Hello All!

Spike making me all emotional with his words damnit! James strikes again. I really enjoyed this episode a lot. Enjoyed the honesty, the openness to discussion, the willingness to be vulnerable - it was all so great.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 7x08

Comments

I think the conscious part of Spike's brain has to be aware of the intent to do violent actions in order for the chip to be set off. Since the big bad is somehow controlling him subconsciously, the chip isn't activated.

StephanieB

It's been 20 years and I still have no idea why Spike's chip doesn't go off while he's under the influence of the big bad! 🥴

Dak: Trolls. Utter trolls. LOL Trolls indeed. The last episode and this one are part of why I love this season so much. Fabulous reaction, Dak, to both episodes, two of which are a couple of my favorites for the whole series. Favorites, in a long list of top tier eps. Super excited, and can't wait to watch the rest of this season with one of my favorite reactors. :D

Raven Dark

This is an amazing comment and I'm gonna check out a couple of bands off your list as I've never heard of them before. Exciting!!! The Bronze had certainly a pretty identifiable type of sound but IMO so awesome and very fitting! I'm obviously biased ;) Every decade has those though. This is what makes "old people" (oh gods, I'm now one of them...) say stuff like "all new music sounds the same, music was so much better when I was younger" lol I've read that we stop listening to new music in our early 30s. Everything we discover later in life is apparently an echo of already preestablished musical taste, set in adolescence. BTW I was gonna be offended on behalf of Morcheeba in that comment about significant careers but I've realised that they never actually performed in Bronze. Oops.

DB

Took a couple of reactions off comment-wise due to health things, but wanted to bring back a bit of normalcy to myself. The comments here said a lot of what I was going to say, but I loved the bits about Aimee Man and the music from several people so I'll concentrate on that stuff. You had said that a lot of the female singers in the show had a similar style and delivery and you're right. In the late '90s and early '00s there was definitely a trend of a whispy, ethereal singing style that was quite popular. It's pretty much the perfect chill sound that lets you just feel kind of emotional and introspective. There was a singer, Jill Sobule, that I really liked, even though it wasn't at all my preferred music genre. She was a bit before this era, with her first album coming out in 1990 and subsequent releases coming every year or three, with her last one being in 2018. I remember really liking her voice and her music video "I Kissed a Girl". I was lucky enough to see her live back in the mid-to-late '90s in Chicago. She had a similar quality, but also threw in some jangly pop stuff. She would have been a cool one to have in the series. If you saw the movie Clueless (1995) you heard her song "Supermodel" on the soundtrack. That being said, the best song on that soundtrack for me was "Kids in America" by The Muffs (a cover of the 1981 hit by Kim Wilde), but I was a huge fan of them anyway. Music has been such a big part of Buffy and I loved seeing all the bands playing at The Bronze. In a reply to another comment that mentions Michelle Branch and Aimee Mann being the ones with the most significant careers, I added that I thought The Breeders needed a special mention. I thought they were a great band, despite getting sick of their "Cannonball" music video being on nonstop rotation on MTV (as I mentioned in my comment to the 7x06 reaction). Plus, they were founded by Kim Deal of the Pixies and Tanya Donelly of Throwing Muses! (if you haven't heard either band, they're definitely worth checking out) I had to laugh at the Billy Idol reference regarding Spike. When I'm watching older reactions to catch up to the current ones I never comment. However, there was an old episode that had Spike flashbacks and in the '70s he looked like a Billy Idol knockoff, so I had to break my rule and mention it. As someone said above, I bet Billy got his look from Spike. Speaking of Billy Idol, anyone else prefer his work with '70s punk band Generation X to his solo career later on? You can definitely hear the same-ish style, but it's just so much better to me. I own zero Billy Idol records, but I own all the Gen X ones. I think everyone should at least own their first, self-titled album from 1978. "One Hundred Punks", "Ready Steady Go", "Kiss Me Deadly", etc. Oof, so great. Just for the helluva it, here are some of my favorite all female or at least female-fronted bands in no particular order except for the first one: The Avengers - my absolute favorite and my collection is absurdly large L7 (❤️Jennifer) Lunachicks (❤️Squid) Hole (R.I.P. Kristen) The Muffs (R.I.P. Kim) X-Ray Spex (R.I.P. Poly Styrene) The Gits (R.I.P. Mia) The Slits (R.I.P. Ari-Up - stepdaughter of John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten) The Distillers (Brody, the singer, is married to Tim Armstrong of Rancid) The Devotchkas (Stephanie, the singer, is a friend of mine) Grit (Irish band, Clodagh is one of the lead singers; she is also in Easpa Measa and Burnchurch) The Dishrags (Canadian band, opened for The Avengers in 1979 twice) Siouxsie and the Banshees Slant 6 The Red Aunts Bikini Kill One last thought: the previous episode, 7x07, was one of the best Buffy episodes in the whole series; top ten, if not top five. It was an emotional roller coaster, to borrow an overused phrase. It hits your soul. Thank you Dak, I'm looking forward to the next episode! Bye for now!

Brian Dworak

You'd probably be more familiar with her band 'Til Tuesday as they had a top ten hit in 1985 with "Voices Carry". She went solo in the '90s. I'm pretty sure I saw 'Til Tuesday play in the mid '80s, maybe with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.

Brian Dworak

I was going to mention Aimee Mann, but others, probably much better acquainted with her than I am, already covered that. I really liked how invested you were in trying to figure out what the heck was going on with Spike. More frivolously, I was amused by how invested you were in Spike's hip, and, subsequently, his cheekbones. (Incidentally, Robson was probably British, but the actor playing him, Rob Nagle, was not.)

Koz

I think the burying is more ceremonial for vampires it isn't needed but more of a traditional thing. Aimee Mann was the singer and while I don't know much about her myself as she wasn't big in the UK I believe she was well known in the US and it was a big thing for her to appear on the show.

Collinson

Great watching with you as always! Maybe it's a weird thing to praise someone for, but I appreciate the professional off-mike cough. I still have flashbacks of a reactor who frequently coughed without even covering their mouth. Get well soon if you're feeling under the weather :-)

Apetass

I could almost see the wisps of steam coming out of your ears at the end of the episode 😂. The cringe was coming off the screen in waves when Anya was awkwardly coming on to Spike. The bouncer making the comparison of Spike to Billy Idol was right on the nose. James and Billy could be distant relatives. I like how they are showing how the guilt is affecting Spike. All of those years of killing and torture is going to weigh heavily on him. I did find it odd that Spike would jump to the conclusion that Buffy was jealous he was chatting up another woman. Though to be fair, everyone else did too. Buffy might have residual feelings for Spike but it didn't make sense to me that everyone was jumping on the "Buffy wants Spike around because she's in love with him" bandwagon. Look forward to what's next, always appreciate when you pick one of my comments at the end.

Gabe Morales

I dont think she was ever very famous in the uk to be fair. I've never heard of her :/ but I do like her songs in this episode

Your look towards the camera at the end there Dakara, Perfect. Trolls indeed. Im sure Giles is dead now.... right. James Marsters is acting the crap out of this episode. He's soo good, and his chemistry with Sarah is amazing. Just think back now to season 2 when he entered the show. Ever thought he'd stick around so long? I like how this episode builds directly on the previous one. It really starts to give us more and more threads of the carpet that is this season. This thing messing with all of them, but now that its come out, its been messing with spike from the start. Its that point of realization for buffy that I think ties it together. Where she realizes the thing that messed with them for one night and fcked them up, has been messing with spike for ages. I also love Anya's point about telling the truth all the time when she was evil. Like the truth hurts so often so why bother lying. Who knows what the thing said was true and what wasn't. thats the rough part. The part with Dawn and Joyce that always trips me up is that Joyce was shown so differently than the rest of em where. But then again, wouldnt that be a great bit of misleading to do as an evil thing. As always, lookin forward to the rest :).

Bart Aansorgh

I admit it's making me a bit sad nobody recognises Aimee Mann. I like to think it's only a generational thing lol (although anyone who watched I'll Be Gone in the Dark in the past few years would be curious about her, right?). And Magnolia soundtrack is still one of the best out there <3 I'm still bitter it lost the Oscar to freaking Tarzan (sorry Phil Collins lol)

DB

Apart from Michelle Branch, Aimee Mann is only other musical guest that had a significant music career. Also the only musical guest with a speaking part. "I hate playing vampire towns" 🙂

Matthew

Pedro Pascal wasn't buried either before turning

Matthew

Aimee Mann playing at the Bronze BTW!

Matt

You don't have to bury vampires first. When Kralik turned the helper in Helpless he just left him till he could help him escape.

Bud Haven

Also when spike pulls that lady from the queue for the club. You said "that didnt take long." If he came up and hit on me I'd probably go anywhere with him instantly XD

x_Rhi_x

Great episode. I think Dawn wasn't completely honest about what "joyce" said because she doesn't wanna fully believe it herself. Or maybe saying out loud would also validate her fear and she's ashamed to admit that she thinks it might be true, which would undoubtedly upset buffy, because buffy would never not be there for dawn.
