Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 6x09

Comments

Your face was absolutely priceless lol! Enough said on that. My only other comment is that I think the "This changes everything" line from Spike is based on the fact that he doesn't feel like he's on equal footing with Buffy. He feels like he's been neutered, powerless, and he thinks that's why Buffy doesn't respect him. So in Spikes twisted view this makes them equals again. Not to mention Spike, and vampires in general, have always mixed violence with pleasure. We've seen it with Spike and Drusilla as well as Angelus and Darla in the past.

This was the first episode of Buffy that I ever watched 😅 and it was an extremely memorable experience with that ending!

This is a minor point, probably, but I don't love the way magic is utilized in this episode. Drastic manipulations of reality, people being transported and switched with other people, mesmerization of someone with a glance, and more, and it's done with nothing more involved than a snap of the fingers. It's something like Bewitched. And that would be fine, if this were Bewitched, but it ain't. But a lot of folks might not be talking about that when they're all wrapped up in Buffy and Spike having demolition sex.

Koz

Having never watched with subtitles and missing the 'zip' sound all of these years, that (zipper unzipping) subtitle is jarring.

Steven

Yep, that's certainly an ending to an episode. I think you're right about the spike and buffy part, he's her great escape. It's a weird dynamic and probably not healthy. Also, Amy is back!. Hooray?. WIlow finaly succeeded in turning her back, but it happens as willow is getting more and more addicted to magic. Now amy is a companion that will likely boost that drive to do magic more, so what will that turn into. The "trio" is kinda funny in their exploits, but still quite a background thing. Overall this relationship build on the issues in the relationships, but nothing much happened outside of that. We'll see were this goes, and enjoy the ride. Looks like buffy did :D.

Making my way through original Who at the moment, as a lover of New Who (which was heavily inspired by Buffy, might be a good future show for Dak). I'm up to 1977 so far. Funny that in an episode called 'Smashed' with an intentional double entendre of addiction and violence, didn't also make it a triple entendre with death by smashing the frozen guy.

Ed Green

I have it on good authority, that was a stunt house. You can relax knowing that no houses were harmed in the making of this episode.

What a coincidence that Buffy had French braids and so did Dak! Anyone else keep going back and forth looking at both their braids in certain scenes? Dak won, but Buffy was a close second. I have been wondering about all the dated references in the series and am curious as to how many people watching the reactions today get them. The Jessica Fletcher one was probably not one many younger people would get, but the Ellen one they would, seeing as Ellen was, until fairly recently, still in the limelight. Honestly I forgot about Amy, and when she came back nude, I though for a second that Willow was smiling for a different reason. It's good to have her back. The reuniting scene with Buffy felt awkward and it was strange how Amy just got back to normal, eating cookies and watching TV. It's too bad Willow didn't at least let rat Amy watch TV and maybe let her eat something other than cheese. When I saw that the Geek Squad was back, I sighed a little, but I enjoyed that storyline based solely on their banter. My favorite being the "Size is everything. Sorry..." bit. Also, that was not a mint 1979 Boba Fett. I had the figures and vehicles back then. Did you know that an incredibly rare prototype sold for over $200k last year? Crazy. It's frustrating when there are scenes that are emotional and touching, but they're so short. The scene between Tara and Dawn is one of those. I just wanted to hug Tara for what she said to Dawn. We love Dawn too, Tara. 💕 One of the funniest scenes has to be the one at The Bronze (I think it was there). My question is how did nobody notice magic pool with no cues? The magical lesbian hookup was uncomfortable because we all knew that Willow wouldn't want something so shallow and meaningless and in general is not someone that would be comfortable with hookups (imo). Creeps dancing in cages was the best part for me. Once again, Buffy initiates the kiss! *zipper unzips* Um. 😳 I hope you were watching the US version Dak, because the UK version cut out a bit from this scene. It was pretty graphic even without any nudity. It made me think back to your comment, "Grunt work. I can't with this show". I laughed at your first comment in your review: "I feel tainted. I feel dirty. I felt as though I shouldn't be watching that but my eyes could not look away. One, I felt hot, two..." etc. 😆 Some random thoughts: I love Anya too, Dak. I was also hoping that frozen Rusty would fall and smash because I knew you'd make a comment about it being a "smashing episode". Dang it. Remember thick laptops? I was first introduced to computers in 8th grade (1982-83) and have been online since early 1995. I remember one of the first computer games I bought and thinking that the 43 megabyte installation would fill the hard drive 😄.I'm sitting here now with my new 10 terabyte external hard drive feeling like I'm in Star Trek. References to both original Doctor Who and Red Dwarf was the cherry on top. For those of you who don't know (🙄), I love original Doctor Who and have done for over 40 years, "You notice how it's been getting dark so much earlier these days?" More than you know Willow, er, Dawnie. Thanks Dak, another great one. See you soon.

YES. I have real world experience with this these last 5 months. My mother, who is in her 70s, lost her husband (my stepfather) in October 2022. At night they would watch mainly British detective/police shows. Since then I have been going there and watching with her in the evening. The problem is she needs subtitles because she sometimes doesn't understand a word or two. I keep glancing down automatically and I really dislike it. I started to do the same while watching Dak's reactions this past month. Then I noticed Dak doing the same. Sometimes I'll watch her for 20 seconds or so and her eyes go down, glance back and forth and then look back up. It's pretty entertaining because now I know what I look like. I'm sure there's a reason for the subtitles, but I'm at a loss. Maybe a new poll?

Brian Dworak

Anyone else hate how the subtitles spoil lines? Dakara sees them before the characters actually deliver them.

James MacDonald

I saw an interview with James Marsters was asked about that scene , something along the lines of 'how did you get that past the standards and practices department.' His answer was more or less "New show, new network, no one was paying attention" AND that scene was shortened to trim the show length to fit the time slot, I'll leave to you to go or not go to Youtube and watch the full length version 'cause it is there 😉

Welcome to UPN lmao

Kate

Haha love the reaction to the end scene! Indeed it is very 🔥 but in reality that relationship is bbbaadd news. It can still be hot though hehe

I hit send before I meant to, so I'll just add, you have nothing to be nervous about. Your reactions are wonderful, Dak, and this one is no exception. Your reaction to the ending scene. Comedy gold.

Raven Dark

Someone probably already pointed this out on your reaction to episode 8 of this season, but I don't have time to check, so just in case... In addition to Spike's suit in episode 8, remember this exchange in Restless?: Xander: Always gotta be moving forward. Buffy: Like a shark. Xander: Like a shark. With feet. And much less fins. Spike: And on land. In episode 8, one of the villains was a shark. With feet, And much less fins. And on land. Also, he was collecting on a debt of Spike's. He was a loan shark. Get it?

Raven Dark

Yes this episode is full of questionable actions but I just want to highlight the best character Tara. She has no reason to still be apart of Dawn's life. No family obligations or anything but she still wanted to make sure dawn knew that she was still there for her. This is great especially since dawn is feeling abandoned by everyone. Willow and buffy are definitely parallel as they are both using something outside of themselves to deal or not deal in this case with the pain they are feeling. Willow after oz was a mess but here she seems to not be as effected by the break up and even suggested things aren't as bad as they seem because she is using magic to sort of distract herself from reality. Now people are constantly surprised when spike goes back to his violent ways when he thinks the chip doesn't work but constantly the writers have to make the viewers realize that chip doesn't equal having a soul. Spike can't be his vampire self because something physically holding him back. He does good not because he wants to do good but because he can't do bad. his other desires from being William have a chance to come out and being loved is important to that side of himself. What set spike off was when buffy called him a thing. Remember that she used to treat him like a man and that gave him the desire to act more like a man but now since she treats him like a vampire again he has decided to act like a vampire again. Being toxic and making her feel like she is just as bad as him in return showing that they are both being very toxic. The house smashing down sort of symbolizes the destruction those kind of relationships cause. Yes they are passionate but its not good. Both buffy and willow are spiralling.
