LGR - Volta V Wooden Computer Review

Really got lucky with being able to cover this one! So far it's only been journalists from the likes of Wired and Kotaku getting to review the V, and I think I'm the first YouTuber that gets a crack at it before it gets sent off to Linus Tech Tips and TechnoBuffalo. So if you follow the big tech channels and see this, you can say you saw it here first ;)

But yeah, I got lucky as it turns out this machine is manufactured just a short drive from my house! The CEO even came over to hand-deliver me the review unit, really nice. Shame it's such a costly thing for what you get, but I also can *kind of* understand the reasoning. Either way, hope you enjoy the review :)

LGR - Volta V Wooden Computer Review

I definitely "wood" not buy that at that pricey price, it's basically common pc parts in a wood box, there's absolutely no craftsmanship/styling involved in making said wooden box and nothing that says blingbox, I get the wood appeal but no way at that crazy price

All hail the woodgrain!

Justin Dotson

Man, that price point is totally ridiculous. At least it looks pretty cool...

SammyToesis

V has come to.

When I saw the spec and I'm thinking damn a powerhouse in a wooden box, this is sooo cool and I want it NOW. Then I found out the price... I'm kinda depressed now :(

Luke Chang

There are some notes in the manual about maintaining the wood over time to make sure it doesn't go weird. If it does though, they cover repairs with a lifetime warranty.

LGR

Oh it's quite serious and irreversible by now

LGR

Clint, your wood-grain addiction is getting serious xD Bahahah

reminds me when I had to replace my old 90s tower last year due to gigantic videocards. It took me tons of money to get something that looks sorta dicent, but I need to spray those stupid window oneday. I mean seriously i don't need a window in my pc. Wonder when they will make a wooden case for 3 or 4 videocards. Because I fucking love that design.

I'd be curious to learn how the manufacturer over came the issue of heat with using a natural product like that. Even if they designed it with the proper clearances in mind and fans; wood still dries out over long periods of time when exposed to fluctuations in ambient temps. Still very rad case!

Oh and I assume it's USA only?

Would have been nice if they offered just the case to buy rather then a complete system. Does look lovely though :)

Looks neat!

About that last part, what are your thoughts regarding the InWin's wooden case that they showed during Computex this year?

Wallace Fung Wooh Sheen

Ha! While I do want to edit a video on an old PC sometime, I wouldn't dare do that with my normal 4K fare :P

LGR

For some reason I was taken aback by how powerfully modern your "daily driver" PC is Clint. I could only see you doing all your video editing on a 486 with math co-processor. ;D

MagikGimp

Yep, there are endless custom solutions to the problem, but my point is that it should've come with this sorted out already for being so expensive :)

LGR

Thank you!

LGR

Feel free to beat the professionals at their own game then, I'd be happy to critique it ;)

LGR

I like it and although I love your watching your retro stuff, it was cool to see you do something more modern. Hope there's more man!!!

Dunno, that thing looks like an ugly slab of wood with no finesse. Just look at an old radio or TV set or some of the old stuff Techmoan shows off, that case tries to emulate that but fails miserably. I bet that even i, if i had a workshop with the right tools, could make a better one.

Sux on the sharp edges and the price. You could add some rubber edging to it Trim-Lok Neoprene Rubber Edge Trim, Fits 1/8" Edge , 5/16" Leg Length, Rounded Profile Edge, Length 25 Feet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NL4CDDY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_d-lCzbTB6SG8R

Except it was actual walnut and not veneer. :)

Bryndal Dwyre

I could smell the "veneer" all the way here! Most enjoyable as always. :D
