Weekday Update & C DOG Preview

So, hi guys. Been a minute. Been job hunting. Packing. Moving toward the coast. It’s been…so fun.

I don’t have any Lunar Phases updates, and outside of my personal life problems, there’s not much going on. I do have this, for you lovely Members though!

Enjoy, and apologies if I butchered any Spanish. Last time I used it was…let’s not get into that

"This is a bad idea, Diego." A little girl in a pink shirt and yellow shorts hissed at the slightly older boy in front of her. They were creeping into an unmarked rocky cave within the Grand Canyon Caverns. As the boy, Diego, kept swiveling his flashlight around, the little girl hugged her stuffed monkey close to her chest. "Tía told us not to go far."

"Ah, c'mon, Dora! Where's your sense of adventure?!" Diego asked, his voice a loud whisper, whirling around to shine his light in her face. He grinned at her. "Don't be afraid! If anything happens, I'm here and Boots is here!"

"..O-okay." The girl, Dora, said as she pulled her stuffed monkey close.

"That's the spirit!" He grinned as he turned back and took a step that had him kick a loose pebble. The small stone clacked along the ground and the sound echoed around the cave. The two children froze as the sound reverberated from the castle walls. They shared a look with one another, a beat of silence stretched between them once the sound stopped, before they both let their shoulders slump with relief as nothing immediately followed.

Then, the shrieks started. Soft and faint at first, the children screamed in terror as the origin grew closer due to the flap of their wings.

"Bats!" Diego cried as he whipped around again. He sprinted back the way he came, and snatched Dora's wrist as he did to pull her along. The surprise grab had caused her to drop her stuffed monkey. That had her cry out and resist the older boy. "What are you doing?! ¡Vamos, Dora! Let's go!"

"Wait, Diego! Boots is still back there!"

"We can come back for it later!" Diego refuted as she struggled in his grip. He pulled harder and took another blind step, to trip on a rock and pulled Dora down with him as he fell. His eyes burned and he cried out as he released his cousin's wrist. She, likewise, wailed, as she had also fallen and now both of them were engulfed by the darkness.

The flashlight had skittered away to the other side of the cave and the swarm of bats descended on them. The children cried as the little flying mammals' wings scratched their clothes and skin. A shrill whistle pierced the swarm's shrieks and the children's cries, bringing another tranquil silence to the dark cave.

A bright red light emerged behind the crying kids, and a low growl broke the silence. The children closed their eyes and screamed again, but the bats remained quiet and still.

"Begone." The demand was soft, but stern and sent the swarm back to the depths of the dark caverns. Another beat of silence came before warmth flooded through Dora and Diego, caused by a gentle embrace from their savior. They whimpered and kept their watery eyes shut. "Shh, shh, shh... Tranquilos niños, calm down. Tío Rey has you both. You're safe."

"Tío Rey?" Diego repeated, cracking his eyes open to find a tanned man with playful eyes that were so impossibly blue, they stood out despite the red light behind him. He had a friendly smile on his face and three thin lines under each of his blue eyes.

"Well, not your Tío Rey, but it's what most call me nowadays!" He chuckled, before he sobered. He pulled his arms back, releasing them from the encompassing warmth they provided, and kept a hand on each of the two's shoulders. A glacial stare replaced the playful gaze. "This cave is very dangerous, it's not safe to play in. What in the world are you two doing out here?"

"I...I wanted to keep exploring." Diego admitted, shrinking under the adult's gaze. "I didn't want to go home without an adventure. All we had was a tour and Papá said we'd have an adventure. He promised."

"Oh, I see." Rey hummed as his eyes returned to their playful state. Then, looked at Dora, his eyes twinkling. "¿Y tú, pequeña niña? You've been awfully quiet."

"Mi mamá dice que no hablemos con extraños," Dora muttered. She didn't shrink under his scrutiny and just sniffed the remnants of her tears away. Rather than be insulted, Rey let out a soft laugh and grinned at her.

"Tu mamá es una mujer muy sabia. But I can't help you get back to her if you don't talk to me a little, yeah?" he asked, and Dora gave a small nod. Rey beamed. "Yeah! So, why did you follow your cousin out here, hm?"

"Because Diego is brave...and I wanted an adventure, too!" She said before her lip warbled. "But now…now I just want Boots! I want to go home!"

"Boots?" Rey blinked and lifted his hand from her shoulder to rub his chin. His eyes went to the shoes on her feet. "Those hiking shoes don't look too bad off–"

"Um, Tío Rey? Boots is her monkey." Diego explained. Rey looked at him.

"A monkey?" He frowned as he looked down one end of the cave. "I didn't see a monkey…Hm, I must've missed him. He must be really slippery. Does he like to eat bananas?"

"Mm-hm!" Dora nodded as her lip warbled and her tears threatened to spill over again. "Él es mi amigo! My bestest friend!"

"Ohh! Well, we'd better find him before we leave, then!" Rey smiled at her before he stood all the way up and grabbed the glowing red stick he'd been kneeling with them in front of. He pointed it around and then grinned. "Aha, I see him. Stay put, niños, Tío Rey will be right back!"

He took a few steps and then stopped. A visible shiver wracked over his form before he shook it off and froze. Before either Dora or Diego could ask, an elated whoop left Rey's lips. He threw his head back and his arms up, the glowing red stick exploded into bright light. Blinded by the sudden illumination, the two adventuring children blinked and found themselves outside the National Park's Visitor Center.

Dora had Boots back in her arms and Diego had his flashlight in his hand. Any scrapes or bumps they might've had were healed up and their clothes were clean and pristine. Both were surprised and stunned so much by the sudden relocation that when they spotted 'Tío Rey', it didn't cross their minds to be alarmed as he sprinted toward the horizon fast enough to kick a whirlwind up in his wake.
