Ota Clinic Episode 64 | (Esoteric) Painting Basics

Going over crucial basic understanding of painting in a way I just never hear people explain. Music was a little loud, I'm getting used to this new mic set up.

Absolutely, we'll go over this a bunch, I've been thinking about it a lot lately. Surprisingly, you can push the painterly quality very far even on the face as long as you're working within certain conditions, so we'll explore all that. Because yeah, at the end of the day anime is in its lines, but within that framework, you have a shocking range of freedom.

I've been trying to figure out how to make anime as painterly as possible. I'm wondering, how can you make anime painterly? What I've noticed is that it seems like you can't make the face painterly at all, anime is almost defined by the 2D graphical line art in the faces. Anime faces are always have flat colors and no gradients besides the eyes. So I'd like if you can explain the boundaries between painting and anime. Like what are the rules of anime that painterly style break and which can you get away with. Also a video on painting specifically an anime body would be great. I've noticed artists are able to get away with making the anime bodies a little painterly, but still pretty simplified/flat, while the faces are 100% simple and flat.
