Ask me anything #2
Added 2019-11-29 17:05:01 +0000 UTCHey everyone! Sorry I haven't been around much lately, November has been a crazy month, with YouTube, travelling, and this other project I had to do (unrelated to YouTube, just a course I'm doing) so, let's do another Q and A! Ask me anything, whatever ya like if you want, and I'll make a video about it in a few weeks. Thanks so much for your support! Also, in a few weeks there'll be another Patreon only video to make up my absence.

It certainly can and does! On occasion those overhead / POV shots with the music remind me a little of the beginning of Kubrick's The Shining - a definite dread trigger, which could explain why they make me so apprehensive - well done, you!

2020-01-09 10:41:59 +0000 UTCOh honestly I just find them online! Usually a mixture of stock footage I can find of the area, and if I can find any drone footage of the area. Then I just edit it a bit to set the scene if you will. Thank you! I always try and show don't tell, and with some of the music it can really get you in the mood of the location. Thank you!

2020-01-08 10:23:15 +0000 UTCI didn't mean those - didn't explain myself too well there, sorry. I meant the POV / location clips that play when we 'arrive' at the area where the crime took place. There was one in particular that was so immersive it felt like you were 'there' - unfortunately I can't remember which chapter it was in 🙄. I THINK it was the one where we're travelling over the desert? to the small town where the disappearences took place. Or we're travelling above a road to the crime location. They are the shots that 'set the scene' so to speak. They don't look like they're taken from a news channel or from other channels, they mostly all look like you've found them from a geography or travel (or stock footage) type site. The point is I think they are fantastic as they really bring the chapter to 'life' and I think they are part of what sets your chapters apart from other crime channels that use mostly still shots, so kudos to you! (I would really like to know though!)

2020-01-08 08:50:16 +0000 UTCThe intro? That's super simple. The smoke effect I got from a free stock footage site then added the logo I created and a blur effect. Nothing too fancy!

2019-12-17 23:24:36 +0000 UTCI would really like to know where you get your overhead / introductory visuals from - they are SO well done. Please do tell.

2019-12-17 22:00:20 +0000 UTCHere’s a new one... what video did you just make private?! I had a playlist of videos I had to watch to have watched every one of yours and now one is private! 😮😮😂😂

2019-12-13 08:22:45 +0000 UTCCAAAAAN'T WAIT FOR THIS ONE!!! The last one was exciting enough! Now I know what to expect, I'm mega thrilled by the thought of episode 2! Also - SO stoked to see your patreon going up - it's a beautiful thing!!

2019-12-12 19:51:42 +0000 UTCHi there Simone! I don't have a problem with either word, prostitute, or sex worker, sex therapist, receptionist at a brothel - lol - I don't mind WHAT it's called, as long as the info is accurate. But I can tell you that I have a few friends who are 'receptionists at brothels', and after seeing your post I asked them, what DO you prefer to be called? They had an interesting answer - it depends BY WHOM they are being spoken to. If it's a guy with a bottle in hand. slurring, being foul and disgusting, they would EXPECT 'prossie', and wouldn't be hurt by it. If it was any 'normal' fella, anything from night worker to prostitute was MORE than acceptable by the ladies. Just thought you might like to hear what the Aussie 'ladies of the night' (something I'm SURE I've heard Mike call this profession before), but yes, in all ways, ALWAYS, we must be sensitive of everyone's feelings. So they tell me. ;o) lol. Peace. Nicole. X

2019-12-12 19:50:28 +0000 UTCHi. I have really enjoyed all your videos. I have but one complaint. When you mention that sex workers have been murdered, you say " prostitute" in a pretty crappy way. I think it would be alot better if you called them "sex workers". It doesnt sound so derogatory. What do you think? Its bad enough that so many girls get killed while doing sex work. Regardless of what brought the girls down the road of drugs and sex work, they dont need to be remembered as bad people. I hope you can see it in a better light. Love watching your shows, Regards, Simone

2019-12-10 09:18:22 +0000 UTCHere’s a few to pick and choose from. Having investigated so many varied crimes, do you think it makes you more jaded, toward people or the criminal justice system? How do people react when you tell them the kind of content you cover on your channel? Any highlights from your trip to the US? Is there a case that you won’t cover, too disturbing? Did cats rule the world before the Internet?
Laura J
2019-12-06 00:20:04 +0000 UTCAlso, what is the missing persons case that you have the most questions about and/or are most interested in seeing resolved?
Lauren Lovecraft
2019-12-02 01:37:49 +0000 UTCDo you have any background in journalism/reporting? You manage to condense a lot of information into a watchable length of time and still hit the main points of the case really well.
Lauren Lovecraft
2019-12-02 01:36:36 +0000 UTCWhat is your dream job? Maybe you are doing it already right now but had to ask. I guess if that question is not enough or is boring I have to ask if there is one place you would love to visit where would it be? I am talking specific location(s) in a certain city in the world. Oh and for the heck of it I will throw one more in ... Have you ever played Gaelic football? Also if I came to Ireland what is the most affordable place to go see it? (ticket, air bnb / hotel, restaurants)

2019-12-01 11:08:21 +0000 UTCWhat is your eventual ambition? You’re a young fella & you have a different angle on crime & lots of followers, so do you have plans to take it to the next level & maybe pitch for a TV show or something?
Lorna Mangan
2019-12-01 06:35:10 +0000 UTCI haven't made this AMA yet so ask away if there's anything in particular you'd like to ask!

2019-11-30 23:37:07 +0000 UTCHow often do you get the opportunity to reach out and talk with the relevant parties? I noticed a handful have come and left additional messages that you've pinned, but have you been able to talk with direct or secondary sources? Your research is next-level, compared to some of the other content creators that touch on your topics!

2019-11-30 22:36:48 +0000 UTCGreetings, Mike. I think you're a breath of fresh air. I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel! I'm still catching up, so I might have missed it. Do you have a video in which you tell us a bit about yourself? I love your content, your aluminum foil hat, the way you randomly insert nanosecond clips into your videos, the way you say "th," and pretty much everything else. I can't say I like the Alex Jones clips, but that's not your fault. He's repulsive of his own volition. Anyway, your work is something I look forward to after studying for five hours, then working for nine. At least I know I have a nice glass of wine, my pjs, and That Chapter to look forward to. Many, many thanks!!
Laura Jane
2019-11-30 21:30:06 +0000 UTCHi Mike, what do you see yourself doing in 10 years? And are you a cat person or a dog person?
Carolyne S.
2019-11-30 14:30:36 +0000 UTCMe too! Love it!
Carolyne S.
2019-11-30 14:29:40 +0000 UTCHi Mike, how are you? I am well thank you. My question is how are you able to obtain the rights to all the clips you use. Your show is so amazing and one of the reasons is all the material in it. As well as the adorable host.
Maggyjames
2019-11-30 13:08:03 +0000 UTCWhat case, of those you've done so far, is the scariest or most unsettling in your opinion? For me it has to be the Annecy shootings.
YamsDev
2019-11-30 09:59:19 +0000 UTCMike, will you do a video on the Hoia-Baciu forest? Would be interesting to see your take on it.
Jaryd Hochberger
2019-11-30 09:40:28 +0000 UTCI like this idea. Even a tour of your studio would be a great treat.
Vanessa Vigil-Martinez
2019-11-30 09:37:13 +0000 UTCi don't know if this has been asked before,,, but would you take us on a tour through your town or maybe make a compilation of your favourite places and things about where you live?

2019-11-30 07:13:28 +0000 UTCI've been wondering for some time now, what initially got you interested in this side of things?? I don't expect you to share ultra personal things, but it would be interesting to know how you got into this. Some of the other people who deal with this subject on Youtube come across really creepily, but you don't, even your jokes seem in good taste, and I imagine even the people closest to the person in question, would have a laugh at your jokes. :) Do you ever end up feeling kind of....dirty??? Or at least, as if your head is filled to the brim with the information you immerse yourself in?? I find that even after just binge watching a few of your clips, that I go to sleep thinking of solutions to these puzzles. You must get totally 'surrounded' by this info and the gruesome details, which can't be good for ones state of mind at times!! Although I'm sure you handle it just fine, having a smile on your face 24/7. Do you work with JUST yourself on this expansive task you give yourself every few days? I would find it difficult to get everything done! And admire your stoic ability to work, work, work. My partner is similar with his work, computer graphics engineering is what he does and it's all consuming. I would love to see you travel the world, to some different corners of the planet where you could uncover some older, maybe even ANCIENT crimes?? I would be fascinated to see what you would come up with. I'm sure I'll think of more questions - lol - so I'll be back to edit this comment in no time, no doubt about it. There's one question on the tip of my tongue that I've wanted to ask you for AGES, but is lost to me now..... ugh! Hate that!! lol.. okkkk.... I'll be back with more Q's. :) I'm back! lol .... is there any part of That Chapters subjects that attract you more than others?? I'd noticed a few more missing people lately than any others - no Capitain clips, no tin foil hat moments - are you focusing more on this side of things now? Do you have much interaction with Police? I hear that you can pretty much call them up and get any information, as long as it's not classified or protected for whatever reason, of course - but I was wondering if you have some friendly Police officers that help you to understand all of this stuff. Where do you hope to go with That Chapter, in the end?? Do you wish to remain a Youtube channel?? Or do you have bigger aspirations for your imagination and creative ways? It would be a fine thing to see you on Netflix! Also - have you ever thought about making a game out of some of the whackier clips - it would be highly distasteful to make them from the cases, unless it could be presented in the correct manner. Anyhow - was thinking an advanced kind of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego type thing. Anyway! I'll quit with my questions - thanks for saying THREE with a 'th' in the three girls clip - I was MOST impressed. lol. :) Also - would love to see you do some live Twitch streams where you can get a bunch of people to ask you questions and answer them live! It would save you about a years worth of recording/editing/etc.etc. :) Thanks for all of your incredible work Mike!! You rock socks! Nico Powell P.s. let me know if you're still interested in someone doing the subtitles - I'm happy to do them if they're needed. :) P.P.s. new video idea - Daniel Holtzclaw - creepy guy if ever there was one, and a REALLY messy case where he ended up serving 250+ years.

2019-11-30 06:37:24 +0000 UTCWhen did you start doing the catchphrases as a regular part of the videos and was it organic or something somebody suggested? I love them! Have you thought about throwing up your background music as a playlist somewhere? How do you keep the Patreon so cheap?! Can you give an example of a video that you’ve researched all the way and not recorded? How many do you have “in the can” ready to go up, or do you post almost as soon as they’re done? I went and saw RedHanded the podcast do a live event in Islington last month, was great, anything you’d consider doing? Not sure how your fan base size is compared to them. Do you look at your analytics and if so, where do most of your viewers come from country wise? Has anybody watched every single one of your videos and told you? I think I must be pretty close to every one now, a few left to watch that maybe aren’t my scene but giving them a go as you felt them video worthy! May edit if I think of any more but if not, thanks for literally hours and hours of enjoyment.
Robert
2019-11-30 02:52:27 +0000 UTCHow long does it typically take you from start to finish to produce one episode? I'm in agreement with other viewers that you produce one of the best True Crime/Mystery programs, and I'm wondering about your learning curve? What type of things have you learned about producing your videos, or some things you may have changed since you first started until now? Some of the things I notice or really like about your videos as opposed to others is: the length of your videos is good. You don't try to fill time unintelligently and can be concise and the the point so the viewer doesn't get bored. Also, music...it doesn't drown out the narration. How did you decide what music to use? You make commentary that is often interesting, sometimes humorous, but never tries to make the viewer feel manipulated to think about something one way or another, it's just authentic. I'm wondering if that is a result of another reporter type person's influence?
Susan L. Prince
2019-11-30 02:01:57 +0000 UTCHave you always been a fan of true crime, conspiracy and the strange and mysterious? Was that always going to be the focus of your channel? Huge fan, love ya mike!! By the way you look great in a tin foil hat!!

2019-11-30 01:55:38 +0000 UTCHey Mike! What’s the craic? First I just want to say I think your channel is hands-down the best on YouTube. So my question is this: there’s so many different theories about what really happened at Dyatlov Pass (psychedelics, KGB, weather, UFO...). What’s your best guess? Thanks!! Barb

2019-11-29 23:37:33 +0000 UTCMike if the NFL decided to put an expansion team in London would you as a Falcons fan support that team. Of your visits to the United States is there one city or town that you really like and if so why. Thanks

2019-11-29 21:49:51 +0000 UTCI asked this in the discord one time but lost track of whether Mike saw it or not, so I'll second that

2019-11-29 21:39:31 +0000 UTCI don't think this was asked during your last Q and A, but I may be wrong. How did you come up with the title, "That Chapter?"

2019-11-29 21:16:10 +0000 UTCI’m interested in knowing how you go about preparing for your videos as well. Do you have a team, duo, or solo? Do you use apps, google docs, or spreadsheets, to set up your notes? I’m just curious.

2019-11-29 20:18:54 +0000 UTCAwesome videos, as always. Now that your fan base has greatly expanded, How does your lovely fiancée feel about your ‘mainly’ female fans lusting over you in the comments. 2019-11-29 17:27:39 +0000 UTCMike, your videos especially in the last year are highly detailed using mostly the actual archival footage, what’s your process after selecting a topic? Do you have a team that helps with research, editing, etc. or do you carry the load yourself?
