I am giving a presentation of this case IN PERSON tomorrow at Avila University in Kansas City. That's why I went ahead and made this. :)

2025-01-24 21:22:04 +0000 UTCTo be honest, I mostly agree with this case. Public parks and spaces in general cannot be allowed to become tent villages, especially in areas with little green space. Obviously I know this sounds heartless, but the long term solution is to add housing and social services (such as mental health services), and the short term solution is to build more shelters. New York, though it's far from a perfect system, does this much better than the west coast. It's unfortunate that certain states, such as New York, will fund their homeless services, while other states don't and actively mock the states that try to help!

I think often we don't like to see homeless camps because it forces reality back into our faces. Whether we realize it or not, many of us think we are better than those without stable and safe housing and we need to get over that.

2025-01-22 12:35:34 +0000 UTCI can’t say I would be thrilled with having a homeless encampment outside my business or residence. However, I also recognize that while it may be a nuisance, these are also people and they need to be treated humanely first and foremost. Forcing the homeless to move from point A to B does nothing to help the situation and basically treats them like cattle. The housing crisis, drug addiction and mental illness all contribute to the homeless problem. The one thing all homeless people have in common: a lack of support be it financial or personal. Investing more in social workers, shelters, affordable housing and drug treatment facilities would go a long way in helping this problem. While I do think local governments and nonprofits are the best equipped to address this issue; I also think the federal government should help supplement the cost of these things due to local governments usually being underfunded.
