LGR - Secret Island of Dr. Quandary - PC Game Review

Comments

Ah ha! THIS is what I've been looking for ever since I played it at school as a kid a few times. It was on an iMac G3 and this game intrigued the heck out of me as a kid, even though I had no idea what the context of the game was. Thank you for uploading this, it brought back some awesome memories! And although I didn't know what I was doing in the game, I did complete the first two puzzles. Beyond that, I never got to progress because of limited time. Either that or I probably got bored of it :P

Alex

I've gotta wonder that myself. Like, did MECC and Sierra devs get drunk and exchange ideas somewhere along the line, only to have them resurface at the same basic time in these games? Because they're darned similar.

LGR

You're right about the dithering. Compared to the aforementioned Dr Brain game, some of the graphics actually look kinda rough. Still looks like fun though! I wonder if they had any idea the projects were probably happening in parallel?

LGR

It's lovingly cranky

LGR

Definitely not! Added a note about that in the updated version of this video

LGR

It doesn't mess around!

LGR

Perhaps next year!

LGR

True that, I added a small note about the intense dithering in the updated version of this video

LGR

A legendary arse

LGR

Maybe it's a subtle hint to buy a CD-ROM drive for future MECC games

LGR

I always liked this game, but man, Dr. Quandary is kind of a butthole.

Does it seem strange to play a game you installed via a 5.25in floppy that references a CD-Rom in-game?

Dithering in a 256 colour graphics mode? Waaaaat? >_>; Actually yeah, all things considered, this thing doesn't seem to play all that bad, but for a game designed to be offbeat and quirky the graphics really should've been done better. If you're having to resort to dithering when using a 256 colour graphics mode, you're doing something wrong. :P

Totally a 90s game (and there's nothing wrong with that) - and it looks like it's a great logic puzzle test for the kids. I have to admit, the get-off-our-lawn tone of the manual was priceless!

Rob Caporetto

Am I the only one that kept thinking "Island of Dr Brain" the whole time? :P (Although I thought Castle was the better game of the two!)

RetroSwim

Wow, this game has aged well, despite its graphics and the TOTALLY RADICAL [insert various 90s slang] CD game on the beach. Loved the blunt "no" in the manual - making kids solve them puzzles the old fashioned way!!!

Lindsay Michelle

I saw the title and thought I knew the game... Alas no. It was "Island of Dr. Brain". Any chance you're covering that this year?

Thanks, buddy. Eduentertainment media sure is entertaingucational.

I'd have been more attracted to this in my younger days if it had this Dr. Q instead: http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/images/4/48/Q_as_God.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120531094640&path-prefix=en Also, there's a room like the one with the gas, fire and lasers in Drangleic Castle in Dark Souls 2. Anyone that's played it knows what I'm talking about. lol
