Fringe Reaction 2x13

Please use one of the links at the bottom of this post to watch this video, thank you:

Hello All!

Did Olivia just give Peter the heart eyes? Is this just a drill? No need to get alarmed right??? Man I hope that was a turning point for them! Seeing Peter sick was awful and seeing Walter shake with fear over it all was worse!

Much love

Dakara x

I love that I have found another person that loves this show as much as I do. I have so much love in my heart for these characters, especially Walter, but Peter, Astrid, Olivia, and Boyles are all up there with that love. Love. Such an incredible show and the last time I watched it was when it first came out so it kind of feels like I'm watching it for the first time. Even though there are a lot of things I do remember, there's so much that I don't. And then of course watching it through your eyes and seeing it for the first time is just so exciting for me.

I just wanted to add a science note about the basis of the episode. When this show was created, we were just beginning to understand behavioral manipulation by pathogens and how common it is in humans. The effects of the rabies virus have been known for thousands of years. Rabies causes hyperactivity and aggression in mammals, increasing the likelihood of biting and transmitting the virus. As Walter mentions, hydrophobia (fear of water) is another symptomatic change, generating anxiety and a physical reaction to water, which makes it hard to swallow liquids. The links between neurochemical changes and pathogens began to be understood in the 1950s and 1960s. By the 1970s, we started to grasp the effect of Toxoplasma on rodents, which removes their fear to ensure propagation to cats. However, it wasn’t until the mid-2000s that we began to understand Toxoplasma’s effects on humans, including increased risk-taking and, in more extreme cases, links to schizophrenia. This discovery helped drive research into behavioral manipulation by various types of organisms. It was only after this show aired that we learned about connections between gut bacteria and cognitive changes, such as cravings and mood alterations. Since then, numerous links have been discovered between pathogens and behavior modification--sometimes even zombification. Fatigue, depression, and specific food preferences have been found to be fairly common results of manipulation or influence by bacteria or viruses in our systems. This show was definitely drawing from the cutting edge of scientific understanding, often being prescient. *The Walking Dead* also tapped into emerging science, as we have since documented parasites that take over hosts--such as ants--turning them into zombies to perform specific tasks for the parasite.
