Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 6x04

Please use one of the links at the bottom of this post to watch this video, thank you:

Hello All!

It was interesting to see them talk about real life troubles & finances in this episode, quite refreshing. Also sad to see Buffy struggle with it all at the same time. It's like that extra reminder that she's 'back to reality'. Willow is scaring me! That scene between her and Giles had me quaking! Buffy is off to meet Angel!! Lets hope it goes well...

Hope you enjoy the reaction folks. Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reaction 6x04

Comments

It seems similar to recovering drug addicts or individuals in long term high stress fields of work like race car drivers, military members deployed to war, law enforcement interactions and things like that. Your body adjusts and adapts to what for many are extreme conditions. Your body adjusts and adapts so that these extreme feelings and conditions feel normal because frankly you would die. You cannot be in flight or fight mode 24/7, constantly overproduce testosterone, or spend hours flooding your body with adrenaline, it would literally kill you. So these responses require more and more escalating extremes to trigger, which is helpful because it allows you to think straight and react in high stress situations. The side effect is that the normal and mundane things that could even border on extreme for many, they might as well not even happen as far as your bodies chemical and psychological response. If a bomb near you for example isn't going to trigger you then why would a surprise birthday party or visit? It wouldn't. I went through a similar thing coming home from Afghanistan, everything by comparison is so bland, safe, and mundane after 6 months of fighting for my life and the life of those serving with me, confronting situations that might be my last and evading death on a daily basis. Even when I consciously wanted to be excited and happy, I just couldn't. Buffy was at peace. In something akin to heaven. Everything else she feels while being alive is going to be so insignificant and dull even if she consciously knows it should be more. There simply isn't a comparison to what she experiences now and she had adjusted too much and too long to a different environment to go back to normal. She might even be chemically and psychologically in a physical manner incapable like I mentioned above until her body has time to adjust again even if she consciously wants to. There is a disconnect between her mind, body, conscious and subconscious.

So at this point we've seen Buffy experiencing what's called psychomotor retardation (the scene at the kitchen sink where she appears to be kind of stuck and slow to respond), emotional blunting (not being able to express a full range of emotions, as Willow noted), anhedonia (Giles is back and apart from the initial hug Buffy doesn't seem to be able to find a lot of enjoyment in that), emotional withdrawal (she pulls away from even someone like Giles when he tries to offer comfort), and by her own admission she's experiencing sleep disturbance. All of these are symptoms of clinical depression. One of the reasons I love this season so much, is this was the first time I had ever seen something like depression actually portrayed realistically on screen. Prior to Buffy Season 6 TV shows tended to deal with this sort of subject matter by doing 'episodes of the week', or 'a very special episode of...'. Characters were shown almost randomly dealing with mental health issues, some sort of deep and meaningful typically happened at some point, and by the end of the episode (2 episodes if you were lucky) it had either all been resolved, or the character had at least reached out for help, and they all lived happily ever after. Some shows would at least drop a few lines of dialogue later in a season to let you know how 'generic mental illness character' was doing, but Buffy did something completely different for the time, they actually decided to go all in with depicting something like clinical depression in a way that was realistic, and that, at least so far, wasn't just going to be fixed with a 1 or 2 episode kumbya moment.

It is so dumb the bank wouldn't help Buffy. At worst, she has no credit, not bad credit, and using the house as collateral isn't the only thing the bank can do to get their money. First, lenders know they will not collect all the loans they make and they have reserves specifically for this. Second, they get to write off the loan as a tax deduction. Thirdly, on top of writing off the loan, they can still pursue the debt through perhaps more manageable arrangements even while writing off said debt or they can sell it off to a third party collection agency. So, if the bank has $8,000 worth of loans default, it writes off the entire amount of $8,000 and takes an additional $3,000 as an expense while then selling the debts for potentially 70% of the original loan to third parties, or working out a deal with the original borrowers to continue paying or pay a smaller percentage even though they already got $11,000 for that $8,000. Don't let the game game you Buffy. She is what 19 or 20? Credit and debt outside of student loans falls off after 7 years. Young enough to tell lenders to go shove it. Put the house in someone elses name, like Giles, borrow as much as you can get, invest it, and make a bunch of money and before she turns 30 her credit will be back to normal and debts will have fallen off. As long as no single loan/credit is too high, it will cost more for the company to try to take her to court than to just write it off and sell it of which they will make more anyways. The system is rigged, but you don't have to play their stupid games.

Willow was very, I don’t want to say out of character, but that spell to bring Buffy back really boosted her confidence to arrogant levels. Even if Giles wasn’t very tactful in his delivery, he was right. It’s like when someone achieves something they never thought they could and it goes straight to their head. It was very disconcerting to see Willow threaten Giles to not piss her off. She does have enormous power and needs to be careful

One of my least liked episodes, but there are scenes I really enjoy. Interestingly they mostly involve Dawn. The opening is funny and I think her scream when the water hits her was real. Her research scene was very funny, particularly the horn comment. The Anya scenes are always entertaining too. I thought you were going to burst into tears when Giles showed up. I'm glad he talked with Buffy about figuring out the bills, etc. Even though Buffy is an adult at this point, she doesn't know much about being an adult and all the responsibilities that come with it. Giles has always been a father figure to Buffy and I could almost feel the sense of relief she had with him just being there. It was nice seeing the geek squad, but a little goes a long way for me. The MOTW was bland and forgettable in my opinion, though that wasn't the focus of the episode so it really doesn't matter. It just felt like Whedon decided to throw characters all over the episode to make it good. A cup of Giles, a sprinkle of Spike, and three dashes of dork. It was fun at times, but it felt forced in a way. If I rewatch it in future, which I probably would because it would bother me if I didn't watch all the episodes, I would just watch your full reaction again, which was very enjoyable. I both liked and disliked the scene between Giles and Willow. He was right in what he said, but the delivery was indelicate. Willow's response was way too threatening and dark. Very dark, Willow. Shame on you. Thank you Dak!

I have always assumed that Tara and Willow are using the money they would be using for their room at college to rent from Buffy. I'm sure they pitch in for groceries and things like that as well. It's never mentioned, but it would make sense with how Buffy is struggling financially, but not getting the house taken away.

A mook is a stupid person, basically. (It's a word attributed to Cantonese that migrated westward through Hong Kong cinema, apparently.) I like how much of a laugh you got from Johnathan, Warren and the heretofore unseen Andrew. And I really like how touched you were by the return of Giles. ... Real world type stuff is often pushed to the side in fantasy shows, and that is what Buffy is, but being set in the modern day (at the time) world makes it easier to wonder how all the practical matters of life are dealt with whilst battling monsters and sorcery and the undead. Certain things come up if you give these matters more and more thought. (Like, who's paying for Tara's college tuition?) I agree; it seems like others, such as Willow, could be doing more. Anyway, very well done. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I love Xander and find myself defending a lot of his jackassary (is that a word?) to the hilt, but this is one of the few things where I cannot see his side of things at all. HE proposed to Anya, and ok I get it, he is scared of the situation as its a big step, but at the end of the day, you shouldn't be throwing out proposals willy nilly if you have doubts of that magnitude. It's somewhat of a 90's writing trope that was used a lot in Friends and other popular shows at the time the whole HAHA look at the man afraid of commitment, isnt he funny. I know this was technically early 2000's but its a bit of a hang over from that I wager. It goes along with Xander's past story lines what with him having a, lets say, less than functional family life with his parents, and its believable that he would propose then be a bit jittery, but I am fully with Anya on this one, shit or get off the pot Xander.

I like this episode. Willow's talk with Giles always gives me goosebumps. She really is completely disregarding the possible consequences of our actions here. It's interesting that you mention in your post episode talk about Willow doing more to help Buffy...because I did always wonder. I know Willow and Tara are just students, but they are living in Buffy's house, presumably rent free and have been for months, I know that was rendered somewhat necessary due the need to take care of Dawn while Buffy was gone, as she needed an adult in the house, but still, you'd think they would offer to chip in somewhat, either get part time jobs or use some of their presumed student loans to pay Buffy for the accomodation, they are living in her house at the end of the day, and it shouldn't be on Buffy to pay for everyones living expenses when Willow and Tara are living there too.

The scarest moment this episode is willow talking back to Giles. It's so unlike her but again if you go back to willow's deep insecurities about herself and feeling like people see her new self as just hiding her true weak self Giles calling her an amateur hit the fear right on its head and made her lash out but in true willow fashion she tries to avoid conflict. She does the same when buffy starts to get annoyed with her as well. Xander is the heart of the Scoobies for a reason. He lets his emotions control him more then anyone else in the group. That is sometimes good and sometimes bad. He wanted to marry Anya when he proposed because he felt it was right in that moment because he does love her but that doesn't mean he was thinking about all the small intricacies leading up to being married like he says this episode. Telling people makes it real and that terrifies him. So he tries to slow things down so he can get over this fear before telling people. He like buffy is hiding things to make people happy.
