Very interesting observation that there are no female observers. To be honest, I hadn't even given that a second thought. Perhaps that was a decision based on the cultural climate of the times. I'm guessing it was just a matter of tradition and seeing males as more threatening in general. If you remove the reproductive function of females... well... it's anybody's game. And of course, there's the whole "Men in Black" trope. Kinda' the same thing with the "Agents" in The Matrix. I will admit, the observers are great villains. Windmark and his admission of feeling "consumed" by the idea of eliminating the resistance is so indicative of a great crime show psychopathic compulsion.

I remember somewhere early on you making a comment that you were thinking the observers would somehow have a greater part in the later story. How very astute of you, milady. 😉 Such a reflective episode. I can't help but be taken back to 02x08 and the observer August. He was the one who abducted the young woman, Christine Hollis, so she wouldn't be killed in the ill fated flight to Rome, because he had inadvertently formed a bond with her when she was a child. He had felt compelled to protect her. There was that scene in the end when he was dying from a gunshot wound as he was being secretly driven away in the back seat of a car by September, who assured him she would be safe now because she had become "important." She was someone who had led to the death of one of them.

We’ve reached the episode with my favourite thing in the entirety of the season, Walter getting his og memories back, it’s something that adds so much to the season, to Walter’s journey and his relationship with Peter, i’m so glad they found a way to do it before the finale. That scene where Walter tells Peter is so beautiful and reminded me so much of Olivia when she was getting those memories back in season 4, that euphoria and unbridled happiness when they find out they had such a deep relationship/connection with someone and that knowledge changes them radically as we see with Walter in this episode, such a beautifully written and acted scene. And now we come to Donald and his many revelations, this scene is so incredibly packed with information but somehow (at least to me) it still doesn’t feel overwhelming and imo it’s mainly for two reasons, the first is just how it was made it takes its time and doesn’t bombard you with all of the info at once and instead has a couple of moments of pause where the characters can assimilate all they are hearing (which is a lot especially for Peter and Olivia), the second reason why it doesn’t feel too overwhelming is because it all makes sense within the context of the show and it doesn’t stray too far from what we know so even if it shocking to hear it’s still something we can easily wrap our head around. We finally have a clear idea of what the plan is and to say that it is ambitious would be a massive understatement 😅, they plan is to erase the observers existence from the timeline, it makes sense that they would need an observer to come up with it. And in this regard i wanted to make a little clarification because i know it can get confusing on this point, their plan is not to bring Michael to the observers that made him in that future controlled by them, instead they want to bring him to the human scientists that first discovered the ability to augment human intellect at the cost of suppressing emotions and show them they the are not mutually exclusive and can actually coexist as physically demonstrated by Michael, i just wanted to make that clear because in this episode we see the future the observers come from so it’s easy to assume that’s the one they plan to send Michael to but it isn’t, sorry if the extra explanation felt redundant but i just wanted to make sure 😊. Speaking of that future that we do see in this episode boy it syre is grim, a bunch of “people” who all look the same walking around in enormous glass domes because the world outside is inhabitable, certainly makes you think… We also get an explanation as to why they all look the same and why there are no female observers, they don’t “need” them because they are bred in labs, now that i think about it i guess we don’t even know if they have the concept of male and female amongst observers, maybe they have “evolved” past that too. Also loved the conversation we see between Windmark (😜) and his superior because it shows us that no matter how advanced they may be they still feel emotions when strong enough and he is certainly feeling something 😂. Peter and Olivia once again break my heart in this one (what a surprise), Olivia’s face when she is learning about the plan is phenomenal, you can see every emotion displayed on it and then she gives you confirmation of them when she talks to Peter and i love the two sides presented here, on one side you have Olivia who has reclaimed hope due to everything she has gone through this season and now fully believes they are going to get Etta back and on the other side Peter who has not gone through that journey and is afraid to commit himself to that hope in fear of getting burned once again. Then another twist gets introduced in the conversation between Donald and Walter, the latter is going to (seemingly) have to sacrifice himself for the full plan to succeed and i love Walter’s reaction here because now that he has all of this new memories he feels so much more scared of losing his life than before because he is so much more aware of what he is leaving behind and Donald sees this and being up the white tulip, god i love this show and its ability to bring back things not as cheap easter eggs but as reminders of the journey so far both for the show and the characters and what better totem for that than the white tulip, the ultimate symbol of Walter’s redemption journey 🥰. Michael’s decision at the end has to have a deeper plan since we learn in this episode the he is even smarter that the observers so i’m assuming he can also predict futures and calculate probabilities so he probably did that and made the choice with the most upside for the group and their mission. I loved your post episode discussion for this ep and you raised a very valid concern with the possible reset of the timeline and erasure of the observer invasion, obviously it’s not something that i can discuss right now because i risk heavy spoiler but i just wanted to touch on it because it’s definitely a conversation we will have post finale. Ok i think this time i’ve officially rambled for too long, we are getting in the first part of the finale today and i can’t wait, still so many twists and turns to come in this last two eps. P.S. Thank you for taking my suggestions for post series reactions, i really think they are going to enhance your experience of the show and give you a lot more closure. P.S.S. In the scene where Walter and Donald have their private conversation you can see Donald take out a thick book with some observer writing on it, that book is called September’s notebook and it’s something that you can actually buy online! It’s a book that contains his observations of the fringe team throughout the years/seasons and it’s one of the most well made collectible items for any tv show, i highly highly recommend it for any Fringe fan.
