Hello All!

I got emotional in this one, nothing new there, I know but I've wanted more Buffy/Willow heart to heart scenes and now I got it - hit me right in the feels. James is brilliant yet again when exploring Spike's struggles. Willow was so scared of returning she made herself invisible!! Anya was great in this episode, nice to see her open up a little more too.

Hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 7x03

Comments

While Spike scene in the basement is outstanding, my no.1 choice would be: B: "It's gonna be OK, Will. You are gonna be OK." W: "I know. You are here." Doesn't matter how many times I've seen this ep/scene, Willow's answer always hits straight into my heart. And then, there is the last scene...

After watching this episode multiple times, I just noticed during the locator spell with Anya, you can see Willow and her reflection in a mirror- two Willows, the one who is there (with Anya) and the one who isn't (invisible to Buffy, Xander and Dawn). Or, the two sides of Willow, light and dark. She is trying to reconcile her two halves, as are her friends. The scene with Spike in the basement is *chef's kiss*, everytime I see it I am amazed all over again. Fantastic direction.

The reconnection of Willow and Buffy is my highlight of this whole dang episode. And, really, with Buffy and Xander both, like when Willow learns that her friends haven't abandoned her, even though she still can't see them. And the end, with Buffy offering her own energy to help Will, is the capper. Gnarl is the latest in a line of disturbing looking Boogeyman-type creatures to fight Buffy (Der Kindestod, The Gentleman) but this one has more unpleasant-to-watch behavior. I don't WANT to think about strips of skin. But I do like how moved you were by the Buffy and Willow love.

Koz

Gnarl, The Gentlemen and Der Kindestod top three creepy Buffy monsters. All got a similar MO as well having you lay there helpless as they murder you.

Matt

Gnarl is easily one of the best/creepiest and well made demons of the entire series.

Julian Welton

I love this episode. Gnarl is the creepiest demon we've seen (imo) second only to the Gentlemen in "Hush". Apart from all the cool action, I really enjoyed Anya throughout the episode and Dawn when she was paralyzed. I'm glad that Willow is back and everyone was happy to see her, although they had doubts. It's gonna be sad when you watch the series finale because I've loved your reactions. Thanks Dak!

Button, button, who's got the button? Is an old children's game that dates back to at least 1871. Not sure about the UK, but it was still being played in school yards in Australia in the 1970s, along with other Victorian era games like Oranges and Lemons. You form a circle, close your eyes and hold out your hands; then someone drops a pebble, or a coin, or a button into one persons hand. When you open your eyes you all have your hands closed and you have to guess who has the 'button' by chanting, 'button, button, who's got the button, my money's on' - then the name of the person you think has it.

Claire Eyles

Gnarl is played by Camden Toy. He also played one of the Gentleman alongside Doug Jones in Hush. Playing a character in full prosthetic makeup like that is a hugely underrated skill.

One of my absolute favorite episodes of the series and I love Gnarl so much!! He reminds me of Rumple from Once Upon A Time!

Re: everything Spike saying in his mad rambling actually meaning something— 100% agree. If I had the spoons, I’d go through this season and write out my thoughts on every line, haha! Tbh, I’d be surprised if there isn’t an actual academic breakdown out there already , and if there is I’d love to read it. But I feel I understand more of what he’s saying every time the same way I do when I read complex poetry. Fitting, that, isn’t it?

I love this episode SO much. It's brilliantly written and acted, and I love that they addressed this aspect of Willow's arc. I also loved how darkly hilarious this is. Paralyzed Dawn's physical comedy is some of the funniest scenes of the season. Plus, Gnarl is, hands down, one of the best demons they've ever had. I still, to this day, call things gifties since I first saw this episode in 2002. I knew you'd love this emotional return, Dakara! Great reaction!

This episode is so good. Your reaction to it is wonderful, Dak. That scene with spike and Willow, and then later adding Buffy and Xander, is just fantastic. The acting is brilliant, and every time they repeat the scene with Buffy and Xander, I get full body chills. Love it so much.

Raven Dark

I Love this episode. And i know he's gross and disgusting, but I absolutely love Gnarl as a demon. Hes just the perfect amount of creepy and gross, that makes you go ueghh, but you can't look away. With the playful echoing voice and all. I just love that kind of creepy in my shows. Spike so far this season is great to me. I love how James portrais it. It always makes you wonder whats goin on in his head, and what things he might be seeing. Or if it all is in his head. Dawn is giving me a bit of Willow vibes here btw. Like the reasearchy Willow vibes that she had in S1 and 2. Then the Willow invisible bit. I think its a briliant way to continue the thread of the previous episode, where Willow said at the end that she didn't feel ready. And it wasn't until she actually realized that she wouldn't be abandoned that she allowed them to see her, and her to see them. Anya again has some briliant crass lines that are just perfectly her, and I'm glad that the character development is there that she didn't just became a vengeance demon again and thats that, but that she's changed. Even beeing a vengeance demon isn't the same anymore. Lookin forward to the next one :)
