LGR - Iron Assault Review

https://youtu.be/TjODoBYMGdU

An obscure DOS game retrospective? Dang, it's been a while.

Let's take a look at Iron Assault from 1995 by Graffiti, the same Milan-based developers as the Screamer series of games! Compared to contemporary mech games like Mechwarrior 2 and Earthsiege, it's not particularly impressive.

But it's got some neat features that make it worth looking at, I think. Namely the inclusion of full motion video cutscenes made using miniatures and stop motion animation! The gameplay is pretty enjoyable too, at least for a couple hours or so before it wears out its welcome.

That watch communicating with a CRT is something I am looking forward to :D Never seen that before. Also looking forward to dial up connection thing as I have been trying to create my own ISP myself, but it was not so easy. And some people said it was impossible.

Uncleawesome

This is absolute gold. I will be happy to add it to my Mech section. Love me some mechhy tonk goodness. If only you could change the colour scheme, I could go full House Steiner!

TheLeatherMushroom

If this were Regular Game Reviews, I'm sure we'd get "If I wanted to load my B.M. with explosives, I'd order from Taco Bell! URRRRRRGH."

Bryan McIntosh

Heh. I'd wager it contributed.

LGR

Explosive B.M. Sounds like too much off brand Mountain Dew.

Yes that was pointed out earlier, it'll be fixed in the final vid :) And thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed! Old mech games really are a special kind of charming

LGR

Nothing like a quick burst of BM action, I say!

LGR

Great video Clint. I loved Mech games. The box art is fantastic - it was almost a shame to see the cellophane come off. I agree that the stop motion was great. It immediately reminded of Robocop's ED 209. I really enjoyed the video. Thank you. (I don't know if I'm supposed to point things out, so apologies in advance if that's not the done thing. At 3:36, the screen says February 20, but you say '22 February'.)

Scott Leitch

Looks like a fun game in bursts.

Alyxx the Rat

I was gonna say I'd never heard of that one, but nope! It was known as Ultrabots here in the US. The original release had an incredible box design.

LGR

It is the best. I want to know what happened to the miniatures they used.

LGR

My fond non-Battletech mech game memory: Xenobots from Novalogic

BastetFurry

Absolutely love the stop motion. :)

SuperTekBoy

This is going to drive me insane. I distinctly remember the European cover of the game being in a jewelcase at my hand's reach at some point in my life, but I most certainly don't remember playing this game (I do remember Mechwarrior 2 and 3, of course). Maybe it was at a friend's house, but I don't see why would they have the European version, unless it was a bootleg, which now that I think about it, was probably the case.

Pablo Rodriguez

Someday, I hope! Both are very high up in my mental "want to cover" wishlist

LGR

Ooh… Mechwarrior 2 and Earthsiege! Awesome memories. Any chance we get a review of those classics?

Joon Choi

Thank you!

LGR

Check out MechCommander and Missionforce: Cyberstorm! Neither are precisely like JA, but they are at least strategy/tactics games based in the worlds of Mechwarrior and Earthsiege, respectively.

LGR

Is so great to see lazy game reviews making a return to Lazy Game Reviews! And this one was a very entertaining review.

LJFox

The whole Wnet concept was giving me some Jagged Alliance vibes, and now I wish there would be a game similar in concept to Alliance but with mechs

Hernando Heilbron

Here's hoping it gets digitally re-released someday! Gotta wonder who holds the rights anymore.

LGR

πŸ’₯😁

LGR

Yeah I quite like both of them. It's interesting to see the US artwork is the more understated compared to Europe. Typically it's the other way around!

LGR

May as well let loose everything you’ve got, all at once

LGR

True that! I need to find more Italian knockoff games, all those movies are a twisted pleasure and Iron Assault was unexpectedly enjoyable

LGR

"Once your BM has enough explosive potential" πŸ˜„πŸ˜„ Took me a minute to catch that one.

50_SHADES_OF_BEIGE

Very Cool! 😎 MW2 Mercenaries is still king in my opinion.

50_SHADES_OF_BEIGE

Ah, thanks, I'll fix it!

LGR

I find it interesting that Italian game knock-offs (Iron Assault is essentially Wolfenstein 3-D with mech sprites) in the 90s have mostly the same aesthetics as their movie industry knock-offs of 80s films (see films like "Troll 2", "2019: After the Fall of New York", "Strike Commando", "The Last Warrior", etc.) Cheezy dialog, bubblegum-and-shoestring effects, etc.

Jim Leonard

As an Italian, I appreciate this review :) BTW, there is a slight typo in the script, don't know if you've already fixed it for the final edit: 3:35 - you say "It's the 22nd of February" while it should be the 20th!

Antonio M Buonomo

I'm always trying to avoid my bms having too much explosive potential

Adult Sword Owner

I think I saw that game in a magazine ad, but I've never played it, nor see it in a store. Thanks for bringing it out of the shadows and probably make me put it in my GoG wish list!

Frederic St-Georges

Nice! DOS retrospective sunday <3 Gotta get some mech games going on my pi-disbox!

Tossabaddle

Never played it but I remember the artwork of the alternative version you showed, and some old magazine reviews. The US artwork is more... metal! In a good way, really creative and catchy for a mech game.

Definitely! Once you get the controls down it's some good ol' brainless fun

LGR

Missed this one growing up... I'll have to check it out! Looks like a good 'turn the mind off and blow stuff up' kinda game!

Jeremy

Nice! I was hoping it wouldn't be completely unknown to folks

LGR

Holy cow, I remember this game as a kid. Loved it to bits.
