what was the book on Muhammad called?

Wyatt

Give audiobooks a try, you can find most for free if you look hard enough. I have a hard time reading too, but can tear through 2 or 3 audiobooks a week.

Benjamin Behrman

💯💯💯🧠🧠🧠

Cody Woodyard

Definitely worth a read for anyone that wants to nuance their understanding of theism acros multiple religious traditions. The dialectical plane that evangelicals and new atheists are stuck debating on is so mind numbingly stupid. DBH is a great way to transcend that discussion as if God was just another "thing" in the universe. Also once you have some philosophical framework for a different understanding a mystical experience either with or without the assistance of substances can help solidify thinking differently.

When did it become ok to joke about Tuberculosis when it's still a pandemic and cause of death for a lot of folks in the Global South, and it's making a come back in the US in both Kansas and Michigan?

johland

You wanna talk about a Visigothic name, Alaric is about as Visigoth as it gets. Dad had no idea about that, just saw it in a baby name book and thought it was cool. Blew the mind of just about everyone in my medieval history grad program when I got there. King of the Nerds.

Alaric

...though it was sorta funny when it was undercut by the first part of the episode, where the democratic party apparently is pretty set on "posting themselves out of this mess" by being more aggressive in their online response (as a way to combat Trump or whatever). They're perfectly ill-suited for this. I forsee exactly zero rising to the occasion (among the top). There's going to be so many black-sassy-woman-gifs being posted on main.

Jesper Ohlsson

Commenting here because I can’t on the Apple Podcasts feed but Tom’s comments on episode 378, starting at about 1 hour 6 mins in resonated so strongly with me. Thanks Trillbillies. Really means a lot to me.

Dude of H-town

Guys, Tarence didn't have tuberculosis. His corset was just too tight, and he had to steady himself with one hand, while placing the other on his forehead, palm out and - involuntarily, mind you - utter "oh my stars!" as air was pressed over his vocal chords. Thankfully, there was a knee-high daybed in his vicinity, which provided ever so much cushioning, and much elation. Now stop all this foolish, hurtful rumormongering. It really is quite childish.

Jesper Ohlsson

I love Alex she's so funny. Great ep. I haven't read much Walker Percy but i once read his essay Loss of the Creature. It was a good read but I hated it because he has such a depressing outlook. I think about it often because whenever I feel self conscious about my own enjoyment of things I have to remember that I reject him and his thoughts

CDC datasets are coming down now. I'm going to meetings (even zoom calls) and NIH colleagues are gone they can’t email or talk. I totally agree that I’m an atheist but I’m afraid to speak about something I’m afraid of. But I also think a thought or a word is real and God (to me) is not. Real things might have ripple effects. I’m stressed about the strong “shoot the messenger” energy. I’m also stressed that the LA wildfires and the military flying into a plane have been immediately blamed on women working. But I kinda also suspect that not saying what I’m afraid of isn’t some kind of fool proof plan.

BookMisser

My 19 month old nephew. Doug.

The great Marxist mystic Simone Weil changed the whole way I think of questions like that; her ideas of attention vs will can be distilled into asking “why do I read” instead of “how do I read”. I also got rid of my Wi-Fi lol, so that helps

Adam R

You guys have such great banter with Alex. Really enjoyable episode. It’s like the first time I’ve laughed in a week.

Emily L

Y’all need to get Tanya back on for a guest spot. I was listening to old episodes and it was so fucking funny. Great chemistry between you guys. The episode when you talked about Mayor Pete and wearing zoot suits killed me man, Terrance saying “There come them Trillbillies!” Episode 225 on the free feed if anybody wants to go back.

Cory Waring

I feel silly asking this question. It’s for everyone in the chat: How do you all read? Lmao. Like what I mean is, how do you find the time and self-discipline to sit down, read books, essays, open browser tabs, etc. The amount of stuff out there to keep up with is overwhelming. One of the best parts about this pod is you guys distill and contextualize various texts in ways that are really helpful.

Mike

The only good Dougie, is a Dougie Jones, Dougie. Peep this Dougie Jones tee https://www.etsy.com/listing/1242750328/?ref=share_ios_native_control

The Hollywood Hater

I'm currently reading through Gravity's Rainbow again so the Pynchon talk was some spooky fun synchronicity. He'd be an incredible get for the pod.

Rangifer Tarandus

Interesting, that teacher did recommend Slaughthouse 5 to me, so that lines up

Warbs

This idea is explored in Vonnegut’s Mother Night. Kurt seems to agree with your teacher.

Sammy

friends, can someone help me find when the boys call the cheezit a new york queen? i could have sworn i just heard it but i can't find it!

ohiocorn

my condolences to the Dougs that got blindsided by shade in this episode. they should really rub that hat down with some fritos so it's got that 🌽 🌽 🌽 smell

ha ha let's get real I can name at least 150 episodes where Tarence has something wrong with him~~~

pipistrello65

this episode is an all-timer for sure!! can we have more alex???

Jacob Nathan

My HS history teacher claimed Hitler was in heaven... because he was insane.

Warbs

This was one of the funnest episodes in a really long time. I demand you all host Alex semi-frequently.

Jordan Hunnicutt

I once broke up with a “Wally” for obvious reasons

SF

Tarence-since you're into Keats consider checking out the Hyperion Cantos series of books by Dan Simmons-lots of wild scifi stuff and much of it revolves around Keats and his work, super cool

E

Sounded to me like she didn't like him because he was close friends with an abuser since she clearly stated that was why they didn't like him. Not to mention, most people have guys they hated in high school enough that they still think "God, I hated that guy" when they are reminded of them but also many years out can recognize the reasons seem less notable many years removed in adulthood.

BK

Great episode but sucks to the hear the Malcolm hate. It’d be one thing if he was an asshole or something but sounds like she was hating on him for not growing up poor.

Julian Berman

damn this episode made me laugh all the way out loud.the visceral jewish need to be superstitious and get out of germany, BB name game recognition, alex’s relationship with her dad. thanks ❤️

hhannahh

Tarence Bae—TB. Coincidence? I think not.

Richard Cochnar

Has Tarence read The Magic Mountain? I'd like to hear what he thinks. Especially re the medical treatment.

Amy

Indiana too

Tarence is responsible the largest TB outbreak in US history https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jan/28/kansas-tuberculosis-outbreak

Brakiachi

I saw the same TikTok lol, That kid in the Coal Miner Influencer video looks a bit like Cooper Norris in “Landman” ⛏️

Sam Ward

He aprendido español para escapar de Texas a México 🙃 Cough is "tos" Lungs are "pulmones" "Tengo tos" = I have a cough I like the spanish words for cold, personally, for the sickness es "un resfriado" vs. "el frío" for the temperature. They just sound so right idk if that makes sense.

Austin

Good to have some lady energy on the pod again. Makes me miss Tanya. Hope she’s doing well.

Richard Cochnar

Great guest!

Noah McClellan

Reckless and sensual are the two words to describe old country buffet for sure. Heat lamp meat and 10 hr old mash potatoes are served at Mar-A-Largo as well as TB hotspots in Northwest Indiana. Oy Vey, what a country

Michael Wadman

“TB was thought to come from too much passion, afflicting the reckless and sensual” that’s a Sontag quote about how it was the old heroin chic. old country buffet 🔥🧖‍♀️

BookMisser

I think it can be easy to understate the impact of the deep seek release; due to the fragility of the FIRE sector and how most US growth is based on precarious tech bubbles it could cause some dominoes to fall. Government will probably step in, but this meth addict country can’t take much more stimulus

William

Personal TB story here. Worked at an Applebee's in my early 20's that was next door to an Old Country Buffet where a TB outbreak occurred. It closed one day and found out TB was the reason. They were both located in a run down dirt mall. Perfect personification of merica.

Michael Wadman

I respect the meningitis sure. But y’know what I respect even more? The womeningitis. It’s 2025 guys. Let’s be better than this.

Chapo has always branded nu metal as right wing

I was thinking more Slacker than anything really. That style of "characters aimlessly walking around and telling littles stories, and it can go either way if it's about anything or just self-indulgent" became a short-lived trend in 90's indie movies (the "hangout" movies).

Jesper Ohlsson

Basically EoG defines the word “God,” utilizing the Vedic tradition, Christianity and Sufi Islam primarily… completely blew my mind the first time I read it

Cody Woodyard

Tom and Tarence need to read some David Bentley Hart haha Experience of God helped me see the typical new atheist v theist (like William lane Craig and those dummies) debates as completely missing the point by both operating under a Cartesian definition of “god” that none of the religious traditions really meant by that word

Cody Woodyard

Bro I won’t be able to enjoy Before Sunrise again 😂

Cody Woodyard

I just came on to post this!

Jesscon

Tarance, you get sick frequently, lol. We can go to the tapes on this one

William

Trillbilly Worker's Party

Maybe I wasnnt getting exposed to Bolshevism then lol makes more sense

Trillbilly Worker's Party

The Dougphobia on display is truly sickening

The world is descending into chaos; but you gotta protect yourself from letting all that news take advantage of your human ability to be empathetic. I wrote more, but it sounded preachy; hearing about ice raids in Chicago really made me spiral and I guess I’m saying I feel ya. I feel helpless, angry, etc… but I still have to live and so do you

William

Bonn was the capital of west Germany, its best köln

Mae Berens

Alex is the perfect guest holy shit!

AL

Trump narrates things like a 90's Linklater character. Lots of intensity and blow-by-blow excessive detailing and repetition that ends in a "anyway" dead-end where you're unsure how much of the story is allusion to something else or just genuinely completely pointless.

Jesper Ohlsson

Republican is a great thing to be in like everywhere but the United states. We should have Labor Republicans The thing about their initials being in order had a lot more impact when there were three of them Nominative determinism- I know a trans man whose deadname was "a man, duh"

Andrew Dunn

Dude im self employed. So…maybe?

Louis Wilkins

I feel you man. I’m honestly just telling myself daily to hold on until enough other people have nothing to lose that we’ll have the numbers to Do Something. Probably never going to happen bc the whole world is just Axis now, idk who is going to sacrifice millions of people to fight the nazis this time… but the rubber room is gonna be fucking lit and hopefully our deaths will be quick. Maybe you’ll be able to kill your boss in all the chaos when things fall apart in a year or two.

Chapo has always branded nu metal as right wing

I sent an edible arrangement when I thought you had the consumption and weren't long for this world. I hope those melon balls and are kiwi flowers are already spoilt when they arrive.

Andrew Ratcliffe

It’s the Coal Mining ASMR to Black Lung ASMR pipeline.

Leyland

Im working too hard and the world appears to be descending into chaos. I’ll get over it.

Louis Wilkins

Aw yay what a lovely episode!! Hope you’re all doing well. Tarence if you and Alex started an email newsletter for your writings I’d absolutely subscribe
