center types from the 00's. Hopefully another volume knob and and lcd 😅

Tossabaddle

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed! And agreed wholeheartedly, it's too rare that we get any absolute nonsense with computers anymore.

LGR

Yep! With all devices turned on, playing an MP3 through Winamp, fans at full blast, and a cassette playing, it hovers around just 64 watts. Definitely helps not having a GPU or mechanical hard drive. The cigarette lighter is the one thing that pushes it, going up to 160 watts while warming up the lighter.

LGR

"The more jarring and out of place everything looks, the better." He just like me fr

Robert Launder

There is a line in plugin for Winamp you can use to get the graphic eq animation going on the Silverstone when playing tapes

Thomas Gray

I wish computers were still like this today with weird, wacky, interesting addons to drive bays or via internal cards. Modern computers are so...so boring. Not even a single 5 1/4 anymore. Just all rainbow unicorn farts in gloriously boring uniformity. Ah shucks, now I've gone and made myself sad... Good thing I have your videos to bring me out of the doldrums! Thanks for another great video!

Honorary Octopus

So did you plug this monstrosity into a Kill-a-Watt yet? ;)

Kris Asick

I also found that the company Crystalfontz still makes and sells VFDs for use with modern systems, and it uses the same software! Tempted myself.

LGR

It's been bothering me that I'm not seeing your newest videos show up in my feed so I went to set notifications on. I wonder if that might be affecting your algorithm and lower revenues this year?

Mark Bender

FYI, I was trying to get notifications when your vids go live on YouTube, but it says notifications are disabled for your channel because it's made for kids or something like that.

Mark Bender

Awesome to see if finished and running! Looks like a wonderful little tower of madness. The VFD is especially cool to see - definitely tempted to grab something of that sort now... (Also mildly amused that the uptime almost syncs up with the video timestamp at the 24min mark...)

James Cheese

Ahh. Thanks, will fix!

LGR

FWIW: At 24:31, there's a dupe of the line around "it's all awesome, there's way more you can do with this thing" ... unless you're just really emphasizing how awesome it is, of course.

Scott Seligman

Quite possibly! I got it from a business surplus auction and they also had a number of little servers in compact cases.

LGR

Seeing that PC-looking mobo with that bonkers fan makes me wonder if it came from a "SOHO" server that would have been shoved in a closet with little ventilation, maybe an NVR or small-business file server of some sort.

Jason Wellband

And sing. If Techmoan can sing, Clint can sing too!! :P

Jason Wellband

Surprised as well! And with a couple slots to spare around back even.

LGR

Oh wow. What a machine! I'm surprised you were even able to connect all of those 5.25" accessories.

50_SHADES_OF_BEIGE

Nice work Clint! Now you just need to play King's Quest VI... GIRL IN THE TOWEEEER
