LGR - The IBM PS/2 Model 90 XP 486

This PC went for $17,000 back when it released in 1990. Heck, it would've been thousands more than that with the way mine is configured. What a delightful beast!

Someday... Someday I'll have an MCA sound card.

Paul

Glad to hear :)

I have to be honest. I've never liked much of anything that IBM produced. That goes for the PS/2 systems, their later Pentium-based systems, and their Thinkpads. I've always felt like they were the equivalent of buying a military jeep for your daily commuting. It's ugly. It's heavy. It doesn't necessarily do anything that a consumer vehicle can't do (as far as commuting) and you'll pay a lot more for it just because that's how government buying works. And That's just how I've always felt about IBM products. I think they were uncompetitive and simply managed to get by with their high prices simply because people respected the name. I think the MCA architecture did nothing but to further alienate IBM.

Even if I may not be into collecting old tech like this, it's always fascinating to watch videos regarding it..

This look a lot like my IBM Model 55 Z, 286 with The 287 Math Co-Prosessor. I think it in my back room. I had to hit it to get the hard drive to spin up. but it would work. I have AutoCad 12 on it. It was my work horse back in the day.

With ancient websites like these, I always wonder if the webmaster still knows they're paying for the domain name and hosting. Not that it costs anything to have a basic HTML page and a dot com these days, but still...they must look at their bank statements and wonder where they're sending two quid a month to!

the homepage was last updated in 2012, wouldn't hurt to try email maybe.

i had the 92' version of this desktop at my parents when I was little. Was a 486/33 upgrade to /66 I believe. Was the first computer my parents ever had. Was bundled with kings quest 6. Oh the nostalgia! Epic pinball :)

A jingle that will never leave my brain

Considering it doesn't look like the site has been updated in about 13 years, yeah, I'd doubt it :P Neat though, I hadn't heard of the ChipChat card til now.

What a beautiful beastie! Startup sounds are very similar to my Pentium 3 1GHz Win98SE tower, right down to the wonderfully whiny HDD and 3.5 inch floppy drive ^_^. Too bad the MCA slots limits its upgrade possibilities, finding MCA expansion cards is very difficult - and MCA sound cards are almost non-existent (finding a real unicorn is probably much easier o.o). Here's a list of MCA sound cards, straight from Wikipedia: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_Channel_architecture" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micro_Channel_architecture</a>#Sound_cards The only one I've ever seen is a ChipChat Sound 32 at a local swap meet about 6 years ago; it was untested and beat to hell, yet the seller wanted $180.00 and was being sold as-is. How nice O_o Incredibly enough, the ChipChat MCA Sound Card webpage it's still up and working (and apparently frozen in time): <a href="https://www.chipchat.com/mca/soundcard/soundcard.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://www.chipchat.com/mca/soundcard/soundcard.html</a> I doubt they'll accept any orders for one nowadays though.

How ya gonna do it? PS/2 it!

Likewise, I really like to share startup sounds whenever it makes sense :)

LGR

Happy new years!

LGR

It's a relatively quiet machine for the time, but compared to modern desktops it's a real event :D

LGR

Thanks, Clint! Happy New Year!

Alexandra Marie

Man that start up as it turns on, it sounds like I'm preparing to jump into the future. Then it reminds me of all the sounds from Alien on the Nostromo.

Justin Dotson

I hope you don’t miss the opportunity to explain “why microchannel” next time *wink*

Bastien Nocera

what a beautiful startup sound

Kijikun

wow! That power on noise i forgot pcs used to be so loud!

New LGR is perfect for my hangover! Happy New Year everyone!! &lt;3

Awesome upload! - the sound of that thing spinning up sure brings back memories :D

The MCA story is pretty wild. And I've always loved that the companies against IBM were "The Gang of Nine." How adorably epic.

LGR

Yay, uploads!

LGR

I'm betting a near-future video I have in the works will do that even more :)

LGR

That concluding point. Ouch. I look forward to the Tech Tales on Microchannel - by the time I hopped on board to a PC, that was long, long defeated. What a beast though. Even if it does't like up to the performance part of it ;)

Rob Caporetto

Oooh!

Robert Butler

This makes me nostalgic for my old Tandy

Terry Lee

YESSS! So excited for a new upload :D
