LGR - Audio Technica ATH-ADG1X Headset Review

$300 for a gaming headset? Here's hoping they're super well-built...

LGR - Audio Technica ATH-ADG1X Headset Review

Comments

For $300 those headphones better come with VR -

Christian Meneses

You're so on the mark with the $100. That's exactly what it should cost.

Desmo

You'd THINK :/

LGR

Disappointing, You would think for a car payment they could make good headphones.

So I got completely confused when I saw Classic Room Commenting because you are next to each other on my Patreon update list and both just reviewed headphones.

In the case of this headset, I'd say ADG instead stands for "amazingly disappointing garbage"

LGR

Well in this case I paid nothing, so I certainly got what I paid for ;) But yeah, I've got a pair of decent Sennheisers lying around as well, they've been awesome over the years

LGR

Sennheiser. You get what you pay for.

Classic Game Room

Interesting model number... *looks over at own "Ancient DOS Games" logo* Can't say I want a pair though; Sennheiser has been my brand for over a decade. :)

I feel like these are being tailored to the market of "Expensive junk." Eg BEATS

Avaris Clari

They're "good" for music, but not "ideal" for music is the thing. The frequency range isn't bad, but they don't sound nearly as rich or "full" as I prefer for listening to music. I tend to listen to stuff with a lot of low-end and these don't have much in that area, for example. Compare the specs to models meant for dedicated music playback, and you'll see things like an even greater frequency response, higher impedance, and planar magnetic drivers. Plus, the overall headphone housing design of these is clearly geared towards gaming, with the permanent microphone and such :)

LGR

I'm afraid you're in violation of internet law: If you own a Zoom H2 you are required to make ASMR videos. I'm sorry, I don't make the laws. ;) Holy crap! That frequency range is crazy! What exactly is it again that makes these not ideal for listening to music? BTW, please do let us know if they contact you with a response. I was really pleased to hear when you got a response to your feedback with that recent review of a game.

Absolutely. And there are probably half a dozen headsets just off the top of my head that I'd recommend over this one for less than the price they're asking!

LGR

Here's the one I have! https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00X5EB7QO/ And here's a fantastic video on the topic, it's what got me interested in them :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=22kx0q5j-JA

LGR

Aye, they usually make fantastic stuff, so I certainly expected a lot more too.

LGR

I play piano and Audio Technica makes the best studio monitors I have ever used. You expect a lot more from them especially at that price point.

Matt Cain

I agree with Rob, that's an extreme disappointment for such a premium price point. Completely off the point though, one thing that did interest me more than even the headphones was your vacuum tube headphone amp. Where can I find one of those? I never knew they existed & it looks pretty neat!

For that range, I feel I'd be better off using Seinheiser 598s and a modmic for $100 less and get nice sound without a completely busted and pop-inducing controlbox.

Curus Keel

No kidding! I thought for sure this would be a 100% win coming from Audio Technica, but I was shocked at the quality... thought it might've just been my unit, yet other customer reviews say the same thing. Simply a bad design. :/

LGR

Ouch. Audio Technica certainly *should* be worth the premium price, but with that control box… it's certainly a bit of a disappointment. Heck, at the price they're asking for… it should be a bit more of a premium product. Certainly a bit of a shame on this one :(
