It's spooky in more ways than one.

As a software dev, it reached a whole new level when they wrote laws stating I could be co-opted, without recourse to even speak to a lawyer, to make changes to any software I have access to. With the threat of jail time for non-compliance or seeking legal advice.

Compare that against the arguments put forward by spy agencies in submissions to the PJCIS for why these powers are essential. David Lyon is one of the leading academics focusing on surveillance, especially the impact of 9/11 & Snowden’s revelations I’ve done a bunch of assignments on/around surveillance in Australia and it gets worse every time, so just for masochsisms sake I’m heading into honours of criminology with the focus on surveillance
