LGR - 12 Drive Bays of Towering Oddware

https://youtu.be/kXlZXH4aQ5k

Finally, a long-envisioned LGR project is coming together!

For years I've wanted to get one of these huge cases with a ton of 5.25" drive bays and fill every single one with absurd and odd drive bay devices, creating a sort of Oddware Tower of Power. An Oddware museum? The Antec Tower of Absurdities? Still don't know what to call this thing, heh. Either way it's great to see it happen at last!

Mostly anyways. Unfortunately it isn't quite done yet, there will be a second part to this coming along at some point. I still have to get the computer parts to do... all the uh, computery things.

But at least it looks sweet till then. And I'm really looking forward to taking this out to some computer shows in the future once it's finished, it's a sight to behold in person.

LGR - 12 Drive Bays of Towering Oddware

Comments

Such a magical era in PC accessories. I'm sure we are there but in other ways today replacing drive bays with USB Accessories but none the less, the ridiculousness is something to behold.

CubicleNate

I like that silverstone display; i have one of their PC cases that came with it.

Joseph Boyd

Awesome! As you've reviewed a lot of drive bay things, a video like this had to be made! What would really add to the whole build, if such a thing even exists as a drive-bay, is a MiniDisk player/recorder. You could copy all your tapes to minidisks while woring about the y2k-Bug.

Thomas Vanek

I wanted to ask does your insurance agent watch your videos? That would strange and funny if your rates fluctuated with your content. :D

Daniel Cayea

Yeah I'm starting to lean towards Vista! Not only is it fittingly busy and bloated, but late 2006/early '07 it would be era appropriate too

LGR

aw man.. I was hoping you'd put in the Creative Labs panel instead of the cigarette drawer

Evan B

I'd be going with the most ridiculous options (within reason) personally - Vista with heavy usage of the desktop gadgets to reflect the overly busy setup, if it's viable. I do really want to mess around with one of those little dot-matrix displays now - just think of all the things you could display... I mean, I can't think of anything I'd *want* to display, but that's not the point

James Cheese

While I love the build - what we REALLY need is an hour ASMR track of Clint using the Linus ratcheting screwdriver.

My vote for win 2k pro. I used the crap out that os. Never upgraded till XP x64 came out. It had all the same drivers and software XP had cause of the architecture just without the bells and whistles of XP. I also didn't have to deal with that pesky authentication genuine windows license XP rolled out cause, well my name works out. As for the tower of oddware power. Switch that fan controller with the air conditioner position-wise. Maybe it'll help the cig lighter. Can't wait to see the components all work together.

PiraTed

Ah that "Personal Computer's Air Conditioner" is a throwback for me. At a web host I worked at years ago, we had many early-mid 2000's servers in regular slim desktop cases. They all had those fans in the front panel since they weren't the ideal chassis for use in a data center environment. Obviously cheap fans in 24/7 use die out, half of them didn't work and even if they did the cooling was negligible. Anyhow a great ridiculous setup there Clint, looking forward to seeing it be a full computer (if there's room behind the web of cabling).

Yoshizard64

It makes you wonder how many units these vendors sold for each of these pieces of oddware.

SuperTekBoy

I still have the Antec 300 in use for one of my PCs. :)

SuperTekBoy

I think the first top part actually looks really nice! :D And the whole thing is wonderfully silly. I would want to use a motherboard with a usable integrated graphics. Perhaps an integrated GeForce 4 mx if you have one. Windows XP with how it looks fits this build nicely.

Uncleawesome

The Silverstone LCD might look great on the Megaluminum Monster. Cool, but not overly ostentatious.

Henry

There is something about this… that reminds me of The Fast and the Furious and ramping up for that first big 1/4 mile race. The ridiculousness of the customization and controlling car components with computers. This just screams early 2000s so XP will be the perfect addition. Oh, and maybe some NOS. I love this idea, the build, and the video. Thanks as always, Clint!

Nate Greene

I only ever had an Antec 900 and Antec 902... To get my hands on the fabled 1200, I could ever only dream. Did make a ripping-tower with the 902 though, put in 9x BD/DVD drives and ran the "Automatic Ripping Machine (ARM)" project

TBthegr81

The Antec 1200! What an awesome case. This was the case I used with my first fully custom PC build for my Intel Sandy Bridge era. I even splurged for the matching oversized Antec PSU. The whole configuration worked great for nearly 10 years before finally upgrading a few years ago for a 3rd gen Ryzen 7 build. I had the version that had fans in the front of the bays with manual fan speed knobs. It was cool to turn them all up when a super serious gaming session was about to begin, ha ha. I still have the whole thing covered up in my tech archive.

Taylor B

The pinnacle of PC builds.

Frederick G.

I think you're (re-)defining a new style of the hobby: EXCESSIVE COMPUTING

Jim Leonard

Totem-ly Awful Tower... love it!

HonkingGoose

Not sure if such a product exists, but you should add 5 1/4" automotive/aviation gauges

Hernando Heilbron

I miss drive bays! Two 5.25" drives, two 3.5" drives, CDROM, fan controllers, audio interface... cigarette lighters... I would troll Fry's Electronics looking for the most bizarre drive bay accessories. It is a degree of personalization I feel we need back in our lives!

Robert Jon Mudry

Not really knowledgeable or opinionated enough for ideas on the build, outside of just thinking XP would have the right vibe - but if I can humbly suggest calling it the Tower of Babel.

Valora Inverse

For the rest of the build, you need a bunch of RGB inside - fans, light strips, memory, etc. The front is lit up the Las Vegas Strip, the inside should be too. And it would give the fan controller front panel something to do. Part of me wants to say liquid cooling for total overkill, however at that point weight will start becoming a big issue and this isn't a GPU/CPU build. Could you have someone fabricate an internal frame to hold all the passthru bracket panels? That would make it less of a snag hazard when transporting.

Library of Context

The kind of nonsense I live for. Never change, Clint. :) BTW I finally watched the Tube Filter dealie video yesterday, and man I thought the sound was familiar!! https://twitter.com/RetroSwimAU/status/1656113767586070528

RetroSwim

As soon as I saw the title, I knew an antec 1200 was involved. I used to own two of them, one was a 12 hard drive fileserver with 4 of the stock fan hdd cages. Kept the drives super cool and acted as an air filter for my room with some mesh on the front of the case.

iamdarkyoshi

My thoughts would be to use Windows XP Media Center Edition on an Athlon XP MB

John Piscopo

Xp seems correct for this build, but it's a wonderfully stupid build, so maby windows xp media center edition or windows me? I've always thought an am/fm car stereo for 5.25" bay would make sense, sort of. Thanks for actually building this mad dream 😅 PS: UV lights and 2000's watercooling

Tossabaddle

Something Ivy Bridge maybe? Though I'm not sure if a board exists in that generation that would meet the needs for the ports.

Vaggumon

It's just nuts how large GPUs have gotten, having all those 5.25" drive bays here totally prevents the longest cards being installed. No doubt that's one reason so many current cases forgo them altogether.

LGR

My very first custom build was an Antec 1200, and I was still using that case for my primary rig until a couple years ago when GPUs finally got too long to fit. Loved everything about it except moving it, it weighed over 30 lbs empty.

TORQUENDB

Hm, y'know even though the fish tank isn't an option, some kind of odd side panel add-on would be a great addition indeed. I'll have to keep an eye out for things!

LGR

The only thing missing from that tower is the fish tank on the side. It would be called the Tower of Wet Absurdities?

Frederic St-Georges

I’ve gotten the same comments on every cleaning video I’ve ever done, whether it’s canned air or a compressor. It’s all just going to count as more video engagement, fine by me!

LGR

I uploaded a video to my personal channel a couple months ago and used an air compressor to dust my PC. Good lord at all the comments saying I was going to destroy my computer 😅. Anything from destroying the fans (I clearly held them stationary in the video) to using an air compressor would generate a bunch of static electricity or introduce moisture into the PC. The last two seem to be "myths" (in parenthesis since it technically could be an issue, but isn't for me) propagated by articles with sponsored links to the DataVac or similar products. Curious to see if this video will be inundated with those comments when it goes live. God help you if you install an AIO cooler with the tubes at the top later in this video 🤣

BatteryPoweredBricks

The Antec Tower of absurd Accessory Antics. Awesome.

Catriona

Once you get to the final big mess of wires inside, "FIRE" may be the appropriate worry to have 😄

LGR

I only just started watching and the amount of "FEAR" next to your head is giving me a sense of dread about where this is going to go... XD

Kris Asick

That's exactly the idea! I'm thinking Socket 939 or early AM2

LGR

When you get the computery bits working it should be like some sort of Athlon 64/7800GT type build to really sell the mid 2000's of the whole thing
