The OP of that reddit post met up with a guy named Rick Klein, a Chicago television historian, and together they interviewed a number of engineers and technicians from the Chicago broadcast community. And the gist of those interviews was that it would have been effectively impossible for an amateur to have obtained the technology necessary to perform that broadcast at the time, which the J and K characters definitely were. Technically it would have been possible for the person who did it to have told J or K, but for a number of logical reasons it would've been extremely unlikely.
