Here’s two real stories for you: the Soviet Union and Cuba. Anarchism has always been dead on arrival and hasn’t actually achieved anything except spectacle.

Browning Becherer

Wrong episode but I need to note that I have been saying “I wouldn’t eat that pussy with Nosferatu’s tongue” in bobby dylan voice for almost a week now and I’m very grateful

Matt

This is true in my experience organizing. The psl types have these generalized ideas of anarchism but don't actually know what they're talking about while most of the anarchists I know have a far better grasp on Marxism compared to the others grasp on anarchism.

bearoftr

"Marxist tell better stories than anarchists" is such a brain dead, ahistorical take. Anarchists have been trying to tell stories, in both theory, histories & science fiction, for over a century (see Let Guin, Graeber, Bookchin, Kropotkin, etc). Here's an actually real life anarchist story for you: the Haymarket Affair. One of those stories where there are bombs, a show trial, a scared ruling class and subsequently huge gains made by the labor movement at the time. It might be a story without Luigi's perfectly shaped brows, but it had more political ramifications in America than any other event at the time.

ASL

Second on this

That's Good Broth

Looking for an old episode where they talk about the Homer Hickam twitter incidient

Paul Fortuin

Everybody talks about Dylan going electric, but the more consequential move was when he went stochastic (fuck the haters more bob dylan pls)

Corey Rogerson

Tarence, what do you make of The Brutalist trailer?

Matt Barlow

Alright boys, I gotta throw down the gauntlet on this one. At the risk of outing myself, I’m an archaeologist (PhD candidate) and an anarchist. I disagree that anarchists don’t have stories to tell, histories and futures alike. I say this because I have many colleagues who are anarchist archaeologists who work with folks across the world to tell these stories. Some of us even put together some “counter myths” a couple years back to fight the prevailing stories we tell about the past, because we agree with y’all that we need new compelling stories and futures to look forward to and work toward. You can find it open access here: https://doi.org/10.1111/aman.13940 Some of my friends also put together another article about how we need to look for archaeological evidence of equality, not just inequality (also open access): https://doi.org/10.1017/s0959774323000483 So I reject the idea that we have nothing to say, y’all should take a look at some of this work if you want something to think on. I’m happy to discuss this stuff more, I’d just be glad that more folks are engaging with it. I think it’s compelling, and far from Aaron’s categorization of anarchist history as a choose your own adventure (although those books are sick and it would be fun to make one of those). Honestly much of the history of archaeology and history *has* been a choose your own adventure, it’s just that it’s been the straight white male colonialists who have been choosing which adventures and histories matter, but of course y’all know that. I’m a longtime fan of the show too of course. I loved this episode, I love the discussions y’all have when all three of you are on and I am one of those weird listeners that also loves when it’s just Tom and Terence doing bits like the Race Hustler. (While I’m out here making demands, we need an update on the Bogus Beggar, that story is an all timer for me.) Anyway I’m sticking around, keep doing your thing, but if you’re interested in more discussions of anarchism and Marxism in archaeology I’m happy to talk with y’all more, shoot me a DM if you like. Be well, take care of yourselves, and I’ll be listening in 2025.

Fingers crossed for a future crossover between Bob Dylan and leaned-out Antichrist Black Vitamin Santa

"my two adult sons stayed the weekend. They're down in the basement smashing bulbs on the floor and making christian rap. I'm not going down there again." "George. George! Go down there and tell them everyone can hear!"

Baby Jesus was the original vending machine.

Jesper Ohlsson

It seems pretty clear to me from how the administration ran the last two years, alongside the fact that there is no longer any economic program in their platform, and the willingness of both the apparatchiks and the base to abandon socially progressivise policy both during the campaign and in the post mortem, that the Democrats are signalling they will be trying to outflank the GOP to the right in the near future elections. They've perfectly positioned themselves to identify as both the war and border security party. A neoconservative party to combat MAGA. Left and even center liberals will find themselves politically homeless alongside the Left.

Nick L

This ep was so fucking good.

Jordan Hunnicutt

Like lots of workers, at the same time I work full time—researching tumor genomes—so I don’t own/create all of the inputs to my “work” but you know it is a long and variably compelling day. I’m fine with helping fellas disconnect their since of self with soul-crushing employment chit chat (by this I mean the lame “what do you do?” questions) . But I don’t hear much realistic push to say “shit that person works from 6:30 to 10:00 and then cleans and intermittently rests for the 6:30 wake up. I mean shift the details and that describes lots of employed caregivers. I worry that we spend all our time thinking how to reach men shocked by the shortcomings of the employment landscape and that to calm them we affirm the “women’s work” is lesser or a humiliation. Sorry if this is incoherent. My baby made two sweet clones and I live and work under this chaos.

"fallen man mode of production" goes so hard

futureyeet

Not to be a pedant but the reason Biden didn't pardon Marcellus Williams is bc Williams was convicted of a state-level offense; the president can only pardon or commute federal sentences. I still think he could've used more leverage than he did (none), but that's at least the "official" reason why. Lovely ep as always gentlemen.

Will Griffin

her books are so cool.

Billiam

I mean I own my own means of production but that is kinda like owning machine to make me need more and more from society while I can “work” less and less.

BookMisser

“Women working in fast-food kitchens or drawing blood did not hold the same narrative weight in the American political imagination as men chipping coal from the earth.” So how does communism or any capitalist alternative deal with childcare, elder care, food service and the enormous unpaid/lowpaid but essential workforce? There’s so much easy discussion of “women’s work” as humiliating or unskilled… mostly don’t read fiction so I’m seriously curious.

BookMisser

wasn't Biden's brother involved in these type of scams? just a grifter family

cinchal

The comment about southern workers being unwitting scabs was interesting. I remember jokes from old farmers about farming until is was all gone as the answer to “what would you do if you won the lottery”. But even if people understand the unfairness of the system, the south has deeply weird attitudes after hundreds of years of legal slavery (as far as I’ve seen) . I remember people feeling that unions were kinda like ungrateful to the employers offer of employment. Only anecdotal but I found the previous slavers and the poor-farming sides of my family super weird when they tried to describe our economic relationships to each other. Funny but someone mentioned 50 shades of grey as something all women read all the time. I haven’t read it but my impression is that the romanticized subjugation is kinda like what both sides of my family did. The truth seemed to me to be a supremely unsexy even loathsome, lazy, endlessly greedy system grinding away at as many people as it could.

BookMisser

Google his name and the nation. It is a good read so far. Not surprised that some people commented before finishing it bc it covers pretty vexing periods in history. I read “ This led heartlanders to vote against their own interests, which in turn had destroyed their communities. “All they have to show for their Republican loyalty,” Frank wrote, “are lower wages, more dangerous jobs, dirtier air, [and] a new overlord class.”” And was like wait… was Gore offering more? I googled gore’s campaign and almost passed out reading the lame truth again. For the love of god. Market based mechanisms funded by a government trust to address climate change; a “lock box” for Medicare that could be pilfered for the national debt; and austerity to fund the boomers retirement.

BookMisser

fantastic episode. frankly every ep with all 3 trill boys is a banger.

Karl Childers

tom do you hate eric adams or fetterman more?

FamilyGorgeous

Dude, it’s not that serious; I was just giving them some shit for how they worded their response. I could care less for labels because they’re all essentially meaningless for all the actual good they do, defining yourself as part of any “group”.

William

I randomly carried a box of books for Elaine Pagels on campus once. Super nice lady— had a nice chat about religion in Cold War era East Africa and how I probably wasn’t interrogating it enough in my senior thesis at the time.

Ryan Chavez

Unnecessarily antagonistic response; right now all leftists (who are doing stuff) are essentially at the same level, doing the same stuff. There's no power to have a power struggle over. Maoists vs anarchists is mutual aid with a red hankie vs mutual aid with a black hankie. It's not like communists in the US have gained power while anarchists are floundering The Trillbillies are cool because they are MLs and/or Maoists and/or anarchists, but they don't dwell on the labels because labels don't prevent prisons or clean up water tables

Andrew Dunn

So what I’m hearing is that communists read Marx first, then try anarchism, and realize they don’t need it, while anarchists are closeted marxists?

William

King Vitamin was the bomb!!

Jennifer

I think uncle Rerun deserves a cut of the patreon from all the content he’s provided

Only a black swan cataclysm is capable of defeating capitalism and the right wing. Posada was right.

Aaron mentions Ursula K Leguin later in the episode. (Not that you were necessarily talking about fiction narratives when you said "story")

On that Saudi note, I left my pretty cushy job as a carpenter for a certain pretentious French Canadian circus company over the companies decision to participate in Muhammad bin salmans propaganda campaign to bring western entertainment, couldn’t bring myself to be given slaves instead of local stagehands to put up my dumb sets to cover for the worst people on the fucking planet

Mae Berens

I can’t find Terrance’s article. Can you put it in the show notes please?

Marty Shambles

Far as I know he was the beneficiary of a pardon of a class of non violent felons who were put on home detention during covid. Real scandal is that he was already working the system to his maximal advantage. Corrupt judges should burn in hell.

I wasn't raised to believe that Santa existed, because, as my mom later told me in my late teens "if you learned we lied about Santa Claus, what were you going to think about God?" Good question, mom. I like how Tom tries to make the point about government jobs having whimsical duties, and uses internet gambling as his example, and then Aaron immediately follows it up with pardoning a turkey, a much better example. (Extra funny because I recently listened to the Gambling Guys episode of Guys where a certain Trillbilly gets sweated by the Secret Service) Yeah, they weren't called oompa loompas because oompa loompa was a funny magic word for a race of mythical creatures, they were called oompa loompas because it's a stereotypical Papua New Guinea style tribal name like "unga bunga tribe". And it wasn't changed when the book was published, in the original book, they are just happy African slaves that work for food and lodging.

Andrew Dunn

Democrats are raspberry Airheads. Even the mystery white is a better pick because it has a good chance of not being raspberry.

Luke T

We were all originally intended to be a black child I think.

Louis Wilkins

The only anarchists I knew were the best cooks I've ever met. I'm sure no one was offended by your comment.

auf die Welle

Probably sounds harsh I apologize in advance of anyone reading this. Love the show, have a good rest of the year

Harper

Communists love to read 0 or maybe 1 anarchist book then say anarchism has no story. I'd be disappointed if I hadn't heard the same shit 100 times before. You just don't know the stories. Anyway more Marxists should read more anarchist literature. God knows Anarchists are reading Marxist literature

Harper

I know it's probably obvious, but this episode really clarified to me why the democrats--and worldwide liberalism--seems to be failing so fucking hard. Liberals represent the status quo, which is only good for a handful of people, and the majority of the people hate the status quo. They lost to Donald Trump twice! He's the literal embodiment of the thing that most people hate but he at least pretends to be aggrieved by the status quo, which makes him more relatable than the fucking dems. God, I hate them so much.

If my girl wasn’t horny for Luigi I would be heavily concerned

Jackman Ochs

Well, obviously Santa is an anagram of Satan. It’s right there in the name

Uso Dayo

Tarrance’s comment at the end regarding Saudi Arabia is spot on. Material conditions will lead to caste system in the US. It’s easier to explicitly forbid social mobility than provide socialism. Also, in the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie himself was originally intended to be a black child

Uso Dayo

If you don't have any core beliefs - ones you can say in public, anyway - it becomes very difficult to "not do unforced errors". If your center of gravity is completely emulated, "the line" you shouldn't cross is similarly synthetic. It becomes a constant intellectual calculation instead of the immediate sense in your gut you get when things are straying way off course of "what you want". Not to be twitter-reductive, but it really is that drill-tweet of nervously gauging the audience how the dial should be moved, instead of "just knowing", and leading by that conviction. Anyway, that's not this party's deal. They absolutely have core beliefs, and those can be found in how they actually work and what they fight against when challenged (usually from inside their own group). Try to implement national healthcare and tamp down on "essentially insider-trading as a congress-person" and you see them roar into action. What they say they "are for" is completely immaterial. I suspect a big reason why people are so fed up with democrats whole thing is that - on top of not actually wanting to do anything good - they also waste your time going "ooooh, ooooh, aaaaah, we really want to but we couldn't, ooooh I knoooow, everything is so terrible!". They arrive to roughly the same conclusion policy-wise as republicans, but the republican party is a lot more upfront and direct about what "they want to do". It's the condescension of a fake-hug vs a look of open disdain. One of these takes a lot more time to decode, and that's very annoying if the underlying animosity is roughly the same anyway.

Jesper Ohlsson

I got bingo on my Aaron card- 5 across; “Calcified” “Necrotic” Free space “Not to cut you off, Tarence” “Floating in the ether”

William

If the Demonrats can recover from the Mondale Reagan election then they will recover from this. Sadly.

Andrew Ratcliffe

We love our Aaron don’t we folks?

Chapo has always branded nu metal as right wing

Hell yeah, Aaron is back. Been missing hearing him.

Richard Cochnar

The degree to which the Dems are just the party of unforced errors overall is genuinely baffling. Historically I’ve been against the “they’re trying to lose” train. But there are times where the number of own-goals is so overwhelming that it becomes difficult to fathom how it could possibly be unintentional lol. But then I hear shit like the post-loss Pod Saves interview and go “oh okay no they are actually just completely deranged” Also yeah I have no faith that Biden had any idea who was on that list or was even cognizant of what he was signing.

Cthulhusbedandbreakfast

It's very on-brand, but it's also so "...why? And why this cunt?". It's like they picked his name from The Fishbowl Of Unforced Errors. Or maybe some intern stole his pardon-stamper and it's way too much work to explain to Biden what happened so they just said he did it and it was very important to him or whatever.

Jesper Ohlsson

During the upcoming reign of drip king vitaman his praetorian guard will all wear those.

Cthulhusbedandbreakfast

Considering he’s been on the wrong side of history for literally his entire career, I think it’s actually supremely on brand for him. I’d be far more shocked if he only pardoned people who deserve it lol

Cthulhusbedandbreakfast

Thanks, Pal!

Trillbilly Worker's Party

Things sound pretty dire if they think the path back to power hinges on really nailing down which animal most reminds people of the party. It also sounds like the kind of activity you do to pass the time in a hospice day-room. Like, things are mostly on fire and they're busy being enthralled by one of those toddler-books that have different textures on the pages. "Oooh, this one's just like a cat!".

Jesper Ohlsson

Maybe the real alien tech is looking blurry

BookMisser

It's King VitaMAN not vitamin,

Sara

Biden really ground some dogshit into the carpet on his way out by helping a judge who did the type of crime absolutely nobody would be sympathetic towards. He's a baffling person.

Jesper Ohlsson

King Vitamin used to have masks you could cut out and wear as a kid and I was obsessed with that shit, good deep cut guys.

Kunopis

Aliens are on a strict "4k, plunked-down-camera or it didn't happen". It's pretty crazy how things have changed since the 90's when it would be mind-blowing news that any credible government would touch it at all, and now it just triggers this exasperated feeling that they're trying to sneak another rapist on to the Supreme Court while nobody is looking by being annoying with some ufo-bullshit.

Jesper Ohlsson

I asked god to save me and said Tom sent me. Didn’t know it would be that easy but you got one in the bank sir.

Thomb Thumb

"It's that time of year when we track Santa! Haha, just kidding; we mostly do entrapment and kill whistleblowers. But we like to have fun too. Not too much though! You'd be surprised how quickly things can become of national interest." //Also, "tidbit" is a very kind way of describing what megan kelly "had" on black santa. "Genuinely embarassing public freakout seldom seen by an adult in a professional setting, and on camera no less" is a lot more accurate. She was so earnest in her reaction too. Like she was a legit moron, and not just in this for the kayfabe.

Jesper Ohlsson

I for one welcome our new King and his thousand year reign of balanced breakfasts.

Cthulhusbedandbreakfast

I’m the guy who has to track Santa the rest of the year; I don’t even get to have my moment in the sun on the big day

William

I’m so disappointed by the alien reveal. So the dubious aliens you’ve been hyping happen to fly just like the drones that have recently become ubiquitous or the planes we know? It feels like you aren’t even trying to give me a distracting spectacle.

BookMisser

It took a crazy-long time for me to realize that "e-crisis" does not, in fact, refer to a phenomenon the way a bunch of stuff got an "e"-prefix when the internet became a thing. Like, ebook or whatever. By crazy-long time I mean I googled it *maybe* this year. After ambiently hearing it used for at least 8 years. When I finally got around to it it cleared up a lot of confusion I've had with this podcast frequently saying things like "...and of course, the whole e-crisis", and I'm like "yes... we ARE on the internet too much. I think."

Jesper Ohlsson

You beautiful boys have a beautiful holiday.

AL

I’d just like to say that I choked out a laugh at the gym on the non-premium episode where Tarence sheepishly dropped an e-crisis callback. Ya’ll should include regular eps in the feed so us hogs can snurfle about in the comments.
