LGR - Sanitarium - PC Game Review Quickie

I think you're referring to Ultima 8: Pagan. Awesome hand that was.

Marnix

Does anyone know the name of the game that looks kind of like Runescape, which starts out with a cinematic with your character on a giant hand that drops you down from the sky into a fantasy world, only to be greeted by a character who some how knows your name?

Caleb Bott

My brain already melted the Grimwall and Olmec parts together as one, so I guess I would with certainty agree the second is redundant altogether :)

Marnix

Oddly enough, I felt Grimwall went on too long and then the Olmec part made it drag too almost unreasonable levels. But yeah, it certainly is a testament to its era. 1998 was an amazing year in PC gaming.

LGR

Awesome, hope you enjoy!

LGR

Very few scary moments for me, as I mentioned it's much more of just an overbearingly twisted and creepy world going on than it is scary :) But yeah, that's just me, and I can imagine some moments are frightening to some!

LGR

Worthwhile indeed, and as I mentioned, it doesn't follow all the same tropes that you may be used to so it's still a fresh experience

LGR

Fixed the Max and Grimwall parts, and changed around a few of my words to hopefully address the tone of the game a bit more. Thanks! That's one positive of these Quickies: I ramble on long enough that I can chop up what I say into something coherent and accurate later :P

This game is such a great testament of its time. Everything from the graphics used, the angstiness and the classic horror elements. This I discovered ten years after its release, but still. It made 1998 an even better year, retrospectively speaking. I kinda liked the out-thereness of Grimwall part, I just considered it as a fun mini-game proving craziness doesn't have to be all heavy all the time and at the same time setting the game apart from other games that ultimately went on for a little bit too long (just like this sentence). Anyway, looking forward to the full review!

Marnix

FYI: People don't call him Max just because, he actually remembers it and introduces himself as Max. :) Also, it's GRIMWALL. But yeah, this game is great. I think I explained more in my review, but I don't necessarily think this game is scary; I do put it in the horror genre, but it's definitely not like...frightening. Maybe more disturbing and creepy? Also, you used the sound effect, hahaha! I loved using that sound in my video. It's very... effective. Get it? Sound effect is effective.

PushingUpRoses

Games centred around horror or general creepiness typically don't appeal to me, mostly because I seem to be hardened against such things disturbing me, and this one's no different, but I get why games like these are as appealing as they are to other people, and from what I've seen and heard of this, both from yours and Roses' coverage, it's definitely one of the better ones to seek out! :D

Kris Asick

That actually sounds really interesting! I love point and click games.

Amy

I'm not usually into horror, but you've convinced me. I'll have to check this out sometime.

Esme

I remember when Sarah played this game on a stream. It was pretty creepy in a good way, but based on my personal tastes, some parts of the game overdid the scare factor for me. Love the isometric views though... it's so nostalgic for me and reminds me of games like the original Sims. :)

Lindsay Michelle

I could buy him changing from Max to a girl since (SPOILERS!!) it's his dead sister, so at least they're related. But yeah, changing into an Aztec god and such was more jarring than I could handle. Still worth it to get to the ending though!

LGR

I have always had a hard time finishing games that make you switch playable characters during the story. I feel like learning the identity of the character and how they perceive the world is a part of the story, and it is just too jarring when we go from say, a bandaged up mental patient, to a 10 year old girl. I get that there is something deeper going on in Sanitarium, so I tried not to take it so literally, but man this game really tests the limits! I got close to finishing the game but just couldn't get there. I think what I liked best about Sanitarium was the art style. The character portraits, environments, and even the text font all did a great job to convey the tone of the game. It still looks pretty good today! Thanks for doing a review :) Oh and that big box....on the list of must owns for sure!
