Buffy The Vampire Slayer 5x06

Please use one of the links at the bottom of this post to watch this video, thank you:

Hello All!

Tara focused episode and I loved it! I was sweating thinking Tara was hiding some big evil & oh my days, I am SO relieved! I cant stand her family being so controlling & manipulative plus just generally so judgmental & closeminded. I'm hoping now Tara can spread her wings & be the person she wants to be. Spike's love is growing by the day for Buffy & he just can't help but look out for her & the scoobies at this point. He hates himself for it it seems haha.

Have a lovely week everyone! Thank you for the constant love & support!

Much love

Dakara x

Buffy The Vampire Slayer 5x06

Comments

I’m sorry. I really enjoy your reactions and I know this is not “constructive criticism” since you have long since finished the show, but I just have to say it. At this stage, when in my opinion BtVS begins its ascent into greatness, I am really looking forward to your reactions, but, I’ll admit, I almost want to skip over the next episodes until Riley is out of it, because I know I’ll have to hear you gripe every time he’s on screen. (I won’t skip them. They are too crucial and your reaction to the rest of it, I know will be worth it.) But the fact that you don’t “ship them” or feel that there’s chemistry between them – I get it. Joss Whedon says that it was a good thing, in many ways, for Angel to be gone. That way they could explore a lot more stuff for Buffy. And, one, was for her to have a normal (graded on a curve) boyfriend – in the interim, between vampires. I don’t “ship” Riley and Buffy either but I understand that the exploration of how Buffy reacts to a comparatively normal guy (at least not a dark guy, until he feels like it’s a competition) is a great plot device, and character device. And it sets us up perfectly for the Spike thing. I’m not as interested in chemistry as I am in story-telling. I think Riley serves the story wonderfully. You say, “If you’re not happy with her, Riley… then, goodbye.” But you wouldn’t say that about anyone else. I doubt you would say that in real life. It would be cruel. Love is like that. It’s hard to adjust to what Riley recognized, that he loves her and she doesn’t love him. She said, in a recent episode that she had opened up to him in ways she never had with anyone else, but that isn’t true, not from anything we’ve seen. (In this episode, Willow says that she trusted Tara more than anyone in her life. That we have *seen*.) Buffy opened up much more to Angel. She opens up more to Spike, later. Buffy did not love Riley. She wanted something comfy. She loved the idea of her and Riley. This was made obvious as far back as early season four, when she asks Willow, “Where do you think I get that from?” (the need that her boyfriend be dark), the second after she’s staked a vampire. The signs were there from the beginning. You seem to think that Riley is a whiner. He has only very recently become a whiner to Buffy. We see his disappointment. Buffy generally hasn’t. But things have changed in the last couple of episodes. He’s trying to get by without his government-infused super-strength. It’s an adjustment. I’m just wishing I didn’t have to cringe every time he’s on screen, when I watch your reactions. Maybe now that I’ve written out my rant, gotten it off my chest, I’ll have an actual sense of humor about it. All this said, I do love your reactions, 99.3% of the time. Good analysis of the Buffy-Xander conversation about Tara. I’ve never quite seen it that way before. Looking forward to watching it the next time, just so I can. And since spoilers are not a problem, one of my favorite moments at the end – yes, it touches my heart but, also: TARA: “Every time I – even when I'm at my worst ... you always make me feel special. How do you do that?” WILLOW: “Magic.” Dark foreshadowing much?

Todd Bolton

yes! I felt so much better once someone pointed that out because it was killing me not knowing haha

Oh hey! Tara's brother was Malcom from Lucifer, right?

Thankfully, when they do finally kiss, it's a great moment & super sweet.

This is a beautiful episode. It starts to fill in all these details about Tara and her insecurities and secrets that have been only hinted at until now. One of many highlights is when Willow asks Tara if she wants to go and her Dad interrupts her and Willow just shoots him right down. I love how much strength Willow has when she's fighting for the ones she loves. The chemistry between Allyson and Amber just feels so natural and beautiful. I love it. soooo.....on a personal note, I always get a bit teary-eyed in this episode but tonight a bit more so. It's a funny coincidence on the timing for this, but last night my boyfriend of six years and I signed a lease on a new home and will be moving in together in January. It will be the first time I've lived with someone else (yikes). I'm SUPER happy and excited, of course, but I also ripped off the bandage and called my parents after to tell them the news too. It was the first time we've acknowledged me being gay in twenty-six years. I guess me taking this step suggests it's not really a phase I'll grow out of. ;) We did have a surprisingly OK chat and mom even suggested they might want to meet Rob sometime. Baby steps....and there's not going to be big changes overnight, but it's a nice/weird feeling that the door might be opening up a bit there. Anyway - they're lovely and not at all like Tara's family; but still... this one tugged my heart a lot more this time. (just figured I'd share that) :) What a great season this is turning out to be. I'm glad you're enjoying it so far.

omg I laughed when D said that. perfect. LOL

I knew there was a reason I hated his Lucifer character.

Ed Green

The actor who plays Donny, Tara's sister, played the corrupt cop Chloe was investigating and shot in the first season of Lucifer.

The conflict with Spike is something to watch for. He doesn’t exactly always think with the brain on his shoulders if you know what I mean. He’s dealing with lust for someone he used to hate with a fiery passion and maybe it could be more than lust. Him not having a soul like Angel probably makes him incapable of knowing how to deal with those emotions. It can be very comical or very creepy and dangerous depending on the situation.

Buffy: "Tell me about it..." Dak: "...Stud" Okay, I can 100% picture Tony Head dressed as Danny Zuko and belting out, "I've got chills! They're multiplying." I can even pictured SMG in the tight leather getup.... 🤔😍🤗🙄 (Ahem) I'm back. What was I saying? Oh, yeah. But there's something disturbing picturing Giles and Buffy singing, "You're the one that I want," that I could live without....

Stargazer1682

This has to be the longest the show has gone to pay-off something foreshadowed in a previous episode. The first time through for me, I started watching regularly with the end of season 4/start of season 5, and so I caught this episode before catching up with a lot of the previous seasons. So I can't imagine how it must have been for others who saw it in order, and especially those watching it in real time to go practically a full season between Tara intentionally screwing up the spell to reveal demons, to finally having that explained with this episode; or by that point how many people must have forgotten about it.

It is so self-centered someone wouldn't give up their own personal life to cook, clean, serve, and care for grown and fully capable adults that are their own family just because they selfishly want to be happy😉. The audacity 🤣.

I love this episode. It's such a great twist, especially after they've dropped all the little hints about Tara along the way. And I think it has some wonderfully positive things to say about found families and getting past gaslighting and manipulation. And as you mentioned, we see more of Spike's continued character growth over this season here in this episode. Obviously, no spoilers, but his character arc in this season, and really over the whole of the series, is probably my favorite in the whole show.

Although Spike helps Tara out by hitting her, he didn't really need to, although none of the scoobies put it together. When Tara warned buffy that the demon was behind her, she could see and hear Tara proving that there was no demon to hide. Even if she was a human/demon hybrid Buffy wouldn't have been able to see or hear her, just as she couldn't see or hear spike when he killed the demon and said "you're welcome "

Graham Nickless

I've always had a soft spot for this one! It does get vastly overshadowed by the Goliath that comes next though.

m.,

Yay! I was on pins and needles waiting for your reaction to this one, Dak, and you delivered in spades. :D Tara's stutter actually came back a lot sooner. It was back in the magic shop as soon as she saw her brother. Which I always thought was a great touch. The discussion with her father about witchcraft was a clear metaphor for being LGBTQ+, but it was done so well. I've heard about conversations gay individuals have had with parents or family going exactly like that, including parents saying it's evil, the person who's coming out saying it doesn't feel evil, and said family members talking about how they thought they would get it out of thier system, it's a phase, or they'll get over it. So well done. The writers also did a beautiful job of making Tara's family feel creepily cult-like without being too on the nose about it. All the acting in this episode was fantastic, too. From the start, the brother just comes off as that dickhead you want to punch. Excited for the next one. God, I love season 5 so much.

Riley just wants buffy to open up and include him in her life as equals. They are supposed to be in a relationship. He said it last episode they should be there for each other instead of her trying to protect him all the time. She trusted Giles with the dawn info but she doesn't trust Riley enough. (Which he senses) this all goes back to that dream in restless. She still has her walls up around him. Isn't a big part of a relationship about supporting each other when you are stressing. How can he help if she doesn't open up.

This episode kinda brings up one of the unfortunate bits about LGBT+ representation in television at this point in time. I'm sure with this level of revelation with Buffy+Riley or Xander+Anya, we'd get at least a brief loving kiss in Tara+Willow's talk during the dance.

Nicholas Corgan

Such a cute episode. Loved your thoughts on this one, you totally *get* this show and I love your reactions ❤️ also the next episode is one of my favourites, I can't wait!

When did dakara say spikes gaining a soul? 🤔

x_Rhi_x

Another good episode. Its the first tara centric episode in a while but its done soo well. It explains stuff that Tara did in earlier episodes well and also gives a bit of a reason why the rest doesn't know much about her. Yes its partly because Buffy and Xander etc didnt take too much of a time to get to know her, but also because Tara has been hiding it a bit out of fear. Atleast thats how I see it. Spike's obsession is growing and although funny (as spike always is) but how far will it go. This villain that is yet unnamed is one of my favourite villains. I love her crazy aspect. Buffy not wanting to tell the others about dawn because she doesn't want to treat them differently makes sense, and i agree with most of your points about that. Though Buffy immediately goes into overprotective sister mode and raises a few eyebrows with that. I did spot a bit of Dakrya there, i agree that that scene was done really well. Tara's family are horrid and should rot :)

Bart Aansorgh

To make things very clear spike is NOT gaining a soul lol. From now on look at his actions very closely. Vampires can do good actions. That is not up for debate. We saw this in season 2 when he helped buffy against angel. He helped buffy so that he could escape with Dru. what you have to look at is the WHY. Spike helped with Tara not because he cares about Tara at all (he says this outright) but because he wanted to piss off her family who were trying to act superior to demons which spike is as well. He helped buffy because of his obsession with her not because he wanted to do good. It is still selfish even though it has good outcomes.

Christopher simeon

Do we know what you mean by "f*** the Slayer"? Well, yes. It's not a euphemism! 🙂 Did you recognise Sindy the vampire? That's the girl doppleganger Willow bit in the Bronze. Presumably she finished turning her when we weren't watching. Both Buffy and Angel (the show) have a poor opinion of fathers. As well as Buffy and Tara's in this episode both Angel and Wesley had/have difficult relationships. There's not many positive portrayals of fathers in either show. 'The beast' didn't say her name was mystical. Just that it was holy. Tut, Tut, the gang were apparently drinking alcohol in the Bronze though they don't turn 21 for another year. That's against the law! 😮 (Not that I care, I'm British.) We've got Tara's secret out of the way. Now we can relax.
