LGR - The Original IBM Think Pad

Long before IBM made notebook computers, they made actual notebooks. These were pads with the word "THINK" printed on it, making it a literal "think pad." And these pads ended up being direct inspiration for the later ThinkPad machines in terms of naming, too!

Gotta love "semantic satiation!"

LGR

Hey that sounds like my Dad's career with IBM as well! We actually have one of the "Think" signs at home, he keeps it in the computer room and I never understood it as a kid haha.

Sarah

Thanks so much for the support, and I hope you continue to enjoy!

LGR

I’m new. I love your videos. Keep going! Greetings from Italy!

FWIW, eBay has an affiliate program. Idk if that works for entire categories of products or just single listings etc. https://partnernetwork.ebay.com

This is mentioned in the Triumph of the Nerds (GREAT documentary). https://youtu.be/X7bbQW2RLug?t=3m26s

I think I've heard/seen the word "think" so many times that it looks weird now. P.S. I'm typing this on a ThinkPad T430 :)

Eric Siegel

Sounds like a church!

the multimedia page linked above has a .wav of the song too :o

Peter Metzger

I think my dad had the sheet music somewhere

I watched this in 4K on my 4K monitor while playing Dark Souls 3 on the other monitor.

Nope. It's a real thing and a piece of history.

LGR

So weeeeiiiird

LGR

I don't have any kind of affiliations to anywhere that sells them!

LGR

I have one of these from my bestie. She and her father both worked at IBM. Can confirm that they are indeed real, and they are "just right". :-)

Definitely getting IBM merchandise for my Dad's birthday this year. He got his start working with punch cards and then later with IBM mainframes.

Iron Arse Hands

I would totally buy one of these.. you should affiliate link it :)

I love your history videos. When I was in third grade I thought I'd put together my two loves - computers and history and be a computer historian. That would have been fun if I could have found a job for it.

Jailyn Dyer

I want a Thunk pad.

Tempus Fugit

It had flawless handwriting recognition.

Corporate culture needs not only a notepad but also a corporate song! Ever onward I-B-M! https://www-03.ibm.com/ibm/history/multimedia/everonward_trans.html

Think! Eat! Sleep! Watch LGR!

lol, Clint is this a joke?

Zach LeBlanc

Like your taste in pens! The Pilot Metro series is great, I am fond of their fountain pens.

Funny, I'd never heard of these until about three days ago when a coworker sent me a link to a story about these. Wish I could tell him about this video but Friday was his last day.

Jeff DeWitt

You got it!

LGR

Just realized that Apple's "Think Different" campaign is a response to IBM's "Think."

Steve Lovelace

If you look closely at 1:08, you can see the precursor to the Intel 8088. IBM really was ahead of their time.

avfusion

BAHAHAHA, I saw the notification and went "oooooo" (I'm a Thinkpad whore) and then saw the thumbnail! Got me! Haha, nice one :P

Zeke

Ha, yeah by the time I was done recording this I had no idea what "THINK" meant anymore.

LGR

Glad to hear it :D

LGR

What's this, a tech channel talking about non-tech??? Booooo!!!!! Nah, just kidding :P This video is actually really interesting and I enjoy these kinds of videos from you that deviate from your normal thing. (Even though the word "think" has kind of lost some meaning from being mentioned so much here, haha.) And wow, I just saw that you're almost at 6000 dollars per month for Patreon! You've come so far from when you started on here :)

Lindsay Michelle

Ha! Love it!

Addison Chernow

Fank you!

LGR

Aw yeah. Blues Brothers always meets my approval.

LGR

Fantastically fun featurette!

JennaKay

Awesome, glad to have shared something new!

LGR

Quite welcome, it's a great historical tidbit.

LGR

Oh, wow. As a ThinkPad guy, this is all kinds of awesome. Thank you for making it.

This is immediately what I thought of when I was watching the video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vet6AHmq3_s

Avery G

That's crazy, never heard about that!
