It's canon to the classic Star-Lord comics, which were not part of Marvel initially. Certainly the bad guys in that comic were separatists who wanted tyranny and slavery, whereas Jason Quill was practically a saint. It's the cultural nuances that I'm taking liberties where otherwise left blank in canon, based on what I know of Bronze Age civilizations.
