Premium 296: Probably Apocryphal

This week we're sampling from a few different articles to get a sense of what's going on with the conservatives today: their psycho-sexual anxieties, religious fears, demographic trends, and sense of humor. All of this of course leads back to a general outline of why the Democrats aren't doing much better.

Good stuff!

Joshua Cool

Always a joy to hear the boys laughing this much.

Gorrozolla aka AntiLinguist

In talking about the complainer stuff, Trump does it in almost the same way as Rodney Dangerfield. He brings you in on the joke then by the end dismisses it because you and he both know that he will come out ok *wink wink*

Bschiltz3

i'm all-in on one of his high-rises collapsing with him in it

one piece of the puzzle here might be that sydney sweeney was a ~victim of cancel culture~ because of those photos at a birthday party her MAGA family. i’m not sure if that made it onto the radar of the conservative commentators though

Finally committed to Patreon after that one episode where Tom asked for anyone who would based on some weird ass phrase. I’ve been listening for years but, I just got this Pavlovian response. Absolve me of my free rider grift ty lol

My HS history teacher said the he believed Hitler was likely not in Hell because he was insane. Public school before anyone asks.

How was it?

1. here in louisville we’ve got a whole megachurch of the “drink beer, swear a lot, be really into menswear and edgy design” guys but their views on women remain archaic. it’s a dark, hip place 2. obviously elections have always operated as a capitalistic mechanism in practice, but that used to be behind the scenes. with shit like secret pop-ups and only communicating through demanding money, politicians have turned it around on us. like it used to be that they pretended they were listening to what we wanted in order to gain votes, but that facade is gone. now they’re like “no, this is what i’m selling, take it or leave it.” 3. also yeah i feel like if there’s less than a certain % of voter turnout, both parties should have to run different candidates for another election, but that would probably lead to more voter suppression, so

Is there a march madness pool this year?

Would you bozos please add a higher Patreon subscription and call it the Dylan Presidential Suite. But seriously. Do it.

Silverfish do predate on other bugs in the house similar to house centipedes if I'm not mistaken? That being said they do freak me out

Can't believe they didn't mention Huey Long in the humor article, fascinating figure in American history

The Bogus Beggar!!

Trillbilly Worker's Party

One of the people quoted in the article on Trump and humor, Alexander Reid Ross, is the author of Against the Fascist Creep and has been tracking the far right for several years now. Pointing this out because I think his quote was taken as a “all humor is bad” but I don’t think that’s his take; he’s definitely not a conservative or a lib

Beckett

my journeyman had freinds that grew weed back in the day and he showed them how to steal electricity during the day and run grow lights while they were out for the day and then plug the meter back in after so the power company or the cops never had any red flags go off

every man a kong

Terrance saw him outside a hotel? The flagrant vagrant or some shit like that.

dick titball

speaking of good scams, who was that guy who they made an ep about. “The lying” something.

There would never be a need to formally drop LGBTQ+ for the same reason there's no reason to formally drop "the black vote". The poverty of choice in a two-party system divvies up areas of concern in both an implied and explicit way, but since there's no credible challenge to how those things actually get handled outside of the dynamic between the two parties, they can just hang around with the unstated threat of "well, where else are you going to go? Over there?". If you have a de facto monopoly on something like LGBTQ+ issues - or non-white people's concerns -, then there's really no incentive to do much with it. You "have it", and get the full value of it as a signifier regardless whether you work tirelessly on it, or put in exactly 0% attention and work. The only credible challenge to that would be a third grouping - a party or movement - which has an increasingly harder fight the longer the two parties stay in power, and can amass means to stop something like that from taking off. Two-party systems are really, really bad. They monopolize big swathes and areas of concern, have little incentive to work effectively for those concerns as long as their stances are understood as being in opposition to the other party, and fairly quickly build up an enormous amount of defensive capability to any new challenger ever getting to their level of power, money and agency.

Love this episode. Trump is engaged with society enough to be a real hater. Libs are not engaged with the world, so they can't find it funny.

in Australia we have mandatory voting (under pain of $50 fine) and most elections still turn out majorities for the right wing.

Fingerless

I'm at 1:06:00, y'all need to go over the fact that Sydney Sweeney is literally doing a Catholic / nun horror movie called Immaculate

This has reminded me of shoplifting the Rhonda Shear issue of playboy at Freehold Raceway Mall in 1993. My fear of my friends parents having to deal with me getting caught was outweighed by my desire for the USA Up All Night lady.

Like, the workers are mad because of material conditions, but a figure like Trump allows them to sublimate these feelings of anger through a transgressive pleasure aka jouissance

Isaac Taylor

Deep red state, deep blue city. Only yard sign I’ve seen so far has been for RFK Jr. plenty of signs for local races. this election is going to be so fucking funny.

Richard Cochnar

The GOP is perverted in the godly way, just like you.

Isaac Taylor

I know Zizek’s star has fallen, but when he talks about Lacan’s obscene supplement, this is exactly the spice that energizes all sorts of Trump supporters

Isaac Taylor

The sinful workers party 😏

Isaac Taylor

I think conservatives want at least 1 person in their life that they can feel superior to, instead of facing the fact that most of them are useless to society. Does the woke HR lady bother you because she’s woke or because she’s a woman and you think she’s talking “down” to you

William

Aaron minting a new banger, “drink too much of their own supply” I miss these and Tarence’s mixed metaphors

Tarence have you read that "Stop Me Before I Vote Again"? It calls what you're talking about the ratchet effect. "The American political system, since at least 1968, has been operating like a ratchet, and both parties -- Republicans and Democrats -- play crucial, mutually reinforcing roles in its operation. The electoral ratchet permits movement only in the rightward direction. The Republican role is fairly clear; the Republicans apply the torque that rotates the thing rightward. The Democrats' role is a little less obvious. The Democrats are the pawl. They don't resist the rightward movement -- they let it happen -- but whenever the rightward force slackens momentarily, for whatever reason, the Democrats click into place and keep the machine from rotating back to the left." ... "Over time, the Democratic Party has assumed the role of ensuring that the countervailing pressure from the Left doesn't happen. The party contains and neutralizes the Left, or what there is of it. Left voters are supposed to support the Democrat, come what may -- and it's amazing how many of us have internalized this supposed obligation -- but they are not allowed to have any influence on the party's policies, either during the campaign or during the Republicans' infrequent holidays in opposition."

Some Guy

This has nothing to do with the episode but I thought you boys should hear it: one of the lawyers who brought about the Roe V. Wade case lives in my hometown. Her house now has an Israeli flag and a trump USA sign in the front yard.

Carter Mize

"I don't want these arbitrary signifiers of sexuality, I want these arbitrary signifiers of sexuality."

..the way the article is written makes it sound like Vance is doing hormone replacement therapy, or is possibly FTM.
