LGR - Duke Nukem 3D 20th Anniversary!

This is ONE of TWO videos that will go up this month featuring Duke Nukem 3D. The other one will be a full review in my usual style, whereas this one is just a nostalgic look back with some personal stories!

I really love using the Roland Soundcanvas mode with this game, the music just sounds incredibly well with my Roland SC-88 (in SC-55 mode). =D

I guess this means my mouse pad is 20 years old now. huh.

This was great! Always like hearing the stories behind someone's fandom, as well as the LGR MIGHTY DUKE VOICE. I was about 14 or so when I first played Duke on N64, and it was so satisfying to watch the cutscene of Duke kicking that eyeball through the uprights.

Haha, I did a similar thing with the parental lock. I figured out you could simply delete the .CFG file and the setup would reset, so you could then play totally unlocked with reinstalling!

I'm still trying to find those tapes! I was rummaging around the attic the other week looking all over for em, I know they're around

Age is just a number! But in this case that number is "old."

That sounds like a nice set of memories to have, too :) And yeah I have the European version as well, by Eidos! The rest of the box is very well-made though, despite a lack of embossing.

I have some viewers that have told me they weren't born until five years after Duke3D... talk about feeling old

LGR

I did the same when it came out! Loved that rewind feature of that version.

Laser trip mines in multiplayer really are the best thing, haha. Wish more games used them since then.

15 is pretty darned ideal for playing Duke3D, hehe.

I have a lot of fond memories of Duke - but I guess it came out at the right time (as I was ~15 at the time), so I got to have a lot of fun with it. But hearing about how it inspired you with modding, and graphics/audio stuff is amazing - and there's something to show for it.

Duke 3D was the game tha tought me how to use mouse and keyboard. Also it was the very first multiplayer game I ever played. Such memories :)

In multiplayer I remember setting laser traps, then shortly after hearing my friend swear at me from his room. Good times, good memories.

Loved Duke 3D. I ended up buying it again on Xbox Live and unlocking all the achievements so I could get access to see some new pics of DNF. Speaking of which, I loved DNF too! Hail to the king, baby!

wow i was 3 when duke 3d came out, i turned 4 that october.

Duke 3D was my favorite game as a kid as well and it being based in the real world was one the reasons I loved it so much. Even though I loved Doom II, I hated that it didn't look anything like earth even though it was supposed to be based on earth. I was a bit luckier than you though because my dad came home one Friday with the boxed full version which I then proceeded to play through over the weekend. I couldn't do it in one sitting like you since I had to let my dad play it too. We still have that box, even though it's not embossed like yours. I guess us Europeans are not cool enough for stuff like that. :)

You're making me feel old! I was in second semester of university when this came out. My grades were terrible that semester.

Love your stories from when you were a kid. This does seem like the ideal game for a boy going through puberty -- a good outlet for all those hormonal urges I guess, haha. I do agree you wouldn't be you without this game influencing you like it did. Speaking of your childhood, I'm still waiting on you posting your old Clint's World tapes. :P

I was nearly 7 when Duke 3D was released, but I don't remember wen exactly we got our copy. All I knew was that my dad bought it second-hand off a PC fanatic coworker because me and my sisters loved the original Duke Nukem so much. He was smart enough to activate the Parental Lock, but I was clever enough to figure out how to turn it off without needing a password (just uninstall then reinstall, lol). I was never tech-savvy enough to learn how to mod it myself, but I played it so much that at one point I was able to beat all three original episodes on "Let's Rock" difficulty without dying. It remains one of my all-time favorites to this day, and it's always awesome when you find another who enjoys it just as much.
